containing new five figure numbers for most Reno and Sparks telephones began Monday accord ing to district man ager for Bell Telephone Company of Nevada A distinctive overprint on the front coven of the book requests subscribers to use the new direc tory starting at 12:01 am Sunday Octobe 7 when the new numbers become effective Bruce cautioned customers to use the old directory fo looking up Reno and Sparks numbers until October 7 changeover On' October 7 old books should be destroyed as most Charging that Echo Hill treated him disdainfully after he had given her a joint tenancy in $500000 worth of his property August Hill yesterday told his story in district court as the trial of his suit to re cover the real estate opened The legal battle centers on a period between July and Sep tember of 1950 when Mr Hill al leges his wife persuaded him to put his property in their joint names Since that time the two have struggled over control of the holdings which include several prominent Reno business sites On the stand yesterday Mr Hill said that Mrs Hill had bothered him constantly before he finally gave his approval to the property transfers Also testifying yesterday were four physicians who said that in view of Mr age he could have been Clyde Brown a carpenter who had worked for Mr and Mrs Hill dur ing 1950 also testified The trial enters its second day today It is being heard by Judge A Maestretti Two Dozen Offenders Are Given 'Hearings In Municipal William Elam recently elected sheriff of Placer county Calif was instantly killed near Lake Tahoe yesterday afternoon when his car somersaulted over Dollar Hill Investigating authorities said the car a new Oldsmobile coupe skidded into a rail on the left side of the highway on a steep curve then careened back over the bankon the right side of the road The car rolled nearly 100 yards down the steep embankment and Sheriff body was found 50 feet from th i wreck Scene of the accident is approxi mately seven miles west of Kings Beach authorities said Washoe county deputies who were first notified of the accident called California highway patrolmen and Constable Harry Johansen of Tahoe City to the scene Identification of the body was made by a tie clasp engraved of Placer 4 Coroner rancis 'West re ported that exact cause of the acci dent was not determined but that a heavy rain which resulted in slip 47 shotgun pellets had entered his face and neck Although some of the pellets were still imbedded yes terday and some damage was done Mr eyes it was not be lieved that his condition was serious or Manuel Beck of Reno received superficial wounds of the face while hunting 20 miles south of Reno Beck was struck by pellets from the shotgun of Dr Leo Nanninl of Reno it was reported who told officers for the state of California today but her job was being contested Mrs Esther Bromberg has been hired as a senior psychiatric work er at Mendocino State Hospital Ralph Littlestone mental hygiene personnet officer said tonight The state personnel board earlier had withdrawn the certification needed for her to take the job but reinstat ed it at a San rancisco meeting of the board Littlestone said Her husband Dr Walter Brom berg was fired as supervisor of sex psychopaths at Mendocino Hospital September 17 An appeal by Brom berg was scheduled for hearing Oc tober 15 Bion Gregory personnel "conform with those of the depart Nevada Transit Co Burglarized in Reno Nothing Is Missing Crusade "fdr reedom Roll HAWTHORNE Nev Oct 1 A flash explosion in a shell loading plant at the big Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot today killed five workmen and seriously injured at least five others Navy spokesmen said Ten workmen two of them women were in a loading room at the plant when theexplosion its origin still unknown struck at 1:55 pm ellow workers ignored searing heat and the danger of new explosions to drag seven victims from the smoking flame filled room Six were alive and one was dead A dispensary attendant reported one of the injured work men died a few hours later Intense heat prevented lhe rescuers from immediately reaching three other workmen still inside the blast swept room Cmdr A Quinn acting commander of the 400 square mile depot said there was they could have sur vived both the blast and the flames Identification Proves Difficult Shortly before dark volunteers entered the room where the explosion took place and recovered the shattered bodies of the three men Identification was made extremely difficult because the bodies had been mangled and charred 'Condition of the injured workers ranged from critical to serious aint hope was held for the life of one of two women injured Dispensary attendants refused to identify the blast victims pending notification of next of kin and formal clear ance by naval authorities Victims removed from the blast struck room were black ened and blistered by the blinding explosion and some had only charred fragments of clothing clinging to them A possible greater tragedy was averted by the swift and safe evacuation of nearly 50 civilian workers and military per sonnel from other rooms in the loading plant one of many on the vast military reservation Evacuation of Plant Ordered Evacuation of the plant and of surrounding structures was ordered because of fear of new explosions caused by a fire which followed the blast At 4 pm' Cmdr Quinn 'assem bled a crew of volunteers to enter the plant to extinguish flames be lieved licking toward large stores of explosives in other rooms within the concrete structure But he changed his mind before they entered the smoking building saying plant is hot why take a chance until it cools down The Mineral county sheriff and coroner and the Hawthorne fire chief were 'refused admittance to the blast area because of fear of1 new explosions Ninety minutes re ported the flames appeared to be andJhajt tjiera no linger seemed to be any danger of any new blasts But he admonished still tell how much of the stuff from the blast may have sprayed into other parts of the No Chain Explosion Residents of the adjacent city of Hawthorne (pop 5000) were nerv ous1 fearing a possible chainexplo sion blit Quinn said there was chance of new blasts among the widely spaced nearby loading plants and storage bunkers The depot is one or the largest ammunition storage centers in the nation A Navy twin engined Douglas airplane took off from the Naval Air Station at Alafrieda Calif with Navy corpsmen a doctor and plasma for the explosion scene Plans to fly the injured to Oak land naval hospital were One man who was to be flown there died and another woman was in too critical condition to be moved The others will remain at the depot dispensary Slum on Cause Naval authorities declined to elaborate on cause and exact nature of the explosion However it was learned unofficially that the blast occurred during the filling of some rocket or bazooka type pro jectiles i The ten man loading crew in cluded mostly workers who were new at their jobs it was reported The spraw ling depot borders the southwestern shore of Walker Lake nearly 130 milles southeast of Reno The mishap was the first of its na ture oldest employes at the depot could remember In addition to shells bazookas torpedoes aerial bombs depth charges and other destructive de vices are filled with explosives at the depot were being alerted today to stand by for first preview sometime later this month of futuristic warfare waged with atomic weapons Invitations an authoritative source said are going to members of five congressional committees to attend the tacti cal atomic tests expected to get under way in Nevada in the next several weeks Not all the congressmen will be asked to show up at the same time during the tests which may continue into early November But it is understood that an op portunity to witness some phase of the new experiments will be given to members of the joint Atomic Energy the House and
