Skiing Articles Good Pu blicity for Sier ra Bill Berry Describes This Part of As America's Winter Sports Cradle Plenty of publicity is being afforded the High Sierra as the of American this month through the efforts of Bill Berry Reno newspaperman The 1954 American Ski Annual and Skiing Journal offi cial publication of the National Ski Association of America isfeaturing Mr article Timers of the in its 50th anniversary edition The article is profusely illustrated with early day photo and a section is devoted to Holding Company or Industrial Lands Proposed Regional Plans Board Discusses Means to Bring actories What could be done to attract in dustry to Reno was discussed at Regional Planning meeting last night with both Sparks and Reno Chamber of Com merce representatives taking part The group present seemed gen enerally agreed that what is most particularly needed is land The possibility of forming a holding cor poration to purchase industrially suitable land and to make that land available to industrial inter ests at cost was set forth According to the Regional Plan ning staff studies there is a con siderable area of land zoned for in dustrial use in the vicinity of Sparks and Reno which is not be ing developed Prices of this land are generally very high and the property owners largely seem re luctant to part with the land where it is going to be developed for in dustrial purposes Entitled to Protection It was pointed out that in dustrially zonied land is entitled to protection as such even as resi dustrially zoned land is entitled to for residential use against en croachments of other uses Instead of this situation developing here the industrially zoned properties are being used for farming or home sites William Brussard of the Reno Chamber of Commerce set forth the proposal that a cor be formed among the business interests of Reno and Sparks This group would purchase the best industrial locations and then make them available to in dustrial firms Such ment systems have been uti lized successfully in other parts of the United States especially in the South it was stated James Buchanan of Sparks car ried the idea a little farther He suggested that instead of a pri vately controlled corporation a legal authority be set up which would have rights of appraisal and condemnation where such was made necessary Other inducements to industry were suggested Temporary waiver of taxes for new industrial installa tions or even provision of suitable sites free of charge were men tioned Such inducements have re sulted in installation of industry in other cities it was noted Ed Walker of the Reno Chamber of Commerce industry and trans portation committee noted that he receives many inquiries from large eastern firms desirous of establish ing western branch plants which seek to know what inducements Reno will offer them Mr Walker added that he was unable to list any such added attractions All present agreed that an inten sive study setting forth the situa tion in detail is needed before any action maybe taken However they also agreed that such a study should be started immediately Tentative plans were made to establish a working committee to make the study of available lands and enquire into a feasible means of taking action It was understood that this committee will include representatives from Reno and Sparks chambers of commerce the Regional Planning office and pos sibly railroads utility companies and the various political subdi visions in this area Reno Burglar Chooses To Complete Last Day Of Prison
