m. JANE K.ADS AP WASHINGTON. With the White House whitn tip season setting the pam, Capital society with increasing tempo whirled brilliantly and breathlessly through 1955 like a shining top with virtually no let-up. Even during Lent and the humid dog dnys, evnn when Con- Kress adjourned nnd most officials had left town, the partying continued full-spend. Formality was the keynote.

The engraved invitation, the white tie, ball Rown nnd 18-hut- ton glove; the sit-down dinner followed by musicalr or dancing, tho late-day recrption all ore signs of a new era of sophistication and elegance that ranks our town with the capitals of Europe. The cocktnil party, a Washington institution, along with the groaning to be a way of life however. Even the Russians, whose embassy shindigs in the past have been truly hourgeoise, drawing few of the Capital's top-drawer diplomats and socialites, have gone in for more formal with engraved invitations. Soviet Ambassador and Mrs. Georgi Zaroubin have Riven a series of polite dinners for a carefully chosen guest list.

The official 1955 White House social season actually began in November, 1953, with the first of two diplomatic dinners setting off a series of six state dinners and four huge receptions hosted by President and Mrs. Eisenhower. Whether the new White House social schedule is merely postponed or canceled due to the President's health is still undecided; according to Mrs. Mary Jane McCaffrey, White House social secretary. There is no possibility that Vice President and Mrs.

Nixon will substitute as host and hostess at the White House, though they've officiated in the Chief Executive's place at several state functions for top dignitaries from abroad. Pretty Pat Nixon, who normally has a heavy schedule of social and official duties, will probably continue to take some of the load off Mrs. Eisenhower so that she can be with the President-as much as possible. Mrs. John Foster Dulles, wife of the globe-trotting secretary of state, who has chalked up about 300,000 air-miles accompanying her husband to conferences around the world, is another of the Capital's busiest official hostesses when in town.

She not only presides with her husband at State dinners for visiting VIPs, she entertains for their wives. Moreover, she subs for her busy mate at numerous daytime functions and with him attends dinners three or four times a week. Still among the Capital's top hostesses is the one the Perle Mcsta, who this year purchased a home of her own, a 20-room Normandy- style mansion a stone's throw from the home of Vice President Nixon. So are Mrs. Gwen Cafritz, wife of wealthy realtor Morris Cafritz, who manages to garner and socialites to parties in her modern home, and Mrs.

Marjorie' Merriweather Post, whose divorce this year from Joe Davies, former U. S. Ambassador to Russia, made the headlines and set local society in a tizzy. YWCAPoolToRe-Open The Young Women's Christian Association pool will re-open Thursday at 10 a. to resume classes and dips.

The pool has been closed for cleaning and refilling. Personal Notes Mr. and Mrs. Norvill E. Lathrom of 1813 Main have returned from Orlando, where they spent Christmas with their niece, Mrs.

Janet Merz, and her daughter, Pamela. Henry Fairbanks and Humbert Saffredo of Southbridge, will arrive by plane Monday to visit Richard J. Maguire, son of Mr. and Mrs. 0.

W. Maguire of 813 Logan St. Fairbanks, Saf- fredo and Maguire are leaving Tuesday to resume their studies at Missouri School of Mines. Rolla. They are pledges of Kappa Alpha fraternity.

George C. Golike of West Alton, is a patient in John Cochran Veterans Hospital, St. Louis. today in Alton Memorial Hospl- tal. The baby weighs seven pounds and one ounce.
