Ohio State Now Leads Both Polls Two weeks ago, way to a 20-17 victory over cost the Sooners the No. 1 ranking in the United Press International Football poll. The Associated Press' voters remained unconvinced, however, and kept Oklahoma at the top of their list. But that changed Tuesday. A week after barely getting by Miami, the Sooners experienced even a closer call, edging Colorado, 21-20.

That lessthan-impressive victory changed almost everybody's The Buckeyes shattered UCLA. 41-20, Saturday for their fourth straight triumph and three of those successes have come against clubs which have been ranked at one time or another. Coach Woody Hayes' club has topped Michigan State (presently 15th), Penn State (now ninth) and UCLA (13th before encountering Ohio State) in addition to North Carolina. Ohio State drew 47 votes for No. 1 in the AP rankings and 37 in the UPI poll.

The Bruins are basically a rushing team behind the power of fullbacks Alonzo Middleton and the outside speed of Wilbur Williams.

The Bearcats employ a great deal of balance, but the passing of Jeff Hipp has been the key to a three B-C victories. "B-C has very good balance, more than teams we have seen," Evans said. "We feel that we have to 'They are a veteran team and they hold their poise well. It's going to be difficult to contain them." Balance is a thing that Evans has been looking for in the Bruins and the passing attack seemed to come around last week in 0-W's impressive victory over Irmo. We hadn't worked much on the passing game until right before the Irmo game," Evans explained.

"I was satisfied with our progress, but we're going to need to throw the ball to make our rushing attack more effective. "We feel that we have a pretty, "But good teams running have game," he proven that you can stop one thing and if we can throw the ball at all, it'll Evans pointed to the Bear- pacity to play without the ball. "Their offense has gotten lot of recognition, but they play exceptional team defense," Evans said. "They always have a lot of people around the ball and their linebackers are very active." The development of the Bruins' rushing attack has come about through the development of the offensive and Evans was quick to give credit where credit is due. Montgomery, our center, has done an exceptional job of Evans said.

"We came into the season with an inexperienced offensive line and all of them played well." Defensively, Evans pointed to play of linebacker Erskine Reed as a factor in the club's success. field. He also leads our club in total tackles and he has many assists." COACHING FOOTBALL is a lot like being an experimental scientist at times. At least that might be the way that Sam Allen of Wade Hampton Academy in Orangeburg sees it. The 1 Rebels won the South Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Class AA crown last year, but the loss of 15 lettermen should have slowed the march somewhat.

Well, it hasn't. Wade Hampton has a 5-0-1 mark and the rest of the pack might be just chasing the Rebels to their second straight state crown. "We don't know how to ex- the potential for a pretty good passing game with Keever Prickett back for his third year and four good receivers. Wannamaker is a pretty good back and Mike Salley, our tight end last year. would be capable player in the backfield." he added.

"'The offensive line has come along well. "The biggest surprise for us has been the play of our defense. We've got about four or five sophomores starting and I didn't expect them to catch on as quickly as they have. "We don't lose very many boys, two off the defense and three off the offense." Allen said. "If they learn any more and get any tougher, it's going to be a pretty good year next season.
