That is the $64 question in areas where a UHF station is preparing to go on the air as it is in Columbia where WCOS-TV is beginning its broadcasts Because of word-of-mouth rumors being circulated in cities planning UHF stations considerable confusion exists among the public regarding the system and its merits according to Joe Marty Jr general manager of electronics division for Admiral Corporation "Not since the fast growth of television right after the war have we run into so many conflicting many of them completely unfounded" Marty said "The result is the public doesn't know whether UHF is desirable or In answer to the question "What is UHF?" 1714 MAIN ST 806 HARDEN ST 235Z7 Ss mm COMING INTO mmi shows TV studios demand great height from the floor to the ceiling Lights must be hung scenery mounted and other accessories installed in such a manner than thera is still plenty of head room for floor lights and long mike booms The quonset studio at WCOS-TV offers over 20 feet of height for these purposes The studio is 40 feet long and 25 feet wide The 40 foot dimension runs across the building The studio can be expanded by simply adding another aectlon to the quonset The entire building now measures 40x80 feet In the area above the office ceiling there are several hundred square feet of atorage space created by the shape of the quonset Storage space is vital to a TV building The flnt regular operation of South Carolina television station will begin at 5:30 this afternoon when WCOS-TV of Columbia goes on the air Opening ceremonies will be very Informal station officials announce nd will consist largely of congratulations from local officials and introductions of members of the staff An open house at the station has been set for Sunday afternoon The public la invited WCOS-TV is owned and operated by Radio Columbia which has operated Radio Station WCOS for some seven years WCOS-TV applied for Channel 25 and for a power some 70000 watts when the Federal Communications Commiasion first lifted the freeze on TV channel allocations Upon advice from manufacturers that a transmitter of this power would be unavailable for ome time it was decided to operate temporarily with a transmitter of a lower power which delivers about 17000 watts The construction permit was granted to by the FCC last fall Construction was begun shortly thereafter The transmitter the first to be delivered to a station in South Carolina arrived in Columbia on March 20 The test pattern was telecast beginning April 23 During this test operation reports of good reception have been received from Sumter Orangeburg Camden Winnsboro Newberry and other points within the approximately 40 to 50 miles radius by the signal Radio Columbia is headed by CL Pittman president TV operations are headed by Stewart Spencer Robert Lambert Jr is technical director tar both the radio and TV station In the commercial department Dixon Harp has returned from his Army service to his old position of commerical manager for radio Wayne Poucher formerly sport director of WCOS has been appointed commercial manager for WCOS-TV Law Epps is national sales manager for both stations Art Haynes has been appointed production manager for WCOS-TV and John Ropp has succeeded Stewart Spencer as program manager of WCOS Beyond the department The film library is equipped with a 16 mm projector for auditions and screening Originally the operating hours will be from 6 to midnight with the exception of opening day which will get underway at 5:30 This schedule will expand later to provide daytime programming Among the network shows scheduled are the "Groucho Marx Show" the "Comedy "TV the "Dennis Day Show" "The Life of Riley" and "The Hit Parade" WCOS-TV will alio have a hearty sports schedule Including fights on Tuesday wrestling on Wednesday and fights on Saturday Local live show will Include the "TV Sports Page" each evening at 6:45 and a weatherman program at 7:25 and II Extensive plans art being made to serve the civic organizations and churches of Columbia but in order to bring TV to Columbia as soon as possible it has been decided to begin operations without waiting until plans for these shows- can be completed Most evenings will have a feature length Hollywood movie Other film shows will Include the American Barn Dance" a novelty feature "Heart of the City" a mystery drams and others A native Columbian Robert Lambert Jr technical director has been with WCOS since 19415 He is a graduate of Columbia High School and has a BS Degree in electrical engineering from the University of South Carolina From 1940 to 1943 he was with the engineering department Field Division of the Federal Communications Commission and from 1943 to 1946 he served as electronics officer with the Navy He was released to Inactive duty with the HOME DEMONSTRATIONS GREAT MUSIC and OPERAS BIG-NAME FIGHTERS TOP COMEDIANS -and you can see them better on the exciting new WITH i ALL-CHANNEL RECEPTION BUILT IN NOW! 'Washington director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People asked today that Congress write into the Taft-Hartley Law a ban unreasonable discrimination based on race" Testifying before the Senate Labor Committee he proposed an amendment to the law making it an unfair labor practice for an employer or labor union "to discriminate against or segregate any member of the labor organization or any member of the craft or class of employees with spect to referrals for hiring firing upgrading promotions layoffs" and other "purposes of the Mitchell said "only a few unions have outright prohibitions against ths admission of colored mem bers" but that "many of then exclude colored members In certain localities as a matter of practice" Sen Ives (R-NY) commented that such an amendment would "go two-thirds toward total victory" in protecting employment rights for all American citizens Another witness was William Jackman president of the Investors League Inc of New York He asked the committee to ban all forms of "compulsory union membership" prevent the checkoff of union dues strengthen the present Injunction provisions and outlaw all secondary boycotts Sen Neely (D-WVa) asserted that Jackman was "slandering1 labor and demanded: sent you over here?
