ATKINSON: NO BAN AT WEMBLEY Hill quits after Coventry board 'concern' show 30 The Daily Tilcgraph Wednesday May i 198 Last Night's Bo Hug BMUrWS BEST AS I LE DOUX BOWS IN THREE ROUNDS By DONALD his oppponent's per any case for decisive victory By DENIS LOWE JON ATKINSON Manchester i d's manager will not be barred from the Wembley touchline for the FA Cup final against Brighton despite his heated clash with Eric Read the Bristol referee during Monday's League match at Arsenal Mr Atkinson who protested about the referee's decision to send off Remi Moses United's midfield player and was himself ordered from the bench was concerned that an early appearance before an A disciplinary commission could affect his Wembley plans Possible punishments for Mr Atkinson include a ban from the touchline seats and from leading his team out at Wembley But the A yesterday pointed out that three weeks are normally required to organise a commission Awaiting report We do not expect the referee's report until Wednesday and Mr Atkinson will have seven days to reply to our letter requesting his version of events" said a Lancaster Gate spokesman "It normally takes three weeks to set up a hearing and that would take us well beyond the Cup final but we cannot decide on any action until we receive the report" If the A dec ide to act Mr Atkinson who left for Majorca with his first team squad yesterday on a four-day break may be charged with bringing the game into disrepute Like Brighton's Steve Foster Moses is banned from playing in the final after his Highbury dismissal for aiming a head butt at Peter Nicholas Two-match suspension Moses starts a two-match susnension for passing 31 discip sistent two-nstea attacK When he realised it was all over Watts shouted and gestured angrily and tried to cross the ring to resume the battle When Kaylor's manager Terry Lawless tried to guide him back to his corner the American continued to gesticulate Kaylor presumably worried that his manager was about to be punched then tried to force his way across the ring Fortunately Jimmy Tibbs the young Londoner's second and a confidence of the supporters in the leadership was eroded In a statement issued yesterday the club said that Iain Jamieson will as expected take over as chairman from Friday The statement added: Under Mr Hill's guidance there has been criticism of our innovations and subsidiary commercial developments Indisputably lack of playing success has crucially eroded support even goodwill and confidence in the leadership has seriously waned Disaffection has emerged from the difficulty of distinguishing between the media's national football figurehead and the leader Coventry's soccer public expect to fulfil the club's repeated intentions to provide a winning team "This has been partially evident in recent demonstrations directed at Jimmy Hill himself and from which the team cannot be insulated" Hill's regret Mr Hill chairman of the club for the last three years after being unpaid managing director for the previous five obviously regretted having to make the decision to step down He felt that Coventry's run of 13 games without a win which has taken them to the edge of the relegation battle had little to do with his chairmanship Mr Hill said If the chairman is to be held responsible for playing success or failure or indeed monotonous competence Jimmy Hill chairman of Coventry for the last three years Scott Le Doux goes down from a Frank Bruno left hook at the end of the first round and must realise he is in for an unpleasant evening Mabbutt squeezes Spurs near Europe By A SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Southampton 1 Tottenham Hotspur 2 LAST-MINUTE goal by Gary Mabbutt drove Tottenham to the gateway of Europe and at the same time left Southampton's hopes of qualifying in ashes at the Dell last night VAN HIMST IS CONFIDENT "DENFICA'S second round victory over Lokeren of Belgium could count against them when they meet another Belgian side Ander-lect in the first leg of the UEFA Cup final in Brussels tonight Anderlecht's enthusiastic young trainer Paul Van Himst has had a lengthy chat with Robert Waseige the Lokeren manager on how to exploit Benfica's defence Van Himst who has steered Anderlecht to the top of the Belgian First Division since taking over in September is confident that his side can build a decisive lead for the second leg in Lisbon in two weeks' time Benfica hardly stand comparison with the side which graced five European Cup finals in the 1960s but are enjoying one of their best seasons for years ANDERLCHT American's purse which was believed to be about 10000 dollars The stewards are also considering an inquiry into both boxers' conduct Brawling continues The trouble started at the end of the first round when both continued punching for several seconds after the bell Mr Nathan eventually got them to return to their stools but had to battle his way between them early in the ceoond when they re-opened their brawling with fists heads and shoulders After Mr Nathan had lectured Watts both men took a firmer grip on their tempers Even so Kaylor obviously still fuming underneath fought with more aggression than usual and rather less skill and control This combination nevertheless gave him clear control of the contest and he was well on top when the end came Some of the crowd booed lustily though this may have been as much in protest at the American's behaviour as in disapproval of the referee's intervention Despite the controversy and the possibility of further action by the Board Kaylor has reason to restore their lead in the second half Southampton's dangerous front- 1 am prepared stand up and His long bludgeoning straight left had given him command of the contest from the opening seconds and by the time the referee had called a halt Le Doux was bleeding from the cut over the eye and from another wound on the left cheekbone He clearly had no answer to the accuracy and power of Bruno's punches and despite his commendable courage and long experience surely would have been dispatched before the 10 rounds had ended Some of the crowd thought Mr O'Connell had acted prematurely i and booed their disapproval but I did not share their opinion The cut was so serious that it required six stitches and in any case there was absolutely no point in the American con- Big forward step This is by far the most v-ninor-tant of Bruno's 15th quick Victories! Indeed last night he moved out of the novice ranks and took a firm step forward True Le Doux looking flabby at 16st 21b nearly half a stone heavier than his opponent is 34 and well past his best But he has mixed in good company including five world champions and learned his trade on the tough American circuit Bruno built his success on those long straight lefts but hurt the American with hooks and crosses Le Doux was on the floor from a left hook when the bell ended the first round He must have known then that his immediate future held