Carolina, which had been soundly whipped in its three previous encounters with the Mid-American Conference club, stormed into command in the second period and racked up its third straight victory in an impressive manner. And the score could have been worse, much worse, had USC coach Jim Carlen not chosen to employ his reserves throughout most of the final half. Miami, now 1-1, simply could not cope with the Gamecocks' first offensive unit. Ron Bass' pin-point passes completely confounded the Redskins' defenders and Carolina's regulars scored almost at will.

touchdowns came on the Ron Bass All of the Gamecocks' ground, but the air attack opened the flood gates. Vince Dooley, author of 99 triumphs in 14 seasons as Georgia's head football coach, predicted late Saturday afternoon that "I'm gonna be around here a few more years, and I'm gonna win 100 Not for at least another week, however.

Clemson's Tigers had as- perhaps Clemson's first ever in Sanford Stadium. A rain-soaked crowd estimated at 55,100 saw Clemson take a 7-0 lead on Lester Brown's three-yard plunge and Jimmy Russell's conversion kick with 6:24 left in the third quarter. But, after failing to cash five scoring opportunities against a tenacious Tiger defense, Georgia came within a whisker of completing a miraculous comeback. Jeff Pyburn's seven-yard touchdown pass to Ulysses Norris capped a furious, 59-yard, three-play blitz and pulled the Bulldogs within a point with six seconds remaining in the game. Forsaking an almost-certain extra point kick to tie the score, Georgia prepared to attempt a two-point conversion but was penalized five yards to the Clemson eight for delaying the game.

Undaunted, the Bulldogs again went for two points by repeating the play that produced their touchdown. But this time Norris was blanketed by Clemson defenders, and Pyburn under heavy pressure from Clemson's line fired a desperation pass that sailed out of bounds beyond the outstretched arms of his diving target. That Georgia scored at all near the finish was incredible. When the Bulldogs gained possession for the last time, they were 59 yards from paydirt with only 29 seconds to play. But Norris stepped behind the line of scrimmage, took a lateral pass from Pyburn and heaved the soaked pigskin with all his strength.

The ball was up for grabs, but Jesse Murray outleaped three Tiger defenders for a miraculous catch that preserved Georgia's hopes at Clemson's seven-yard line. That set the stage for the Georgia TD two plays later after Clemson defensive end Mark Heniford swatted a Pyburn pass to the soggy turf. Although records prior to 1926 are inconclusive, officials of both schools thought that the win was Clemson's first at Athens in a series which Georgia leads 31-12-3. The victory also evened Clemson's 1977 record at 1-1 following a 21-14 season-opening setback to Maryland's defending Atlantic Coast Conference champions.

Georgia's reigning Southeastern Conference kings won their opener against Oregon, 27-16. On its second possession, Clemson drove 50 yards to Georgia's 27 before Bulldog linebacker Ben Zambiasi dropped Steve Fuller for a 10- yard loss. That forced Obed Ariri to attempt a 54-yard field goal which fell a few feet short. Interceptions by Eddie Geathers and Randy Scott foiled Georgia bids early in the second period and sent Pyburn to the bench for the remainder of the first half. Rick Wyatt recovered a fumbled punt by Georgia's Billy Woods to set up Clemson's scoring drive with 10:23 on the third-quarter clock.

Sparked by Fuller passes of 16 yards to Dwight Clark and 15 to Jerry Butler, the Tigers moved 4 49 yards in 10 plays to score on Brown's three-yard dive and Russell's conversion kick.
