put clamps on North Carolina's vaunted offense as the Gamecocks claimed a 31-23 decision over the Tar Heels Saturday night A Williams-Brice Stadium crowd of 41512 looked on as Bass who has played in the shadow of Jeff Grants for the past two seasons carried the ball a school record 39 times for 211 yards behind superb blocking (JSC amassed 468 yards rushing for their night's work The victory was USC'i second straight after the Gamecocks lost the first five games of the season It was also Marino converted the PAT kick and USC led 31-15 with 9:34 showing North Carolina kept USC off the scoreboard for only the second time of the second half on the next possession and the Tar Heels then surged 96 yards in 12 plays for their final score after freshman Max Runager's punt wai downed at
