Drake Breaks With Oklahoma Aggies I 1 7 Quits Conference Over Bright Slugging Bradley Hints Similar Move In Short Time League's ailure To Probe Beef Is Cited DES MOINES la Nov 27 (UR) Drake University pulled out of si the Missouri Valley Conference tonight in protest against the handling of the contro versial Johnny Bright injury case and Bradley University indicated that it would follow suit The Drake athletic council also voted to at once all athlet ic with Oklahoma A College whose tackle Wilbanks Smith injured Bright a record breaking Negro halfback in a football game Oct 20 ractured Jaw Drake officials charged that i Smith deliberately slugged Bright to force him out of the game Bright suffered a broken jaw and was forced to retire from col lege competition The Drake council' said it took the action because of the to investi gate the assault failure of the conference to investigate the total situation surrounding the game and refusal of the conference to take action in any In Peoria Ill president David Blair Owen of Bradley indicated that his school would join Drake in its withdrawal personally feel that Bradley will follow action yery Owen said the final decision rests with our faculty athletic committee not crusading not protesting but we voted with Drake in the Bright matter and we were he added However Owen said'that any ac tion that might be taken by Brad ley would not include cancellation of athletic relations with Okla homa A had the best of relations with A he said Oklahoma A athletic di rector Henry Iba refused to com ment in Stillwater Okla and Ag gies Coach Whitworth could not be reached However an aide said that the school to see a fine old school like Drake withdraw from the Missouri Not Pleased A Drake spokesman said athletic council reached its decis ion only after a careful deliberation of the positive and negative values connected with membership in the Missouri Valley expansion of the confer ence to include schools from the Great Lakes (Detroit) to the Gulf of Mexico (Houston Tex) has cre ated numerous conference prob lems Lack of conference action in the Bright case was the culminating event forcing the council to its de cision Speculation that Drake would take extreme action of its own came when faculty representatives of the conference ruled they were without authority to take discipli nary action in the Bright case Brights injuries in the Aggie game ultimately brought ah end to his collegiate football career His jaw was wired until yesterday forcing him to restrict his diet to soups and other liquids In three years of collegiate football Bright gained 5903 yards and averaged 2361 yards a game in 25 games Early this year he broke the all time ground gain Ing record of Charlie (Choo Choo) Justice of North' Carolina Bright averaged 61 yards each time he carried the ball piling up' a rushing total of 3134 yards He completed 157 out of 31 passes for another 2769 yards and an average of 177 yards university will honor all present contracts for games with conference members except those with Oklahoma A a council spokesman said are requesting officials of that institu tion to agree to cancel these con tracts has been a member of Y' A A 1 who was an all state forward at Reno IvAv High two years ago will start at cen ter for University of Nevada riday night at Chico in the opening basketball game The six foot five inch sophomore will ap pear in an otherwise all veteran quintet against the Wildcats (The "Am i Aq ml OHlS i 5 sA: i KaHIHr Pack Scores 109 Against Marines A scoring spree the likes of which had never before been seen over the broad expanse of hardwood at University of gymnasium was staged last night by the Wolf Pack varsity basketballers who rolled up 109 points The opposition in a pre schedule practice contest Marines from Hawthorne reg istered a respectable 43 points to aid in a combined score of 152 dig its!
