(AP) Quarterback Larry Russell scored two touchdowns and directed Wake Forest to a 28-14 football victory over Duke University Saturday to give the Demon Deacons a tie with the losing Blue Devils for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Wake Forest, controlling the ball, scored in each period to overpower Duke with a strong running game.

Larry Hopkins, Ken Garrett and Russell ripped Duke's defenses for big yardage as the Deacons scored their fifth victory against four losses. In ACC play, Wake Forest and Duke are each 4-1. Duke is 5-4 overall. Wake Forest rolled 60 yards for a first period touchdown, Russell scoring from the six. A 21-yard, pass from Russell to Gary Winrow was the big gainer.

The Deacons ran the score to 14-0 in the second period on 56-yard touchdown drive, Garrett going over from the three. The Deacons staged another 56-yard drive in the third period to make the score 21-0. Russell went over from the eight. In the fourth period, Wake Forest drove 80 yards, Garrett scoring from the nine. Quarterback Leo Hart scored Duke's two touchdowns.

He went over from the two in the third quarter to cap a 64-yard drive in 11 plays. In the fourth quarter, he scored from the three to climax an 81-yard march. (AP) Virginia Tech's football defense robbed Villanova blind Saturday, clobbering the Wildcats 34-7 on the strength of five pass interceptions, a blocked punt and two recovered fumbles, with a pair of offensive drives thrown i in for good measure. Perry Tiberio scored the first on a one-yard plunge following a series that i included a 23-yard pass to Jimmy Quinn and a 38- yard run by Tiberio. Quinn scored the next one, a 44-yard pass from Gil Schwabe, to put Tech ahead 14-7. Tracy Lounsbury missed two first half field goal attempts for Wake Forest- for 50 yards and another for 24. The second was partially blocked. Wake Forest ran 44 plays in the first half to only 26 for Duke.

The Blue Devils were in Wake territory only twice in the first half, once at the 13 and later at the 40. After Wake Forest scored its first touchdown, Duke took the kickoff and moved from its 29 to the Deacons' 13. But Hart fumbled and John Phillips recovered on the Wake 24.
