21-14 By HERMAN HELMS Executive Sports Editor The fellow who argued that statistics are for losers could have won his case Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium Mississippi won the stats battle but lost the war to South Carolina The Gamecocks prevailed 21-14 for these reasons: they played errorless ball while the Rebels blundered and they had George Rogers on their side Rogers is six-foot -two and weighs 210 pounds Powerful and quick the macho type This is for the benefit of members of the Ole Miss defensive team who may not have gotten close enough to the big man to get a good look at him In another banner performance Rogers stormed for 158 yards and one touchdown His stats would have been even more impressive had his best run of the night a 54-yard scoot in the third quarter not been nullified by a penalty Rogers was hot and so were all of the Gamecocks in the early action Carolina punched over touchdowns on its first two possessions took advantage of an Ole Miss error to tack on a third score and led comfortably 21-0 at halftime A two-yard burst by quarterback Garry Harper climaxed an 80-yard drive and produced USC's first touchdown with 5:19 left in the opening quarter A four-yard ramble by Spencer Clark capped a 59-yard march and accounted for second TD with 1:10 gone in the second period An Ole Miss fumble on a Jay Feltz punt gave USC possession at the 37-yard line and led to the third touchdown a one-yard blast by Rogers with 36 seconds remaining in the first half Carolina went to the locker room with a 21-0 intermission bulge and a partisan crowd of 56407 was feeling just fine However the second half which belonged to Ole Miss turned into a near nightmare The Rebels who had fumbled away scoring chances at the USC 11 and 14-yard lines in the first half got their act together after intermission and dominated play Quarterback John Fourcade who completed 19 of 24 passes for 216 yards capped a 43-yard march with a six-yard run for Ole first touchdown with 48 seconds remaining in the third quarter He raced 19 yards for the second touchdown climaxing a drive of 65 yards with 10:02 left in the game Ole Miss rolled up 26 first downs to 15 for the (See USC Duke cheering section Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium That being the case a vendor selling upset stomach remedy could have cleaned up by end The Duke cheering section and the Blue Devils themselves saw enough Orange Saturday to last a lifetime Predictably it came at them on the ground on pitches and dives and gouges and gores Occasionally there was even a pass But only occasionally At that the harried Blue Devils probably got out light Orange-clad Clemson appear terribly excited about the entire affair but nevertheless rang up its fifth triumph of the season in perfunctory fashion 28-10 The Tigers despite the absence of All-Atlantic Coast Conference tailback Lester Brown ground out 323 yards on the ground rushing 78 times to keep the ball offensively for 36 minutes to 24 Freshman Chuck McSwain subbing for Brown led the assault with 120 yards in 18 attempts On the other side of the ledger nationally ranked defense was equally as impressive giving up only a first-quarter field goal and a fourth-period touchdown Both scores however were the result of offensive blunders A fumble by quarterback Billy Lott on the opening play from scrimmage was recovered by Duke's Paul Heinsohn at the Tiger 43 and the Blue Devil partisans among a homecoming crowd of 24600 came to life when Scott McKinney drilled a 33-yard field goal after less than three minutes had elapsed It was a false alarm The Tigers put matters in proper perspective by driving 70 yards in 12 plays eating 4:42 off the clock for their first tally with 1:44 remaining in the opening stanza Clemson 5-1 overall used an interception by Hollis Hall at the Duke 49 to set up a reasonably short match to its second touchdown Freshman Chuck McSwain subbing for the injured Brown at tailback got it from 12 yards out six plays later and the Tigers were on their way Another time-consuming march eating almost six minutes off the clock ended in Tracy one-yard dive to paydirt with just 22 seconds left in the half It was a 16-play affair in which the Tigers converted a pair of fourth-down situations An 80-yard trek on its first possession of the second half gave the Tigers their final TD of the day Perry did the honors a second time again from a yard out capping a 14-play march Freshman Bob Paulling who ousted regular kicker Obed Ariri as the field goal and extra point kicker during practice last week booted all the mistake-plagued Mississippi dressing room mirrored the fact that the victory proved a struggle and the Gamecock players were the first to admit that the win their fifth straight of the season was fortunate to fall their way played like second graders said defensive end Arthur Broussard won but not proud of the way we did Brett Bond other defensive end was even more emphatic: lucky we said the 6-0 220-pound senior must have given up over 500 yards total offense (actually it was only 422 net yards yielded) so we rely on this type of play next week against Notre Dame got to get better got the breaks but we feel like Ole Miss had the best offense we played this had a problem with the quarterback (Mississippi QB John Fourcade hurt USC with his passing of 24 for 216 yards and his running with touchdown scampers of six and II yards)" explained Broussard we have a letdown at the half (USC led 21-0 at intermission) we just lacked consistency Some plays we read okay but we react Defensive backs Pat Bowen and Robert Perlotte teamed up for a key interception late in the game with the Rebels driving for what would have been the tying touchdown Bowen's pickoff gave the Gamecocks the ball for the Crimson Tide but Texas share the same good fortune Down 17-6 early ia the second period Alabama closed the door on offense and swept from behind to trim the Vols 27-17 But Texas trailing 17-7 early in the final quarter could muster only one touchdown and came up short against Arkansas 17-14 Meanwhile fourth-ranked Southern California knocked from the top spot last week received 21 yards
