SPORTL1GHT Canetra Performing Well I was delighted to hear about the successful progress oi. Naugaluck's John Caneira earlier this week, The former Eastern Connecticut pitching star hurls for Idaho Falls in the Pioneer League. The Angel farm team is presently in first place with a 30-26 record and Caneira has won seven ot those games while losing only one. The Naugatuck ace righthander has hurled 63 innings, striking out 56 and has compi led an earned run average of 1.86. John has.the best won and lost record on the staff, but Andy Castillo (6-1), Caneira's teammate is sporting a 1.13 ERA to lead the league.

Only four games separate the four rookie teams in the Pioneer league as of August 20. Idaho Falls is 30-26, Ogden (Co-Op) 28-27, Great Falls (Giants) 27-28 and Billings (Reds) 26-30. Ryan Express Slowed Down 1 had the opportunity to attend the Yankee-Angels game Sunday at Shea Stadium, which the Yanks won 2-1 on a double by Bobby Mercer and single by Craig Nellies in the last of the ninth. Larry Gura who brought up from Syracuse by the Yankees got the victory and looked impressive in Ms debut. The lefty went all the way, allowing nine hits and just one earned run, but was helped by two leaping catches in left field by Uoy While.

Both shots would have been in the Angel bullpen except (or the efforts of White. Although taking his I4lh loss against 16 wins, Nolan Rayn was remarkable. Ryan only allowed five nils and struck out seven Yankees to improve his major league lead to 295. Ryan throws smoke and il's hard lo believe he could lose to anyone. His 16 victories with Ihe Angels could be 25 wins wilh anyone else.

Manager Dick Williams recently said, "His change-up is faster than most guys' fast ball. Ryan is oul to break Sandy Koufax record of 383 strikeouts in one season and admits because his team doesn't have a chance at anything he is striving for individual records. On August 12, Ryan fanned 19 Red Sox batters to equal the record for a nine inning game and felt with a better call here and there he could have recorded at least three more. During the nexl Angel homesland, the Angel front office in cooperation with North American Rockwell Corporation, is planning a lest to measure the speed of Ryan's fast ball. Many say it will exceed the 95 M.P.H.

Utah Stars Uirt iMalone University of Maryland officials were stunned by Ihe news that prize freshman basketball slar Moses Malo'ne might sign a million dollar contracl with Ihe Utah Slarsof the ABA. Ulan General Manager Arnie Ferrin admitted he had made Ihe offer lo the high school sensation and Malone himself said there was a fifty-fifty chance he would accept Ihe offer. I'm not a Bill Walton fan by any means, but will give him credit for standing by his guns and finishing his college education at UCLA before signing a pro-contract. Somelhing is wrong with our system when a shorl professional career takes precedent over a college education.

Before you know it, pro sporls learns will be seeking players in grammar school. I realize il's difficult for a boy lo resist thai kind of an offer so rules should be made to stop it unless tbe individual is from a needy family. VttttUtJ, ItH Plje 11 YankeesTop Twins By VJTO STELLINO UPI Writer Roy White would like to leave the New York Yankees a present when he departs next season-the American League pennant. White, who's made it perfectly clear that he wants to be traded next year because He's been platoorjed by Manager Bill Virdon, is helping to keep the Yanks in the race this year. He's doing this even though he wants to go to a team that will play him everyday.

Named co-player of the week in Ihe American League last week when he had four hits in one game, White hit a two-run single in the four-run seventh inning Tuesday night to pace Ihe Yanks to a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins.
