brushing up on certain points of how to play football could have done worse than adjourn to Melton field last night for the Columbia-Raleigh high school game That Is of course provided he didn't mind the cold or had on his long red flannels The wind whistled through what few interstices there were in the stands between the tightly packed spectators in a manner suggestive of icicles hanging from the old water tank Overhead ducks quacked geese honked and bluebirds winging their way southward to warmer dimes Teeth chattered and noses blushed crimson and the gladiators got along less swimmingly than is customary in gridiron dashes The cry of hiss drinks" went unanswered to such an extent they scent out and got hot chocolates But there didn't seem to be many customers for them either The game was too hot 7 to 6 Some bold spirit must have drunk a beer and tossed the bottle In the walkway Twenty -one people rolled on it befoid some young chap kicked it out if the way Raleigh gave a demonstration of how to win football games with the toe by punching their try for goal right through the uprights and practically down the throat of the second loud speaker from the middle one some 29 feet from the ground The boot would have been good from 39 yards out in the field Columbia came dose to snatching the game in the last moments A long heave into the end sone trickled from the receiver's fingers But it was a good game no matter who look it The game set some sort of a record In that not a penalty was Imposed until the gsme was spent except the last four minutes Then Columbia took a 15 yard setback for holding Most of the fireworks broke loose In the first half when young Raymond Owens flashy quarterback gave a demonstration of how to use the stiff-arm which numbers of college players might have been Interested to observe Ripping through the left side of his line In the first quarter the youth was beset by a tackier He gave him that arm and the resulting jolt had the effect of a rubber ball bouncing off a brick walL Columbia seemed on the verge of scoring in the same quarter when Owens picked an opening over tackle and was well on his way when one of those unusual and unfortunate accidents occurred At least that's the way it looked from our emergency ringside seat One of his blockers went to cross beliind him to take out a defensive half Their feet touched and the runner lost his stride enabling a Raleigh tackier to overtake him Some good lessons in tackling might well have been gleaned from thl jpilay of these youngsters Time and again they got their men in such fashion as to lift him clear of the ground and take him into sudden reverse One Columbia boy was seen to be knocked down twice and still he got up and made the tackle Nor was all the interest centered in the high school players Between the halves the midgets came on and put on their fancy stuff which many declared to he more entertaining than the real thing There were laterals forward one at least and hug-me-tight that also worked But the outstanding sensation of this affair was the running of one of the little gray-shirt backs He changed pace picked his holes side-stepped cut in and directerf his blockers in a fashion that would do credit to any college player He must have been all of ten years old He likewise had that knack of shaking them off with a shrug and bursting ahead for long gains after it seemed he was downjbehind the line of scrimmage There was one boy on hand with a water bucket fastened to his belt Unmindful of this supposed Impediment he wrestled with his fellows tackled fell on the bail and all the rest of and the bucket seemed to survive the entire ordeal It also appears that others were interested in the contest The stands on both sides were practically filled and enough extras stood about the end cone and sat on the ground "down In front" to fill them up and then some And for many minutes after the game had started they kept
