42 THE DAILY TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, JULY 2, 1990 GOLF DIARY Michael Williams Open to be given Royal approval PRINCESS ANNE's attendance on the Saturday of the Open Championship at St Andrews will be the first by a member of the Royal Family since Princess Margaret visited Muirfield when Lee Trevino won the second of his two titles in 1972. It is, however, a dual mission, for some of the day will be spent on Save the Children business in Dundee as well as a gala banquet at St Andrews in the evening. Royal interest in golf might be said to have been lukewarm since the days of the Duke of Windsor, who was both a keen player and spectator. However, there also signs of a new recruit. On his Concorde flight to the United States, en route for the US Open Championship at Medinah, a Royal hand touched Sandy Lyle on the shoulder.

It was Prince Andrew. The recent recipient of a set of clubs, Prince Andrew has tried his hand on the Royal Household course in the grounds of Windsor Castle and now needs some lessons. Who better than Lyle, who has a gift in this direction? Lyle has promised to send his Royal Highness his schedule so that between them they may find a free day. DENNIS THATCHER'S first visit to Chelmsford last week is one he be unlikely to du forget. Sir John Carter, his host and opponent, had to depart by ambulance with a broken ankle after the buggy in which he was travelling, tipped over going down the the 15th hole.

It was not that Mr Thatcher had to curtail his round that irritated him but that he was, with his partner, two up at the time and had to waive the f1 he was likely to pocket! JACK NICKLAUS will not be the only one to have been disappointed to learn that his third son, Gary, 21, missed the cut in last week's French Open at Chantilly, particularly after that first round of 68. So will the editors of the norresponsible American magazine Sports Illustrated who, when Gary was still a teenager, made him the subsject of a full-length feature, front-cover picture and all. Gary will now be the subject of more public attention at next week's Scottish Open at Gleneagles, though they will have eyes too for his father, who will be a spectator. MUCH is often made of golfers who perform the feat of scoring under their race. But is there, asks John Nettell, of Brokenhurst Manor, one who has done it more often than George Evans who retired as professional at West Hill 10 years ago? They play regularly and Nettell cannot recall the last time Evans, now rising but still with the most "natural swing returned a score of more than his age.

For his part Evans, who won the British Seniors championship in 1963, has never kept count, though only a few weeks ago he did, at 78, have 68 and all done in hours, which he regards as "plenty long Walton triumphs in play-off to win French Open By Richard James in Chantilly IRELAND'S Philip Walton West Germany, in a sudden a 20-ft birdie putt on the French Open at Chantilly, It was the former Walker Cup amateur's first PGA European Tour victory and a lucrative week indeed, for besides his £58,330 first prize he took home a car valued at around £9,000 for a hole-in-one in a second round 66. Walton's last-gasp birdie at the 562-yard 18th earned him a 69 to match the 275 of Langer whose the under best round of a day of high winds and storm showers. Nick Faldo's hopes of completing a -trick of French Open wins were dashed as he took 38 to come home with a 72 and a 277 total, leaving him sharing fourth place with American Rick Hartmann (71). Argentina's Eduardo Romero was third on 276. Langer, after his brilliant closing round, started favourite in the play -off, which at the same 198-yard 16th where Walton holed a five-iron shot for his ace on Friday.

After two threes there, however, it was the blond Dubliner who took the title with a twoputt par four at the 17th after Langer had bunkered his approach. Faldo, seven- par after birdies at fifth eighth, was leading by a stroke as he approached the ninth, but he drove into the rough to run bogey five, then bogeyed the next two holes as well after bunkered second shots. His last chance disappeared at the short 16th where he faced a 15-ft birdie attempt but ended up three putting after missing a two-foot return. Richard Boxall, who heads the Equity and Law points league with 237 birdies and seven eagles from 65 tournament rounds this year, had high hopes of adding to his Italian Open victory in May when he was tieing Faldo for the lead after an outward half of 34. But his putting touch deserted him and he dropped four strokes in five holes to end on 73 for 278 and joint-sixth place with Bernard Gallacher (71), Ronan Rafferty (72), Malcolm Mackenzie (68) and Zimbabwe's Mark McNulty (73).

