26 The Daily Telegraph, Saturday, May 31, 1975 Italian Lawn Tennis Championships RAMIREZ RUNS RIOT AGAINST BORG AS SINGLES 'GO LATIN' By LANCE TINGAY in Rome BJORN BORG, who last year became Italian lawn tennis champion before he was 18 years old, tamely surrendered that title at the Foro Italico yesterday. The Mexican, Raul Ramirez, 21, beat--I could say almost routedthe far from spectacular Swede 6-4, 6-3 in the men's singles quarter-final. As with all Borg's defeats, it was like the inevitable suicide of some Nordic god. He seemed to hurry himself faster and faster to his own destruction, seemingly careless, seemingly tired. It symbolised his conduct of the match that in the second set, where he led twolove, he let his advantage slide away and then, when serving "match last game, put himself point down with a double fault.

last point he lost with a backhand into the bottom of the net, a thoroughly bad shot. Ramirez, by contrast, was efficiency personified -full of bustling attack, keen sharp to create openings if Borg did not carelessly offer them. The four contenders for the title are now Ramirez; the Argentine, Guillermo Vilas; Manuel Orantes of Spain; and the Rumanian, Ilie Nastase, all tough players and all making for a Latin fiesta in this most Latin of championships. Easy for Vilas Vilas had an untroubled quarter-final against the New Zealander. Onny Parun, and SO did Orantes against the American, Harold Solomon.

In neither case was the blood stirred unduly. Nastase provided more excitement in beating Eddie Dibbs, an American diligent, but not normally successful, as Solomon. This was new show court which, after Thursday's huge crowds, had been extemporised at the far end the ground from the Centre Court stadium. Nastase underwent 'firstset problems against Dibbs, especially in the second game. It hardly rivalled that marathon at Surbiton last Monday, but there were 13 deuces, nonetheless and that was points and 14 hectic minutes, with Dibbs at last holding service.

Expected final As expected. the women's singles to a Chris EvertMartina Navratilova final a repeat that which took place a vear ago and a likely forerunner of other notable title matches. If Miss Evert be the woman player in the world, Miss Navratilova' runs her a close second. Last year Miss Evert won the Italian title by beating Miss Navratilova 6-3. 6-3.

and it was rather one sided. It ought to be different this time, for the Czechoslovak girl made herself Miss Evert's most formidable competitor on the lucrative American circuit. Rome details players in capitals MEN'S SINGLES(N. Zealand) A 6-3. 6-1: ThE ORANTES G.

Steadiness not enough Miss of the Jausovec American's found, as so many opponents have found, that steadiness is not enough. Who, after all. can be steadier than Miss Evert, and pack a sting into the bargain? Miss Navratilova, as befits a player with zest, energy and confidence enough to assume that all matches can be won by the volley, encounted rather more danger.

Her semi-final win over the Australian, Dianne Fromholtz, was by 7-6, 6-3. Miss Fromholtz did not show the same confidence in a crisis, or her formidable forehand might have been more exacting. She served in vain for the first set at 5-4, and when she came from 1-3 to lead 4-3 in the tie break the set almost belonged to her. But she saw nothing of the next four points and, with that, her prospects. diminished.

Britons progress Both British: pairs progressed in the women's doubles. Lesley Charles and Sue Mappin easily beat Fiorella Bonicelli and Maria Nasuelli to qualify for a quarterfinal against the Americans. Janet Newberry and Sharon Walsh. To their own surprise, Sue Barker and Glynis Coles hit through the high lobbing of Lea Pericoli and Lucia Bassi, to earn a quarterfinal against Betsy Nagelsen and Julie Anthony. The British girls had checked out of their hotel and were on a London-bound plane; victory brought a welcome change plan.

The First division seemed to have found their level as the leading 10 crews went through with their distances more or less maintained. The only bump was by Worcester on Lincoln who were easy victims when they caught a crab at Donnington Bridge. The Second division again provided more incident with four bumps and a hairbreadth escape for Corpus from Oriel II. Division III Hertford also survived by inches, but Osler House repaired Thursday's omission and climbed again. History made in Division IX when St Hugh's, who were spared after Thursday's pile steamed triumphantly into Magdalen to score Oxford's first girls-on-boys bump.

Among first boats Trinity and despite a blank day yesterday Mansfield are both within sight tie maximum and Regent's Park, could also gain their oars with two earlier bumps and an overclean sweep in the singles Surrey grass court lawn tennis by Patti Hogan at Surbiton yesterday. The volatile American, playing some of her best tennis for a long while, beat Judy Dalton 1-6, 6-2, reach the women's final, where meets Greer Stevens, of South Africa. The men's final is between the Australians, Steve Docherty, and Peter McNamara. With one exreption, Miss Hogan has challenging at Surbiton since 1967. The nearest she came to success was as runner-up to Ann.

