June (Special) Two automobiles were badly damaged in recent accidents near Tonopah but occupants of the cars escaped injury Mrs Renee A Strom of Twin alls Idaho was uninjured when she dozed at the wheel and her car a 1949 ord sedan went out of control left the high way crossed the road and came to rest on ts top The accident oc curred 80 miles east of Tonopah and the car was completely wrecked Briggs of Las Vegas said he was crowded off the road by an approaching vehicle 37 miles north of Tonopah His car a 1949 Chev rolet rolled completely over land ing on its wheels Dlr Briggs was able to get back in his car and drive away but the body of the vehicle was damaged and the headlights and windows were shat tered CARSON VALLEY June 14 Carson Valley Day was celebrated Saturday and defied even the weather and became one of the most successful occasions in tfie years in which it has been ob served The parade was followed by 1 he awarding of prizes in the town square and at 12 the serving of the barbecue began Inpite of the great crowd those in charge had such an efficient method of handling the food and dispensing it that in one hour all had been served The conveyor beit system was used and plates filled with delicious meat cottage cheese rolls pickles and olives were passed along as fast as those in line could take them Coffee and ice cream were served at points in the park Outstanding in the Carson Valley Day parade among the riders in the Dressier riding group was Dolph Dressier 85 years old and sitting on his horse with the ease of the younger men with whom he rode Each year Mr Dressier rides with this group and in the colorful clothes that they all wear he is as resplendent as any and looks forward to this day when each year he is again a rider skillful and easy and enjoying every minute It was he who received the trophy for the Dressier Company from the chairman of the parade committee TONOPAH June 14 (Special) uneral services for Airs Lena Gregovich Bateman vadan and Tonopah resident for many years who died at her home on June 7 after a long illness were held from St Episcopal Church on Thursday afternoon The Rev William Wolfe offi ciated Burial took place in the Tonopah cemetery with George Barra McCulloch Scott Mullins Robert Shields Jr Mark Bradshaw and Bill Thomas as casketbearers Mrs Bateman was born on Aug 15 1884 at Eureka Nev She re ceived her early education there and was graduated with honors from Eureka High School complet ing the lour year course in three years After attending business college in San rancisco Mrs Bateman taught school at Baker Currant Pinto Creek and Tonopah She came here in 1905 and in 1913 was married to the late Bryden Bateman a well known hoist engi neer and one time Nye county dep uty assessor Mrs Bateman was an active member of St Mark's Church and sang in the choir for a number of years She was also a member of the church guild Surviving are a daughter Elea nor and for Wells after meeting Saturday afternoon of Alayor LeoN King with Gov Charles Rus sell chairman and Robbins Cahill secretary of the Nevada Tax com mission Grant Sawyer Elko county district attorney Russel Weekspresident of Wells Chamber of Commerce and Sharp Wells councilman attended the meeting as observers It was brought out at the meet ing that there are at present four unrestricted gambling licenses in Wells and that the commission has pending seven more applications Should all licenses pending be granted Wells would have twice as many licenses as other Nevada towns of comparable size and busi ness A comparison could be drawn according to the tax commission with Elko which now has for its size only nine unrestricted licenses According to Mayor King the Wells council will consider proce dures that will be mutually agree able to the state commission and to operators and applicants at a meeting to be called before June 30 when the tax commission again convenes in Carson City direction of the Town and Country Homemakers Club was rated by the large crowd pres ent in the Douglas County High School gym as the finest yet pre sented A beautiful setting was ar ranged on the stage and here were gathered the models under beat parasols in comfortable lounging chairs at the refreshment table and the children around the pool Mrs Jac Shaw served as com mentator and added much to 1he presentation by her descriptions ot the costumes and models The stores showing were the Carson Valley Mercantile Co and the Min den Dry Goods Store with garden furniture from the Alinden Mercan tile Co A shiny new barbecue was also shown and the chef in high cap and apron demonstrated the advantages of this fine jxjrtable outdoor appliance Tn charge of 1he show were the officers of the club