Barnard ends drought By Bill Johnson BRITAIN'S Diane Barnard had a closing round of 69 for her first tour victory yesterday in the BMW German Classic at Hubberath, near Dusseldorf. Miss Barnard, 26, from Lancashire, finished with a 10- under-par aggregate of 278- one stroke clear of Corinne Dibnah, the former British Open champion from Australia to collect a £10,500 winner's cheque. Having turned professional seven years ago, Miss Barnard yesterday utilised her experience windswept course at Royal Lytham, where she was a member as an amateur, to good advantage. It was not until the final turn, however, that she got her nose in front after starting the day three strokes behind Miss Dibnah.

The Scot was soured by last year's decision to end the tenure of Nashwan's trainer Dick Hern at West Isley stables owned thee Queen. But then a fairy godmother in the shape of Sheikh Hamdan Al-Maktoum came along both for the veteran trainer -for whom a new training premises will be available next year and the jockey, who was given a personal retainer which supthe exclusive connecPlanted, Major Hern. Over the past week, the significance of those events came to fruition as Carson collected his fourth classic of 1990 on Sheikh Hamdan's Salsabil in a six-day spell during which he rode 21 winners. From Friday, until Salsabil's win in the fourth race on yesterday's card at The Curragh, he had won 13 times. At Newcastle on Saturday, his six winners from seven rides equalled.

the feats of Gordon Richards and Alec Russell, the only previous jockeys to win six times on a single programme this century. Carson, 47, in clocking up his six-timer, displayed all the qualities which have kept him at the top for the past two decades. Pace, judgment, strength in a finish, and sheer endurance packed into a deceptively-tiny frame give him the appearance of a man half his age. The Newcastle romp began in the familiar colours of Lord Weinstock on the Dick Herntrained Arousal in the Royal Mail Penny Black Stakes, in which the filly had six lengths to spare over Victory Piper. Then Soweto, trained by Gavin Pritchard-Gordon, readily Won the Claiming Stakes before Parliament Piece provided the only negative note of the day behind Yearsley in the Journal 'Good Morning' Handicap.

Mapple's record By Jane Elliott another decisive victory having skied to within two buoys of the world record in Friday's qualifying round. On Saturday he was the only man to ski into the 10-metre shortening, finishing an incredible buoys farther than his nearest rival, Carl Roberge, from the United States. Mapple and his American wife Deena, who was leading the women's slalom and jump events, were disappointed MOTOR RACING Greco springs surprise in Dusseldorf in 33, leaving her just one stroke clear of Miss Dibnah, Alison Nicholas and Karen Lunn. But the Lancashire golfer proved equal to the task by holing putts of 10 feet for two more birdies at the 11th and 13th holes. Miss Dibnah is a tough competitor and her response came with birdies at the 15th and 16th but, like Miss Barnard, she dropped a shot at the difficult long 17th hole and failed to force a play-off at the 18th when her putt from 20 feet finished inches short of the hole.

Carson tactically outmanoeuvred Ray Cochrane on the favourite Dance Spectrum, his smooth winning run offering a stark contrast to his rival's apparent tactics. Al Maheb eventually won by stop a length and half for the Alec Stewart stable and, half-anhour later, Ternimus had a similar winning margin over Surcoat in the Coraline cap, where Bill Elsey supplied the first two. Another Sheikh Hamdan winner was Peter Walwyn's Tadwin in the Wynyard Classic Northumberland Sprint Trophy, before Hot Desert, owned by Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, completed the jockey's glory day in the EBF Hexham Maiden Stakes. Saturday's honours were partially shared, but inevitably with less ceremony, by the astonishing John Williams who added a Warwick fourtimer to his 25-1 afternoon success at Chepstow on Keep Your Word. Whereas Carson was already at the top of his profession at the start of the 1970s, Williams was a bread-and-butter jump jockey in those days, but he is clearly improving month by month.

The composure which the Welshman has employed to such good effect in major sprints has come to the notice of some prominent trainers, and a score by the end of the season of at least 70 is likely ATHLETICS SOUTHERN WOMEN'S Div 1 (Chelmsford): 1.
