The Mountaineer tailback car ried only 16 times and sat out most of the second half. West Virginia quarterback Mike Sherwood completed 7 of 11 passes for 141 and a touchdown despite a cold, steady rain. West Virginia drove 99 yards for its first touchdown early in the second period. Gresham picked up 40 yards in the drive and plunged off tackle from the 4 for the tally.

With less than two minutes in the first half, the Mountaineers struck again, moving 83 yards in just five plays. Gresham broke off tackle 35 yards and the score. West Virginia took the second half kickoff and required only two plays to score, as Gresham hotfooted off tackle again on a 48-yard sprint. Sunday, November 9, 1969 Bengals' Phillips Puts Prison Life Behind, Eyes Pro Stardom CINCINNATI (AP) A and a half ago the numbers in Jess Phillips' life were the numbers on his prison record.

Now the numbers in Jess Phillips' life are the numbers on the Cincinnati Bengals' statistics sheet. For Jess Phillips, 21-year-old check forger, now is Jess Phillips, 22-year-old yard forager, one of the leading grounder gainers in the American Football League and a leading example for other youths who want to climb back into society after making that first mistake. Phillips did make that first mistake, saw prison life and hated that walled-in world of waste with an intensity that very well may account for his drive in running for daylight. But he drew from that experience the lessons he is applying today, lessons that have made him, in the words of Coach Paul Brown, kid with an engaging personality who has it all in front of him." It includes the hand-made double-breasted maroon suit he wore on the plane back from the Bengals' last road trip; the collection of rings including a red star sapphire, that complement his wardrobe, a career as a po(tential Super-star and a family, wife Julie and their son, Jess III, born on Sept. But past is intricately woven with the future and that is the way Phillips wants it.

"I like to reflect on the past to help avoid problems in the future," he said matter-of-factly as he sat bolt upright in his seat on the plane, a good looking young man with a pencil-thin moustache, bright eyes and a smooth voice that seemed to underscore the words. "Talking about it doesn't bother me. It helped me come out a beter person. Humble. More humble.

All through the years modesty wasn't my strong point. But when you see all the people who helped you, you have to be humble. disappointed Julie, my family my coaches. Now I want to prove to all of them who helped me that it was all worthwhile. I'd really like to show them that I came out a better person and grew up to be a man." (AP)Jack Ford's 77-yard touchdown run with an intercepted pass climaxed a 21-3 victory for Yale over Penn in an Ivy League football game Saturday. Ford's brilliant effort came in the third quarter after he hauled in a Penn aerial, one of Elis' four interceptions in the game. Sophomore wingback Bob Milligan scored Yale's first touchdown late in the first period on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Massey. After a scoreless second period, Yale reached paydirt in the third quarter when halfback Don Martin flashed 20 yards around right end with a pitchout. Injury-riddled Penn was first to score when Elliot Berry kicked a 35-yard field goal.

From then on, Penn was stymied by a persistent Yale defense led by linebackers Ron Kell and captain Andy Toe. The Penn defense held Yale's leading ground gainer, Martin, to 28 yards in 14 rushes. Massey completed 12 of 21 passes for 106 yards. Blue Hose Halt Apps BOONE, N.C. Surprising Presbyterian grabbed an early lead and held off repeated Appalachian State attempts to overcome them as the Blue Hose came away with an 27- 25, upset Carolinas Conference victory here Saturday night.

The victory was only Presbyterian's second of the season. The Blue Hose scored ten points in the second quarter to go in at intermission with a 17-10 margin, then got a touchdown in the third quarter and a field goal in the final quarter to maintain the margin. An Appalachian drive in the final two minutes of play ended with a Hal Queen fumble that rolled out the end zone and was taken by the Blue Hose at their own 20. Arrington's Passing Stuns Indians, 56-21 By RANDY LANEY State Sports Writer NEWBERRY Elon's title-hungry Christians, sparked by the stunning pass combination of Jim Arrington and Richard Mc George, crushed Newberry, 56-21, here Saturday night to claim sole possession of first place in the Carolinas Conference. Arrington connected on 12 of 19 pass attempts for 224 yards and six touchdowns for the evening as the Christians gave Newberry its worst whipping since a 57-0 loss to Tampa in 1936.

