Sparked by Henderson's 61- yard strike to Brette Simmons, Furman zipped 80 yards in seven plays and narrowed the gap to 13-7 on Mark Stowers' oneyard dive and Bobby Behr's conversion with 8:58 to play. The only other time the Paladins crossed midfield was on their final possession when Henderson's passes to Simmons.

Southard and Mark Grainger led to a first-and-goal at Wofford's four with 2:15 remaining. But a procedure penalty nullified four-yard apparent scoring burst at 2:15, then an offensive interference penalty pushed Furman back to the 24. A 14-yard Henderson pass to Greg Laetsch carried to Wofford's 10 and set the stage for the Henderson-Southard pass which Agee stopped cold to prevent a tie. Furman lost more than just the game. Running back David Kelly suffered a shoulder seperation on his third carry of the night and reportley will miss the remainder of the season.
