Havo you loit your job and ean't find employment? Afraid of getting older? Perhaps a sudden illneaa in the family hae you upaet I Are you and your marriace partner contemplating a divorce or aeparation? Theae are frequent problem In practically every American com' munlty theae daya at one time or another And they are either being aolved alone or they aeem to be hopeleaa situations The Family Serviro Asaociation pretend to know ail the right answera but becauae it trained profeastonal staff has interviewed thousands of individuals with grave worries and complex aituationa they have a very good -batting average bo to apeak in getting you or your family bark on the highway of life The truth is the Family Service Aasociatlon can help Until recently a a Community Chest Red Feather 'agency and now a member of the United Community Services of greater Columbia the Family Service Association under Miss Cora Rowzee executive director keep their doors open their telephones available as they listen patiently and talk calmly to men and women rich and poor the ill the feeble the deeply worried and suggest possible ways to meet the issues of individuals especially when family is involved It will share money raised in this United Fund drive Ministers of religion in Columbia have confidence in Family Service Association and are among the most frequent to suggest a visit to the second floor of the Forsythe Building at 915 Main Street or a phone call there at 2-1919 But most of the time those who need help and advice will write phone or shop by on their own Initiative Perhaps after a few visits all is sunshine and smooth sailing for mother dhd and the kids in-laws too One of the secrets of this' professional private social agency is that they never tell anyone outside the agency about the exact problems- or a specific person or family The confidence you might pass along to the social case worker a lady who is professionally trained under exacting regulations and under high standards confidence la secret So now when you read 'about the following case it Is not necessarily about anyone in Columbia or Cleveland or Atlanta or San Francisco Your problem Is as secure as It would be with your minister or lawyer Miss Rowzee insists She gave an interview the other day in order that the Family Service Association of Columbia established originally in '1816 here might be better known There are no uniforms on the people helped by Family Service no large building provides recreational activities for the many families they have served You see a photograph of a helped family one which was splitting up or over its heels in personal 1 debt Naturally the troubled have pride They wouldn't want our friends and neighbors to hear about these "private Family Service knows This so you must use your imagination as you drive around Columbia and wonder if this small red brick house is still owned by the family with three children because the father and mother wisely asked advice Perhaps only last Tuesday there was a situation like this: Mrs Somebody (not her real name you see) phoned the Family Service Association for an appointment and came to see the family service worker "I am she probably said "My husband seem to take any interest in the family Besides us there is my son Martin now in junior high and little Betty in the third She paused and then continued while the case worker took careful little notes and listened seriously "My husband seldom comes home the troubled mother continued "He give me enough money for me and my children to live on I don't like the idea of a she volunteered "Can this kind of marriage be better than a she said with trembling lips The Family Service Assqglation worker asked some questions and suggested another visit later while she gave careful thought to the problem certainly not a simple one Miss Rowzee related this case a typical one in certain respects but with a few variations She then gave the Familv Service Association solution It went like this "The worker had to get back this mother's confidence In hep-self "She suggested ways to fix up her home She reasoned with her trying to get Mrs Somebody to understand herself why she felt as she did The worker suggested that with simple changes the mother could Improve her personal appearance one of the best ways to get back self-confidence "The worker really helped Miss Rowzee said of the case Not long after both Mrs Somebody's personal appearance nd that -of the home also improved "But another family worker also made arrangements to have some Interviews with the husband the father of the two children This was done at a separate time from the Interviews with the wife Slowly a reconciliation began Mrs Somebody seemed no longer distraught SIk was relaxed One day she asked her husband to let her go out with him He had many outside social obligations which directly tied in with his business and heretofore the wife bad felt she didn't fit into these social activities But as she began to make herself more presentable regain confidence and gain poise he felt better ahout siting her to go out with him" This was the beginning of Vhtfr getting back she Mndalned Miss Rowzeo eald by using two different family workers a reron-SRStau was engineered Bach of Martha and baby Beverly Ann months take refuge from Hurricane Hazel in tha high achool building at Myrtle Beach The hurricane eighth of the season did millions of dollars worth of damage in the Carolines and headed through Virginia (AP Wlrephoto) the two troubled adults gained a better understanding of each other something which usually cornea aponer or later with most couples but In many cases takes time through a thick-and-thin period All family problems are not solved at the Columbia Family Service Association director said "It takes time and confidence on the part of all concerned Miss Rowzee herself a Southerner horn In Front Royal Vs in the famous Blue Ridge Mountain foothills After her schooling there she went to the New York School of Social Work now affiliated with Columbia University where she earned her professional degree Before coming to Columbia Miss Rowzee snent ten years with the Family Service Association of America as a field consultant This was how she learned of the social needs of the South for she traveled extensively in the region In her work Next came eight years with the Cleveland Ohio Welfare Federation How much does it coat to go to Family Service? That Is frequently ssked There are no fees no specific charges Most of the work is given freely The way one may repay for Family Service's calm understanding and helpful suggestions is through helpful cooperation with its aims and by donations through the United Fund this year The Family Service Association is supported and sponsored by the citizens of the Greater Columbia Area through the new United Community Service and the United Fund It is governed by an informed board of directors and staffed by trained social case workers Its fundamental Job is to make family ties strong It works in two ways: By assisting individuals both singly and in families with prob lems of social adjustment and in the relations within the family 2 By improving and promoting conditions in the community which are essential for good family living Frequently each year only about one-third of the families who seek Family Service aid need financial assistance the rest pay their own bills sooner or later The social agency is a member of Family Service Association of America the United Community Services the National Conference of Social Work and the South Carolina Conference of Social Work Mrs Cadwallader Jones Is president Charlie Cate Jr Is vice president and Nixon is' treasurer Members of the hoard of directors are Maurice Alcorn Mrs Etchison A Flora the Rev Clyde Helms Jules Lindau III Mrs Frank Maher Mrs William Michelsen John A Montgomery the Rev Kenneth Morris John Seibels Frank Taylor Dr Frances Timmons Ashly Tobias III and Arthur Williams Jr Miss Rowzee concluding the interview reminded said: "The Family Service worker PIERLKSS OCEAN PLAZA: This picture shows the Ocean Plaza Hotel la an air view taken from shove the waves In a helicopter Beside the Myrtle Beach building la tha smashed pier one of aeveral smashed Friday by Hurricane Hasel (Shaw Air Force Base Air Force Photo) jected merger They also agreed to put aside organizing rivalries for the time Leaders said no Individual union would be forced to surrender part of its-current membership to another under proposed merger terms Meaney and Reuther talked of results within a lew months Separate AFL and GO conventions would have to ratify the constitution worked out by subcommittees then a joint assembly would put it into effect Notably absent from the merger talks was John Lewis who played a major role in forming the CIO years ago His United Mine Workers is now independent and he wasn't invited to the session yesterday The UMW Journal derided the meeting in an editorial in its latest issue entitled "That Smelly Old Peace Pipe In 1953 the auto industry consumed organic chemicals valued at 590 million dollars MYRTLE BEACH DESTRUCTION: This was an amusement park across from the Myrtle Beach Pavilion before Hurrleane Basel struck Friday In the rear Is a Myrtle Beaeh the water tank (Shaw Air Force Base Photo) Result A along the north end n( Myrtle Bazel Mndations hy wind and waves from hnrrirana Basel Damage in the Carolines was in the millions jgp wtrephntn) HOMER LAND IN CREEK: Shown above a re two house which were washed off tha front beach near Island Friday morning and which floated to renting places In tha creek which separates the Island from the mainland (Munn-Teal Phofo).