She had two points to break for 4-3, but was denied by some fine serving Miss Stevens showed remarkable 'speed about the court for a 6-0, 6-2 win over Judy Connor, the New Zealand No 1. The South African is a greatly improved player since Miss Hogan beat her in the third round last year. Never tried in Douglas THE marathon 10-lap production race which marks the start of the Tourist Trophy races in Isle of Man today is not only the longest but also the most intriguing race ever to be run over the mountain course. The outcome of the event, which in the past has been limited to four laps, is almost impossible to forecast yet it has captured the imagination of the 40,000 spectators who throng the island. Yet there may not be a satisfactory outcome to the race, which has aptly been described as a journey into the The talking, point in countless bars and boarding houses throughout the is island is not who is likely to win, but who, if anyone, will finish this gruelling test of man No one has ever tried to ride a production machine at racing speeds over 377 miles of this punishing circuit, which in the course of only a few laps can play havoc with the workings of a thoroughbred 500. Each machine, ranging from 250cc to has two riders. So there is no doubt that the men will be able to finish the event which lasts for nearly five hours.

But there is a big question mark against the staying powers of the machinery, and the wear and tear, on tyres, brakes, and chains. could well be that the last machine still motoring will be the winner no matter how few laps are completed. I think this may turn out to be the now famous 750cc threecylinder Triumph Trident "Slippery Sam" to be ridden under the Norton-Triumph racing banner by Dave Croxford and Alex George. This machine has won the production race for the past four years but of course it was run over only four laps. laps LAST Classic NIGHT'S 1000: PRACTIC (Yamaha) 100 12mph: 500cc: G.

Clench, the most experienced doubles player in court yesterday, and Lovell, the Oxford captain, partners for the first time, beat Paul Danby and Julian Travis 6-3, 6-1, 6-5. Apart from some lapses in the third set, they combined well. Reiss and Walsh recovered from a set and 2-4 down to overcome Nick Danby and John Ward 4-6, a 6-5, 6-3, 6-3. There were some exciting rallies and a lot of vollying and the winners earned their semi-final place by attacking strenuously all the way. SECOND W.

Britain's championship hopes are on the top three, SO clearly outstanding that their nomination for the team is scarcely debatable, are Belson, Graham Paul and Ted Bourne. The two strongest contenders for fourth place are Ralph Johnson, who was a fine third in Poitiers, and Martin Beevers, Berne quarter-finalist.

For these, the Berlin tournament this weekend may prove decisive. 1 The final test will be on June 7, in Moulins, where a British team, yet to be picked, will fight France. Rowing ARA EIGHT KEEP GOLD IN SIGHT By GEOFFREY PAGE in Mannheim The Amateur Rowing Association national squad make their first Continental appearance this season at the two-day Mannheim Regatta, starting today. The squad crews are reinforced by others nominated by the selection board after recent trials, as well as a few private entries, notably Kingston and Barclays Bank, make a total of 37 British entries out of a massive total of 437 from 12 nations. Main home interest will contre on the performance of the ARA eight, which splits into two coxed fours today, then contends the elite eights tomorrow against five West German crews.

Second here last year, and silver medallists in the world championships at Lucerne, they will be hoping for a win tomorrow to stake a claim for the gold medal at Nottingham. Ken Dwan, despite his recent return to form, will be tested in the single sculls by East Germany's world champion, Hoenig, and the West German champion, Kolbe. TOWNSEND RESCUES ENGLAND By A Special Correspondent in Hardelot, France ENGLAND squeezed through to a semi-final meeting with South Africa by beating Italy 2-1 in the £12,000 Philip Morris International at Hardelot, France, yesterday, but Ireland went out by the same margin to France. Italy's Roberto Bernardini and Alberto Croce coasted to a 5 4 foursomes win over Neil Coles and Peter Townsend, turning four up and fishing five under par. Then when Townsend, battling to get his game in order, went one down at the 15th against Croce in the singles, England's prospects looked grim. Townsend who had turned two up, then lost three of the next six holes to birdies and chipped in for a half another after shanking" into a bunker, escaped when Croce wildly hooked his drive at the 18th. Switch pays off Townsend switched to a 1-iron off the tee holed from feet for a match birdie four.

He hit drive 19th, and a nervous Croce, slicing into trouble from the tee, took four to reach the green and conceded. So with Coles beating Bernardini three and two, the powerful South Africans, Hugh England pore moved through to face Baiocchi and John Fourie, who defeated Spain 2-1. Ireland's Christy O'Connor, jnr, and John O'Leary went down four and two to Frenchmen Jean Garaialde and Bernard Pascassio in the foursomes, but O'Connor kept their hopes alive with a two below par display to beat Pascassio three and two. However, O'Leary, one up with three to play, saw Garaialde punish his weak chip by holing from 10 feet at the 18th for a a birdie and a one-hole victory which earned France a meeting with Australia, 3-0 winners over Belgium. The catches we know about have taken either ragworm or small 1 pieces of lugworm on float tackle. James Carter took five from a mark off the Isle of Wight.

Others have come from Poole, Teignmouth, Southsea, Hastings and Dover. Golden mullet, also known as long-finned mullet, have long pectoral fins and take their name from a small gold spot on the gill covers. They have a liking for rocks and freshwater outlets. So use your float gear around such spots. DRAWER UNIT You couldn't find a more adaptable piece of furniture and just look at the remarkable perfect answer to any storage problem.
