AatoQio CoUegB By ALEXANDER KAHN United Press Sports Writer LOS ANGELES Nov 22 (UP)r University of Southern California today won the Pacific Coast Confer ence championship and the right to represent the west in the Rose Bowl by edging out a fighting UCLA eleven 6 to 0 in the wildest football climax seen in years in the Los Angeles Coliseum The finish of the game found 102050 fans shriek ing hysterically as the Bruins drove to the Southern Cali fornia four yard line then had their fourth down pass intercepted in the end zone by Halfback Gordon Gray The victory left the Trojans the only undefeated conference team on the Pacific coast arid the vote to choose the western Rose Bowl representative Monday will be' a mere formality The Trojans made their lone touchdown early in the second period by capitalizing on the known Bruin weakness against flat passes A 32 yard flip from Quarterback Jim Powers to Halfback Jack Kirby in the end zone gave them the only score of the game And for the next 40 minutes of play a desperate UCLA team that had vowed it would win this game to make its season a successful one smashed at the strong Trejan line only to be turned back time after time 4 But the greatest drive the Bruins put on was the fourth period march down to the four yard line Equally true was the fact that there Southern Cali fornia put on its greatest goal line stand of the season In that march the Bruins went from Southern 48 where the drive started (to the shadows of the goal before being stopped In the desperate drive ullback Jerry Shipkey ripped the Trojan line to shreds until the Bruins needed only two yards for a first down and foyr for A touch down There USG held On ourth Down And on the fourth down play Halfback Ernie Johnson took a short lateral' ran back to find passing room and heaved jnto the end zone where Gray made his in terception and thus ended the drive The bitter battle was mainly a contest between the two most powerful' lines in the west The forward wall was bul warked at tackle by John errara and at end by Paul Cldarj whila the Bruin line featured chiefly the work of Center Don Paul and End Tom ears Powers to Kirby 1 Trojan Quarterback Jim Pow ers a substitute for first string signal caller George Murphy was the inspiration for the Trojan team as well as throwing the scoring pass and the man who caught that also was a substitute who has been only limited playing time this season although one of the fastest runners on the squad Bruins showed their power first in th opening period when they backed up two first downs but the Southern California line halted an attempt at a sustained drive and the teams began ex changing kicks Verl Lillywhite got off a 60 yard kick that set the Bruins back on their 20 but a few minutes later Cal Rossi did the same get ting off a 63 yard quick one that sent the Trojans reeling back to their six In Second Period Only score in the game came early in the second period South ern California got the ball on its 32 after a weak UCLA kick from the five It was then that Powers threw to Kirby The Trojans had capitalized just before the score on weakness in guarding against flat passes Murphy made three quick first downs on flatties to Gordon Gray and Kirby got to the Bruin 19 but lost the ball on downs uu The third quarter opened a Trojan drive that carried them from their 35 to the UCLA 32 where the Bruins forced them kick over the end zone UCLA immediately generated its own drive for two first downs but was kick The Trojans couldn gain and they also kicked making it