Arrington hooked up with McGeorge for three first perio touchdowns, propelling Elon to its fourth league win in as many starts and uping the Christians' overall mark to 4-3. The talented senior quarterback, the conference's leading passer, hit McGeorge, the league's top receiver, on scoring strikes of 18, three and four yards in the first period and Grover Helsley's conversion boots made it 21-0 gefore the second quarter opened. The aspiring Christians, who moved ahead of Lenoir Rhyne (3-0) in the conference standings, were far from finished. Arrington added second-period touchdown passes of 66 and 19 yards to Emory Moore; Marty Bonnett scored 58-yard interception return; and Joe Rinaca added a one-yard plunge before halftime. Elon retired to the dressing room with a whopping, 49-0, advantage.

The helpless Indians, whose record fell to 4-4 and 1-3 in the conference, managed quarter passed scores eight as yard Gary to Welchel Don Garrick and ten yards to Gene Kelly with Joby Castles booting a pair of conversions. Elon continued to roll, however, as Arrington fired yards to McGeorge, swelling the margin to 56-14. Newberry closed the gap slightly on Welchel's two -yard plunge and Castles' conversion boot with only two seconds remaining in the game. Newberry fumbled on the game's first play from scrimmage and the Christians streaked 31 yards in five plays to initiate the scoring with 12:25 left in the first quarter. On its next possession, Elon stormed 60 yards in only seven plays with the ArringtonM George combo clicking again with 8:24 left in the quarter.

Wayne Thrift's interception set Elon up again at the Newberry 28. The Christians scored in five plays for a 21-0 advantage with 4:12 left in the opening quarter. Newberry was held on downs at the Elon 34 to open the second quarter and, on the ensuing play, Arrington flipped a screen pass, to Moore and the shifty halfback darted 66 yards to make it 28-0. Newberry struggled to get back in the ball game before Bonnett intercepted Buddy 6 Hargrove's pass with 12:40 left in the half and sprinted 58 yards to Another interception with that just might be the reason for the mistake he made. The second taste came at Michigan State, where Bubba went to college, followed a year later by Phillips, who played defensive back on a national championship team that also included George Webster, now with the Houston Oilers.

There Phillips met Julie in his sophomore year. There he had his best season in his junior year. There it almost all came apart in his senior year for that's when Phillips put someone else's name on check. "I wasn't trying to get anya, thing I needed." Phillips explained. "It was more of a childish prank than anything.

Stupidity, if you wish. I had played on championship teams and I could have gotten almost anything in town I wanted for nothing." What he got was a sentence of from 18 months to four years in the penitentiary at Jackson, the largest walled prison in the world, and the notoriety that threatened to chase away any pro football team that considered drafting him. gave up hope of getting drafted," Phillips admitted. "I was in prison. I just thought I'd do my time, try to go back to school and make something of myself.

Even if I had not gone to prison, I feel I would have learned my lesson." Renaissance by KUPPENHEIMER Start your own tradition It's the shape of things to come. Renaissance styling. A new awareness of individuality. Of elegance. A new appreciation of shape.

Richmond Defense Stymies Paladins Special To The State offense. During the second half, the Paladins did manage a little more spark, but were still no match for the Spiders who mixed their attack with reserves during the final 30 minutes. It was midway through the first half when Richmond managed its first points and they came when Furman's Ronnie Reed went back to punt, but the snap sailed over his head for a safety at the 9:55 mark. It took the Spiders only three minutes to make the count read 9-0 following the kickoff after the safety, the Spiders took over on their own 47 and marched in for the score. Richards hit Perry on a 15- yarder and then came back with another 15-yard toss to Gillette to put the Spiders at the 12.

Richard stayed on the ground the rest of the way with Buddy Woodle blasting over from the one with 6:53 left in the first quarter. Spiders scored twice in the second period with Richards doing the honors both times on passes. Following a punt to the Richmond 43. Richards dropped back to hit Jim Livesay with a 57-yard scoring strike with 8:50 left in the half. A pass interception set up the Spiders' next score.

The Richmond Spiders proved that defense is just as much a part of their name as their famed explosive offense as they stayed in contention for the Southern Conference crown with a 37-0 victory over the Furman Paladins here Saturday afternoon. While quarterback Charlie Richards was piercing the Paladins' defense with his passing to Walker Gillette and Herman Perry, the Spiders' defense completely throttled the Furman offense.

The Paladins finished the game with only three first downs, minus two yards rushing and 29 yards passing for a total offense of only 27 yards. Meanwhile, the Spiders were rolling up 419 yards with 264 of it coming through the air.) It was during the first half that the Spiders' defense did most of its damage while the offense was rolling up a 23-0 lead. After the first 30 minutes, Furman had only one first down with it coming on a penalty and was limited to a minus 17 yards in total offense. THE BOOT BY GEORGE!
