So far salaries have kept pace inflation, but fewer parents with at public schools will be able to afford the constant increase in fees -particularly at day schools. But places will be rapidly snapped up by parents who have been on waiting lists. EARN Parents' problem A father earning £6,000 a year, with one child at a day school charging the average £663, plus extras and fares, could longer afford to send his seoond child to such a school.

By September, fees at boarding schools will be about £1.400 and by this time next vear, £1,750. In order to be able to afford the additional £350 between September and April next near, the father would have to be given a salary increase of £600 a year. If fees rise by 20 per salary increases ranging from 30 per cent. to 40 per cent. would have to be obtained in order merely to stand still financially.
