in ww NUXHALL vi BURDETTE THE STATE Columbia Thursday April 7 1960 A HIGH SPOT IN LIFE 3-D By KAY BENSON Of The Sports Staff Lefthander Joe Nuxhall who pitched for the Columbia Reds in 1948 will oppose righthander Lew Burdette of Milwaukee when the Cincinnati Reds and the Braves play a major league exhibition game here at 2 pm today in Capital City Park Nuxhall won nine and tost nine for the Reds last season Burdette World Series hero of 1958 Donald Russell then president of the University of South Carolina which Enright served from 1938 until his death here Wednesday One of the very bright spots In Rex life came when a portrait of him was unveiled about two years ago were his wife Alice and Sharing the moment with HOWARD DODD CROWLEY Hex Enright could walk into any room and better even than a thousand candles brighten every corner of it The door was opened wide for' him everywhere and in his travels North and South East and West he was ever the supersales man the goodwill ambassador for the University of South Carolina that he loved so well There wet the time in Chicago as a shining ex ample It was August of 1947 ana Coach Enright had invited us to be there with him for the annual foot ball gama at Soldier Field between the college allstars and the professional champions On the evening before the game we attended a banquet in the huge ballroom of one of Chicago's famed hotels Among those present were the greats and the neargreats of the coaching profession and other top sports personalities Rex Enright representing the University of South Carolina as athletic director and head coach walked and became the center of attraction The Frank Leahys the Bernie Biermans the Fritz Crislers the Don Faurots and the top men of press and radio saw him smiled and came to greet him Before long he was surrounded by the top men in his profession It was an impressive thing to behold but the thing that impressed this writer more than anything else that evening in Chicago took place later on An unpretentious-looking little man who might have been next to us the least important person in the huge ballroom walked up to South Carolina's Enright and received from him as warm a greeting and as much attention as Rex would bestow upon the King of England or the President of the United States And if you were privileged to have known Rex Enright you would be saying: "That is typical of the South Carolina's Mr Enright packed a heap of living into most of his 59 years but he lived for others more than for -himself He lived for his Sod his family his University of South Carolina and his frienas If the man had any enemies which those such people should never admit it For they would surely be indicting themselves Many of the good things of life were enjoyed by Coach Enright during a lifetime that was too too brief But typical again of this once-in-a-lifetime giant among men he gave so much more than he received Svmpathy sincere deep sympathy to his fine familv And to his good old mother- Mrs Ethel Enright of Rockford Illinois thank you so much Ma'am for bringing into the world and to our little world of South Carolina this great man with stars in his eyes happiness in his heart and the sun in his soul Goodbye Rex with three victories over the Yankees won 21 and tost 15 hi 1959 TOWER BATTLE This game is expected to be a battle" series the two clubs are playing on their1 way bade to their respective hone bases and the Reds will be looking for their first victory Milwaukee won 5-3 in Jacksonville Tuesday night and whipped Gndnnal 3-2 in 12 innings Wednesday afternoon in Jacksonville They'll play at Nashville Friday and at Louisville Saturday and Sunday LINEUPS Both clubs are expected to use what the managers feel will be their starting lineups on opening day Tuesday with the exception of Cincy shortstop Roy McMillan McMillan who played here in 1949 is still nursing a broken nose and probably play until opening day The probable lineup: Bill Bruton center field Red Schoendienst second base Mathews third base Aaron right field Adcock or Frank Torre first base Lee Maye or Ed Haas left field Johnny Logan shortstop Crandall catcher and Burdette The probable lineup: Eddie Kasko third base Vada Pinson center field Bell right field Robinson left field Walls or rookie Gordon Coleman first base Billy Martin second base Bailey catcher Chico Cardenas shortstop and Nuxhall FLAG RACE The Braves along with San Francisco and Los Angeles are favorites in the National League race A good many observers give Cincinnati helped by trades a good chance for the first division Manager Fred Hutchinson figures Cal McLish obtained from Cleveland is the pitcher Cincy needed to get in the first division The clubs were to arrive here bv train at 2 05 this morning They will dress at the Columbia Hotel before reporting to the park at noon Warren Keyes genera manager of the Columbia club said the park gates would open at noon "We expect more than 4000" he said we have made plans to take care of that many Over 1000 general admissions have already been sold and sorry to report that there are only a few box seats left"