only the prospect of pain and punishment "Bruno is one of the heaviest punchers I have ever met" he said I would put him in the top five alongside men like George Foreman and Ken Norton though it was the cut that beat me" Mark Kaylor the West Ham middleweight also retained his unbeaten record earning his 22nd consecutive victory by stopping Bobby Watts of the United States after 57 seconds of the fourth round of a turbulent battle Sid Nathan the referee called a halt when Watts was backed up against the ropes making no linary points and misses United's home matches against Swansea and Luton on Monday With Steve Coppell almost certain to miss Wembley after a knee operation and Moses ruled out United's team plans will have to be revised and several members of the squad are under treatment this week Arthur Albiston and Bryan Robson the captain may be fit to resume for Swansea's visit and Frank Stapleton is recovering from mild influenza But Arnold Muhren and Lou Macari may need another week's rest Southampton had to win to stay in contention for a A Cup place next season and this their first defeat in nine games left them to reflect ruefully on their lack of strike-power Their UEFA challenge was already faltering after five draws in six games and rampaging Spurs showed them the way to goal last night Extra skill Shilton had to produce class saves from Hoddle and Archibald before Brazil gave Spurs the tonic of a 12th-minute lead Southampton's hopes began to flicker again when a free-kick by Williams came back off Tottenham's defensive wall and Armstrong cracked in the equaliser with a fierce half-volley in the 25th minute Spurs with extra skill and experience invariably pulled the strings and O'Reilly Ferryman and Archibald all missed chances runners Moran and Wallace made little headway against a resolute Spurs defence and when Armstrong went off injured in the 65th minute Southampton lost an important cog in their midficld As the second half degenerated into a midfield scramble a draw looked the most likely result But Mabbutt had the last word Hoddle and Brazil opened up Southampton on the left and Mabbutt went on to fire a shot which Shilton could only knock out and back to him Mabbutt made no mistake with his second attempt Bobby Bobson the England manager watching from the stand must have been impressed by the early industry of Williams and Hoddle but both faded after the interval Hoddle Brazil be counted The crux of the matter is that Coventry have been in the First Division for 16 years a record only four other clubs have equalled In that time though we have not been able to win a major prize Avoiding relegation regularly has not satisfied the appetite of some supporters Fixed assets "Financially although the overdraft is £600000 the fixed assets including the Sky Blue Connexion a leisure complex covers that four-fold So the position is difficult but not desperate and many clubs would envy that balance sheet and breathing space" Mr Hill played for Brentford and Fulham between 1949 and 1960 and while with Fulham became chairman of the Professional Footballers' Aarociation in 1957 He led the negotiations to end the maximum wage in 1961 and retired the same year to take over as manager of Coventry then in the Third Division STEWART FLOORS IPSWICH Ipswich 1 West Ham 2 WEST HAM thanks to a late Ray Stewart penalty goal kept their outside chances of qualifying for Europe alive at Ipswich tonight At the same time Ipswich's European ambitions were finally ended by this seventh home League defeat The best the East Anglians can hope for is a mid-table position West Ham were gifted two goals by a young and makeshift Ipswich side After only nine minutes a long clearance from Parkes bounced on the edge of the Ipswich penalty area and Cooper allowed Goddard to head the ball into the net In the 80th minute with no real danger threatening Gernon brought down Goddard just inside the penalty area and Stewart stepped up to blast home the spot-kick West Ham had soak up some heavy Ipswich pressure in the closing stages but hung on to keep those European hopes alive Brilliant save Ipswich equalised Goddard's goal in the 33rd minute with a brilliant effort from D'Avray their young South African striker only his second goal of the season With his back to goal D'Avray turned and hit a left-foot volley into the corner of the net Cooper made amends for his earlier error by coming to Ipswich's rescue either side of half-time First he turned over a close-range shot from Bonds and then in the 57th minute made a quite brilliant save from Stewart's header Ipswich too had their chances of regaining the lead notably in the 71st minute when Turner hit Parkes's outstretched legs from close range With both sides going flat out for a winner the financial and economic side" he added Meanwhile Canadian cabinet ministers and FIFA officials officials have been meeting this week to discuss the North Americans' case It is believed that Harrv watched Aberdeen in several of their recent League matches and describes the game against Celtic as one of the roughest I've ever seen" He went on: I have never seen so much violent play in a game nor have I seen so much kicking in British football I am sure Aberdeen will not be allowed to employ this style in a European final Aberdeen played a hard game so hard in fact that at times it bordered on the edge of the rules You can say violent if you want though people may criticise me for saying so" However di Stefano did see some entertaining and for Real some worrying features in Aberdeen's play: The team moves so very well because they are well prepared physically When they are in possession it is difficult to get the ball away from them In defence thev are superb with a brilliant sweeper" Strachan best He said: "The attack goes like mad but of course we only saw them at home We will now go away and study the videos of how they played against Bayern and Waterschei" Di Stefano singled out Gordon Strachan as Aberdeen's best player He makes the whole side tick Mark McGhee is a born fighter He is unpolished a rough and tough rpan with a terrible surge He is the typical British tank in the role he plays Two other players who caught my eve were winger Peter Weir and goalkeeper Jim Leighton I studied the team as a whole not individually though They play 4-2-4 but when they attack they involve six players They have style and don't leave openings" he added If they were to leave an opening Real have in Santillana the man to punish them He has scored eight goals in the competition so far and demonstrated his finishing ability at international level against Eire last week With Uli Stielike and Johnny Metgod they have two foreign players of the highest calibre and will be aiming to win the trophy for the first time Their only other appearance in the final was in 1971 when they lost in a replay to Chelsea Di Stefano had hoped already to have the Spanish League trophy in the
