Giap, victor of Dien Bien Phu and hero of the Vietnam War, is reported to have drawn up the plans for the brilliant campaign in which Vietnamese forces overran Cambodia in a few days. Who else? He must be well over a hundred by now, but with a first-class military brain still unclouded by time. How would Giap have done against other legendary military commanders Hannibal, Alexander, Julius Caesar, Genghis Wallenstein, Napoleon, Moltke?" We shall never know, though there may be war-games in the purgatory in which ch Giap, for one, does not believe. Incidentally, though concerned about the fate of Pol Pot, I cannot see that the Vietdia is necessaation a bad thing, namese of it does not go any further.

The people Cambodia, whom applied truly made pre-eminent among the 66 wretched of the earth (its own parrot phrase), may even be slightly better off. We should not deluded by. our Western leaders' present flirtation with Communist China into forgetting that the Cambodian Communists, China's creatures, were the first to take Communism to its ultimate and logical conclusion by using a whole nation for a pitiless social and economic experiment. Even Stalin could not achieve that, for all his efforts in the Ukraine. The Georgian monster reigned over a people which was, and still is.

Head of North London Collegiate School, Edgware, years, she was reputed never to forget a pupil's name. BE 1943. Concert Purcell Room Songmakers' Almanac By ALAN BLYTH ONE of the pleasures of the ever more popular Songmakers' Almanac series is the discovery of rarely heard masterpieces. Last night the group's moving spirit, Graham Johnson, had routed out a short piece called merely 66 Gipsy Song," by Busoni, to crown first, half of a long programme entirely devoted to the inspiration derived by poets and composers from gipsies. It deserves to be ranked with the best of Hugo Wolf, whose music it so much resembled. This vital setting of a Goethe text fantasy in a wolfinfested forest calls for just the intensity Richard Jackson brought to it.

The piano part, fiendishly difficult, was given a bravura performance by Mr Johnson himself. After the interval he gave himself an even. more difficult task in Janacek's 66 Diary of One who Vanished," again he met the challenge head-on in giving virile support to Philip Langridge's wholehearted account of the youth who is seduced from calm family life by the wiles and attractions of a gipsy girl. In all but the last song, which calls for a heroic strength Mr Langridge's tenor doesn't possess. he met the fearsome demands of Janacek's impassioned writing.

Ann Murray took the of the girl with seductive timbre. Earlier she coned well with the less rewarding task of interpreting an atmosoheric but rather rambling setting of Ben Jonson's Gipsy Songs by Stephen Dodgson. For the rest it was the more familiar fare of List, Brahms and Dvorak. in whose songs Miriam Bowen was notable for taut, spirited readings.
