8 NAUGATUCK NEWS Dec. 11, 1968 Chemical Firm Mixes Oil. And Water Successfully BOSTON (UPD The problem of preventing pollution to the world's beaches from oil slicks gave scientists at Humble Oil and Refining Co. something to shoot for mix oil and wa. ter, treated with Humble's ne product corexit 7364, oil and! water mix readily to form a harmless suspension, which the company hopes may provide the key to preventing pollution from slicks surrounding oil tanker wrecks at sea.

Dr. Edward Corino, a research chemist for the compa. riy said Tuesday past attempts to disperse oil slicks caused by Wrecks were frustrated due to the highly toxic nature of the dispersant that caused great harm to marine life and water foul, new dispersant has proved its ability to clean up effectively, 1 Corino said. He said the major difference be. tween Corexit 7664 and other dlspersants is that the new pro.

duet Is Water based while the others were hydro-carbon-based and highly toxic. Breaks Them Up JCorexit breaks up slicks into minute droplets to allow natuf. al. bacteria to break down the suspension thus caused assists biodegredation," Corino explained. it' means the new product may be able to disperse oil slicks before they reach and without harming sea life.

'We're not: alone in this area," said, James Avery, public, relations manager of Hum-' ble's eastern region. "Most of the major oil companies have or will have equivalent products." A spokesman said the effort to find a harmless dispersant was after the Torrey Canyon ran aground 'early in 1967 causing widespread death to marine life and damage to resort areas on both sides o) the English Accelerate Search "The Jan. 20, 1967 accident in the River Weymouth caused us to accelerate the search," a Humble spokesman said. that time, a tanker heading a Weymouth, south of spilled a large. 'amount of oil into the river.

Humble revealed. the product in its description of its new Clean Seas Program to prevent oil pollution. The First Time "Corexit 7664 has been on the market for a number of weeks but this is the first time we have publicized it," Avery said. The philosophy of the pro- WERE PRICES sun YOUR gram is simple: prevent spilling oil into the sea; if oil is leased, contain it; after it if conHjnfd, remove as much possible and finally clean It up. Corexit, Humble hopes, will assist in removing slicks and cloanlng up areas covered with released oil.

To prevent accidents, Humble said it had purchased a lake near Grenoble, France which It has converted into a miniature ocean. On this ocean the com. pany launched a fleet of scale- model tankers which captains- in-training must navigate for two weeks to prepare for the real thing. Humble It had even built a scale model Suez Canal for the captains to try their hand at before easing their craft into scaled down docks and wharfs. miniature ocean is at the mercy of a wave-making machine which can simulate a ocean storm.

One Problem Met The containment problem, is being met with plastic booms now stored in all major ports. The' booms, similar to fishing nets, will be strung around oil slicks to keep them from spreading; Humble hopes that precautions against oil spillage combined with the promising methods of treating slicks may some day eliminate the coastal menace of oil pollution. "I guess it took a series of disasters like the Torrey Canyon accident to induce the industry to tackle the problem," AVery said. "And there are still a lot of problems to be solved." "But," Corino said, "Corexit 7664-is a new approach." Weather Forecast 'WINDSOR LOCKS, (UPI) The Connecticut state weather forecast: Sunny with moderating temp, eratures today, highest around 30.
