HILL The State's Cfemson CLEMSON Frank Howard says he is getting tired of meeting the opposing coach at mid-field and being told "Clemson played a fine the troth all right" the Tiger coach sighed I'd like to be the one to say that to the other feller once in a while sure played well enough to beat them" he continued in a sad soft-spoken manner "You know it's kinds hard to keep your boys playing when we lose like this but I can say one thing for this they stay in there and battle all the way" Howard who now has taken the short end in four of sue games wasn't in his usual talkative mood yet he did with effort laud Auburn as "a helluva fine football team "Our boys entered this game under tremendous odds" he added they sure came close to pullin' it out "It looks like we Just can't have any hide" Howard frowned that sure gits old when it happens every week It seems we lack Just a little bit of being a pretty good football team" Nicklaus is Fifth In Aussie Tourney SYDNEY (AP)Jack Nicklaus Saturday to bury wiiiless Wake Forest 23-14 in an Atlantic Coast Conference football game The Tar Heels overcame a 14-7 deficit by chalking up 16 points within a two-minute period between the end of the third period and the first minute of the final period In scoring their second straight triumph after four defeats North Carolina pasted hapless Wake Penn Stale Nips Bears BERKELEY Calif (AP) Penn State employed the running of Roger Kochman and the passing of Pete Liske to foil advantage Saturday and made off With 23-21 victory over a stubborn University of California football team that unveiled a new sophomore star Kochman a 209-pound halfback paced one scoring drive and tallied a touchdown Liske who missed only one of his first 15 passes threw one of 10 yards to A1 Gursky for the third Penn State six pointer Still it was the 37-yard field goal by Ron Coates in the second period that proved decisive as Craig Morton threw three touchdown passes for the Bears Morton suffered a knee injury on the first day of fall practice and underwent an operation He appeared in the second quarter Saturday for his first varsity com-' petition Die 19-year-old completed 20 of 28 passes for 274 yards Two were intercepted Morton also rushed for 11 yards and a total offense of 285 two more than the school mark set by Jerry Drew against Oregon State in 1951 of the Maryland-South Carolina outcome So when the dust cleared we unfolded the piece of paper It read: "South Carolina 22 Maryland 16" Bob Jones the long-time Clemson College assistant coach who was scouting the Marylanders had the feeling that this would be the day although he had not seen Marvin machine in action since the 1961 season He came real close to predicting an upset could say he missed it by just 23 seconds when John Hannigan kicked that field goal Carolina" said Jones a good football team They are well coached They seem to know what it is about That (Billy) Gambrell is the best halfback in the conference truly outstanding and the rest of the players make a well-rounded team" Jones Despite the fact that the Gamecocks came so close to upsetting the co-favorites with Duke for the conference championship coach Jones asserted that would rather play Duke than Maryland Duke and Maryland are about even absolutely different but they come out even Duke has the power but Maryland runs from every kind of formation and throw Hie ball from anywhere They present a lot of problems Ted Youngman the Duke University anistant coach also scouting Maryland was impressed and sympathetic with the Gamecocks He was high on Tom Brown the Maryland halfback aa a pass receiver and deep defensive operator can run pass patterns as well as anybody in the conference ana run after he catches the ball He is tough to cover and on defense with his speed there is nothing to keep him from covering from sideline to sideline Billy Gambrell is the best back in the conference though Youngman noted that early fumbles and failure to make a first down by inches in the second quarter kept the Gamecocks from taking a halftime lead to their dressing room Gambrell barely missed a second-quarter first down at the Maryland 27 Carolina had the momentum and had Gambrell got those inches I believe they would have gone on in and scored" he said As to Maryland present a challenge You can move the ball against them but you have to give (quarterback Dick) Shiner a couple of touchdowns and maybe three with those fine receivers" The Gamecocks gave Shiner and those fine receivers only one touchdown and as Marvin Bass pointed out well enough and hard enough to ered on the 21 live plays later Edge tossed to end Bob Lacey for five yards and a touchdown Edge then passed to Lacey for another two-point conversion Wake Forest struck first midway through the opening period behind the passing of sophomore quarterback Ralph Brandewiede The Demon Deacons drove 64 yards in 12 plays with Brande-wiede's aerials accounting for 45 Hannigan field goal attempt noting that it veered to the left as it went through the cross-bars "It was said one "Even the Maryland players laid so Bass shook his head "It was as dose as the ball game" he said know when the kids are going to win one He looked off over the room as the boys slowly climbed out of their sweat-stained uniforms "I feel it worse for them" he said Both Nugent and Bass remarked on the performance of Len Chiaverini Maryland's sophomore halfback The Ambridge Pa youngster carried the hall 33 times for a net yardage of 119 His yardage in the final moments along with 110 yards worth of collections was chiefly responsible for the Gamecock gloom Top running gun for Hie Birds was senior fullback Dick Day who toted for 63 yards in nine tries Billy Gambrell failed to break away during the rugged defensive afternoon netting only 41 yards in 13 carries It was still the third best total of the day Noting that Duke was behind to NC State 7-6 at half time Nugent refused to smite "It would be a great break for us if State heat he said sniffing the sweet smell of mange blossoms "but Duke's great comeback team He clearly has title on his mind CAROLINA TODAY 1:00 FM The last time the Gamecocks came up here to College Park to play Maryland they -were told after they appeared on the field that because of a mixup they would have to change the color of their jerseys Turned out to be boo-boo but the Gamecocks had to borrow some Maryland jerseys and all of this mad ness affected them adversely Then on Saturday the two busses ordered for noon at their hotel in Washington failed to show up Frank Johnson the assistant athletic director who had been assured the busses would be there was frantic When the busses failec to show at 12:20 about 20 players were hustled into cabs for the trip to College Park The busses arrive at 12:25 and arrived at College Park after 1 Washington time The game was scheduled for 2 PM which is an hour later than South Carolina
