With a three-under-par tworound aggregate of 141 Lorenzi, winner three times Europe this year, leads by three strokes from Britain's Kitrina Douglas and Helene Anderson from Sweden. A testing breeze added to the difficulties and play was again excruciatingly slow with rounds taking more than five hours. Distracted by a steward, Lorenzi pushed her drive into trouble at the sixth, then took three putts for a triple bogey seven. After three putts on the next green Lorenzi set about her task.

She holed from 10 feet for a birdie at the short ninth, rolled in a putt of 25 yards for an eagle at the long 13th then hit a fouriron to four feet for a two at the short 17th to come home 34. Earlier Douglas, who had shared the overnight lead with the French professional, had been 14 holes. Murray steps out to stride ahead of field By Michael Williams FOR A MAN who sounds as if he ought to be hobbling about on stick, Andrew Murray has shown a remarkably clean pair of heels to the rest of the field in the Panasonic Euroat Walton Heath. peanopen suffering from an arthritic condition in his left hip, medically known as spondylitis, Murray has nevertheless danced round in 66 and 68 to lead, by four strokes, a tournament for the first time years on the circuit.

Needless to say of someone who has never finished higher than 50th on the money list, the winner's enclosure is a place Murray, 33, of dry, Mancunian humour, is not familiar with and he has a few furlongs to go yet before he can contemplate being led into it. One of his first thoughts was how his game would stand up under the eye of the television cameras? Probably outwardly calm, he thought but "as with a duck on a pond, paddling like hell The spondylitis was diag. nosed only last July, a friend who is also a specialist cheerfully telling him that his career might last another two years and had he thought about doing CARD Hole Yards 410 516 391 422 174 489 390 395 9 189 OF THE COURSE Par Hole Yards Par 10 341 4 11 521 12 462 13 470 14 465 15 404 4 16 475 17 165 3 18 432 Out 3,376 36 In 3,735 36 Yards 7,108. Having led the field after the first round, Murray could hardly believe it when, in a blustery that made the parched heathland golf course play like a bagatelle board, he made five birdies in his first six holes. He came down to earth by missing a putt of a yard for a sixth birdie at the eighth and then three-putted the ninth.

Sufficiently sobered up, the rest of his round was less eventful. It is not often these days, other than still on the continent, that sponsors deem it necessary to import an American especially for the occasion, but Scott Hoch has paid his dues with a couple of 69s. An eagle three at the 11th, Darlington take charge JOHN HOWSON and Philip Steadman steered Darlington into the lead after the first day of the English Champion Club tournament at Southport and Ainsdale yesterday, writes Bill Meredith. Both had four-under-par 68s on a day when a gusty wind made life difficult. Howson's card had no fewer than nine threes, while Steadman had a two at the 10th in a fine inward 32.

The home club are in second place, along with Sundridge Park. ICE HOCKEY Durham lose O'Connor in training spill By Howard Bass THE DETAILS DURHAM WASPS suffered a severe setback to their defence of the Norwich Union Cup when Mike O'Connor, their star Canadian defender, damaged an Achilles tendon during training. He may be out for several months and will be sorely missed by Wasps at Nottingham today. The key match in southern group should be the Sunday visit of Cardiff to Gillingham, home of the Medway Bears, who twice won away last weekend.

Cardiff, playing in their first cup and newly promoted to the Heineken Premier Division, gained a 9-1 victory last Sunday in their opening skirmish at Peterborough. The Welsh side include defender. Doug McEwen alongside his Canadian compatriots Shannon Hope and Steve Moria. Peterborough and Streatham, both yet to score a point, meet in London today with the home team bolstered by their new Czechoslovakian left-winger, Josef Lukac, who makes his debut after injuring his shoulder. With his more famous brother, Vincet Lukac, leading the attack, Streatham's other two newcomers, goallie Jim Graves and Randy Oswald, should steady a hitherto shaky defence.

With many young faces in the team, the strength in depth, particularly in the men's heavyweight team, is reflected by five finalists out of a possible eight. Still dominant is Steve Redgrave, rowing with new partner Berrisford and chasing the elusive goal of the coxless and coxed titles with cox Pat Sweeney. Although Redgrave and Berrisford are not yet as consistent as the former pairing of Redgrave and Andy Holmes, they have great strength. There are fast crews challenging from East Germany, the Soviet Union and Romania, who are also attempting the double.

The eight, with an average. age of 20, have raced with great spirit this week, reaching the final in the fastest time by defeating the Soviet Union with a show of aggressive and technically mature rowing. But then some of the crew are recent world junior medallists and include Searle and Opholtzer, of Oxford, Walker and Hulls, London University, Brittin, this year's Cambridge president, and two times junior gold medallist Tim Foster. The coxless four are also a class crew made up of Seoul Olympians who all finished fourth last year in three different crews. The lightweight four of Stuart Forbes, Robin Williams, Nick Howe and Nick Strange have suffered through illness this week, but if they are fully fit today they will be in contention.

So too will the lightweight women's four, who were clear winners at Lucerne seven weeks ago and in their qualifying race for the final here. HOCKEY Havant seek revenge as season starts early By Chris Moore FAMILIAR players in new club colours will be much in evidence this weekend when the Poundstretcher National League makes an early start to its second season. allow England to prepare for, and compete in, the World Cup in Lahore next February, there will be a lengthy midseason break so the early matches could assume addiimportance. Havant, beaten by Southgate on goal difference for the title last season, will have revenge on their mind when they meet Bromley at Newstead Woods today (2pm). Bromley beat Havant in the Hockey Association Cup semi-final, robbing the Hampshire club of their chance to collect a consolation title.

Southgate must wait until tomorrow to open their campaign when they visit Stourport at Redditch (2). Having completed her victorywith a spectacular volley played off her toes, Miss Graf ran off court, pushing aside the television reporter waiting to interview her and immediately left the ground with leg cramps.

Agassi won a fifth set for the first time in six attempts with his 6-1, 4-6, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Jimmy Connors while Lendl beat Tim Mayotte 6-4, 6-0, 6-1. In their five previous meet-, hits back ings Lendl has tended to permit Agassi the encouragement of one set. That was the case at the same stage of these championships a year ago, and Agassi could do with all the help he can get after spending yesterday recuperating one of the most emotional and nervously exhausting matches of his life against Connors. The veteran Connors, who looked indanger of being swamped in the first set, complained of dizziness and nausea when leading 4-1 in the second and told his wife Patti he did not think he would last out.

Yet two games later he came out fighting again like a wounded lion. Agassi, who was booed at the start and again when he reached match points, to cope further distractions by Connors before taking the final set 6-4.
