NASHUA TELEGRAPH. NASHUA. N.H. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1966 Health Pap Test Accurate In Early Cancer Detection Br Joseph G. Molner, M.D.

Dear Dr Jtolncr: I enjoy your column very much but something puzzles me. You wrote that won't show early cancer of the cervix but a Pap smear will." Our doctor says that a Pap tmear Is only a screening device because it does not tell him whether a patient has cancer. If the result is positive, yes, you 60 have cancer. If the result is negative, most women believe that means you do not have cancer. This Is not true.

A patient with a'negative Pap smear could still lve cancer. That Is why our doctor wants a-definite yes or no which be can get only by doing a D. aid C. and a biopsy. Why all this talk of the Pap smear when there is some-thin, even better? Mrs Pap smear is accurate above a level of SO per cent, which Is mighty useful.

The results can come back positive, negative or doubtful. In the case of positive or doubtful, Ihen a biopsy a much more demanding process follows, and you can be certain whether surgery is mandatory. I can thus agree that biopsy gives the most definite answer. However, a D. and C.

(dilation and curetlaje, or scraping) and a biopsy is not the sort of that can be used as routinely the Pap smear. I can hardly see women having this done every six months or year. Can you? Biopsy Is In Order I agree also that a biopsy Is in order whenever any suspicion ot cancer appears. Nevertheless, Hie Pap smear is so sensitive that it commonly detects cancer before there is even the faintest symptom that can be detected in any other way short of a biopsy. Yes, the pap smear is.

essentially a screening device, but it if an excellent one. It is simple, rapid, Inexpensive. If we abandoned the Pap smear and waited for symptoms which would justify a biopsy, the result would be a great many cancers not being found until they had prog- ressed. The Important thing In corn- hatting cancer is fo find it early. The fact that in a small percentage of cases the smear gives a false positive (which Is toon straightened out) or misses an occasional case Js no reason 'Jo sacrifice its benefits the other per cent of the toe.

Dear Dr Molner: My son is'a truck driver and has to rush to a hospital after a bee sting because his throat swells. Is there anything he fan take to munize himself? Mrs C.HA'. Nothing that.he can take by himself, but there are preparations which can be given by a physician (an allergist, if poesi He) to desensitize him, in the same manner that hay fever sufferers can, varym? degrees, be desensitized to ragweed. Dear Dr Molner: I had a cardiogram and my heart beat was perfect but my wave was off. Please explain what is meant by a wave.

Mrs A. C. Certain characteristic parts of the tracing of an electrocardiograph have been labelled and T. The wave represents electrical activity in the ventricles, or lower chambers of the heart. I don't know what might be meant by saying the wave is 'off." It can be distorted by disease of the heart, by the position of the heart, or the use of digitalis.

You will have to ask your physician to explain the significance in relation to other factors in your case. just isn't simple. (AP)-The state Attorney General's office has given final approval to New Hampshire's plan to "buy into" the Medicare program on behalf of 4,000 eldetiy welfare recipients, it wa-s learned Tuesday. The plan authorized Aug. 25 by unanimous vote of Gov. John W. King and the Executive Council met legal requirements, the Attorney General's office told Deputy Secretary of State Edward C.

Kclley. Opinion Issued The opinion was issued'by attorney John T. Pappas and was countersigned by Atty. Gen. George Pappagianis, both of Nashua.

The vote had approved the buying in subject to the opinion of the legality of the. action. Under the program, which will be administered by the Welfare Division of the Department of Health and Welfare, the state will spend an additional $3 a month on behalf of 4,005 welfare recipients aged 65 or older to enroll them in Medicare. In another opinion, attorney Irma A. Matthews told state Librarian Kmile W.

-Allen that "affiliated libraries which have voted to participate in the state library development program may be required to meet certain qualifications to be a part.of this program." The opinion pointed specifically to a section requiring them to "provide Resources and sen-- ices to meet the roost frequent needs of its community." Most of the local libraries in the stale now participate in the WORD'S ORIGIN Origin of the word "boycott" stems from the name of Capt. Charles Boycott, an English land agent in the 1800s, who was so harsh with Irish tenants that they refused to have anything to do with Boycott or his family. LOOK your best! FEEL your best! Some Experts See Booming Business As Demanding Too Much of Economy Jolvi Cunniff By JOHN CUNMJY NEW YORK (AP) The two hottest, things this year have been the weather and the economy, and there is a good chance tha neither cool much until fall.

Temperatures can be forecast closely and measured eiact- Iy. But what happens when a i ton blows coolants the economy? It's not nearly as precise. LBJ Comments Inflation is a pickpocket, President Johnson fays, but a recession resulting from loo much anti-inflation would be a housebreaker. The economy has been booming now for six-years and its fever is measured in the highest interest rates in or 45 years. As some economists view it, the nation is demanding too much from its body, perhaps pushing itself beyond its ability to fulfill its wishes.

Should demand be cooleJ? How? By high interest rates, taxes, less. government spending? And how' should the medicine be measured out when you consider that an overdose could provoke a recession? The burden of slowing demand so far has been on interest rates monetary policy -and much of the banking community is angry. Few people like high interest for long. The banks of course get mare for their money but they pay more. too.

They feel the government should cut spending and perhaps increase taxes. In other words, use fiscal policy as a coolant. Slow To Move The administration, naturally, has been slow to move in this election year. First, there is a dangerous time lag between application of restraints and the time they take effect. Some of Ihe Federal policies of many months ago, for example, are just ncrw cutting into demand.

Secondly, there is much disagreement among the experts on the potential effect of any measure. Proof that the same figures mean different things are the economic predictions of last December, supposedly scientific-ally arrived at and now being revised scientifically. Bank Suggest; Focus on this variety of interpretation came this week from the First National City Bank, the third largest in the nation, which broke ranks with much of the banking fraternity and suggested that perhaps we've been misreading the economic signs. Maybe demand fa not excessive, the bank said. Perhaps inflation can be checked by encouraging productivity growth rather than by ehtrfdng demand too harshly.

"Raising personal income taxes again on top of higher Social Security and state and local taxes would reduce the incentives while whetting demands for higher wages," it said. There is a danger," it cau- tioned, "to over-reacting to increases in widely publicized indexes." Perhaps, it suggested, we should stop bickering over the economic pie and simply bake a bigger one.
