Two other Republicans who won House seats from the South in the Eisenhower sweep of 1952 Reps Richard Poff and Joel Broyhill came through again this time Ives who had been hand picked by Gov Thomas Democrats held in this traditionally strong Republican stronghold Increasing returns produced the strong possibility that the Repub licans would make a clean sweep of Kansas GOP candidates led in all state wide and congressional races with more than a third of 2919 precincts reporting The winners included: Sen Andrew Schoeppel a key man in the Eisenhower ad successful fight for flexible farm price Republicans running for re election Gov Goodwin Knight Sen Thomas Kuchel and Lt Gov Harold Powers opened up leads over their Democratic foes tonight on the basis of early returns Rep Samuel Yorty (D) was trailing Kuchel in home town Los Angeles and Los Angeles city councilman Ed ward Roybal (D) was run ning behind Powers in the same vote heavy county Both Yorty and Roybal had hoped to carry Los Angeles county by substantial margins to balance expected upstate and rural strength for Kuchel and Powers Knight one of the most vigor ous and colorful campaigners in recent years in California was building up a more substantial margin over Graves than either Kuchel or Powers were able to show over their opponents Knight concentrated his cam naicn in southern California and he was running well ahead of Graves in that area although registered Democrats in the county number 1356000 against only 1014000 Republicans Returns from 3968 of the 22899 precincts gave: Governor Knight 273343 Graves Guy Cordon Holds Advantage PORTLAND Ore Nov 2 (UR) Sen Guy Cordon the incumbent I Republican took an early leac over his Democratic opponent Richard Neuberger in the Ore gon general election tonight and Republican Gov Paul L' Patterson held a slight lead over Joseph Carson Jr in early returns in I the governor race I Neuberger a 42 year old writer I and state legislator who was con I sidered to have the best chance of I winning a senatorial election in Oregon in 40 years was running more than 2000 vfttes behind his 64 year old opponent in early counting The incomplete unofficial vote I in 142 of 2499 precincts gave: I Cordon 11927 Neuberger I 9659 or governor: 141 of 2499 precincts: Patterson 10766 Carson 9376 3387 4670 Ray Peterson of the board of commissioners was leading McKenzie closed at 6 pm and lengthened those leads steadily throughout the night and into the early morn ing hours Young defeated former KeP 'over their Democratic Walter Baring wno was se ing to regain the House seat he occupied for four years until Young upset him by 771 votes in 1952 Young as did Brown cam paigned heavily upon the premise that President Eisenhower need ed a GOP controlled House and Senate in order to complete the administration's legislative pro gram Russell who also took an early lead and built it up steadily as the vote counting progressed seemed assured of reelection bar ring some last minute changes in voting trends This appeared very unlikely however Russell was leading Pittman even in Clark county where his lead was increasing slowly Voting on the highly contro versial to law was not conclusive early this morning but the general trend appeared to point toward the probable defeat of Question One This initiative sought the outright repeal of the to law The latter was enacted as an initiative in 1952 by a 1034 vote margin Rex Bell of Las Vegas a Re publican was elected lieutenant governor by a top heavy margin over his Democratic opponent Clack County Assemblyman have been reelected These included Democratic Sec retary of State John Koontz who outdistanced Republican Walter Naismith of Tonopah State Controller Peter Merialdo a Re publican who left his Democratic opponent Covington of Sparks far behind State Printer Jack McCarthy a Demo crat who defeated Wesley Davis Reno Republican Super intendent of Public Instruction Glenn A Duncan who swamped Victor of Las Vegas in a non partisan race and Supreme Clerk Ned Turner a Democrat who was steadily building his lead over Ellen Couch Carson City Republican Democrat Harvey Dickersonon of a former Nevada governor son of a former Nevada governor defeated Republican Dale Murphy of Reno for attorney general handily In the six man regent race In cumbents Roy A Hardy and Dr Louis Lombardi of Reno and Reno Attorney Bruce Thompson outdistanced the field The beaten candidates were Weld Ar nold of Carson City Buck of Reno and Ray Germain of Las Vegas However Germain could overtake Hardy if he should get a heavy vote in Clark county when final returns are in but the trend was not too heavy in this direction Questions Two Three our and ive all dealing with various constitutional amend ments all were passed by better than two to one margins Two of them abolished the elective of fice of surveyor general to which the incumbent Democrat Louis errari was unopposed for re election He apparently will be out of a job Jan 1 Accurate voting totals were not available from Elko county at one a or state senator from the county however it appeared Newton Crumley former Univer sity of Nevada regent was lead ing newspaper publisher Warren Monroe on incomplete returns bv a two to one margin 2641 to 1358 or Elko county district judge Incumbent Judge Taylor Wines was leading George
