Had not the Town theater given them 17 seasons of real dramatic pleasure? Had not Mr Rood proved through practical demonstration his ability to direct? Did not Columbians expect to see in hia work tho growth that had bean hia during his absence in other fields? And was not "Grand a great play of intense interest and ona to test the capabilities of any theatrical group both as to acting and mechanics? With such a setting it was no easy matter to please no matter how sympathetic the heart-beats of thoM who were to see the show But please it did and in such a big way that there should not be a vacant seat for tho other three matinee and night today and night tomorrow On he stage and on the screen "Grand was several years ago established as a real play It's not lot of careful characterization as some might have sized it up nor a shallow recital of things that happened to a group of people quartered in the same hotel in Berlin but a serious study that requires understanding direction and finesse in acting And last night's enactment was the first time the play has been dons off the professional stage which added another distinctive note to the event To meet the complicated mechanics revolving set was built on the Town theater's not-any-too-large stage It worked well and enabled the evening to move with a saving of time and a precision that would not have been possible otherwise Mabel Bradley Kalmakoff had the role of the dancer and as those familiar with the play know it is no easy part It will be recalled that Garbo did it in the screen version and those who saw Mrs Kalmakoff last evening commented on tho marked way in which the Columbian followed Greta's interpretation her tonai inflections and mannerisms being decidedly similar to those of the film favorite The dancer's lover Baron von Gaigam the jewell thief was ably portrayed by John Sholenberger who carried successfully this difficult part Prof Kershaw Walsh as Krinqe-lein who had but two weeks to live and set out to enjoy every minute of that time turned in an expert performance that drew along with that of Mrs Kalmakoff tho warmest ap-platiM of tlie evening The cast was so large that it is impossible to mention ail However it slinuld he said that Dutrow as Meierheim Charles Mercer as Preysing and Miss Marie Elizaheth Brooks as Flarmmrhen did exceptionally well while Miss Ilse Marx herself only a few weeks from Germany was able to make of maid's rote one of the play's most finished characterizations Others in the cast all of whom turned in creditable performances were: Miss Beatrice Milter Bernard Farter Ingram Blanding Alva Campbell Jack Flynn Dr Kirkpatrick Robert Fripp Roy Rich Daniel Millsap Iiennig Cohen Sirs Reginald Kramer John Crews Sr With a light scrimmage and a passing and punting drill yesterday afternoon Columbia high put the finishing touches to its preparations for the Richmond academy game Saturday and Coach Rheme announced his charges ready Limbering up exercises and a blackboard talk will wind up the work today The regulars if th Capitals are being hard pushed in several spots by the reserves and Coach Rhame has intimated the possibility of several new faces appearing in the lineup when the opening whistle blows The game Saturday scheduled for 3 o'clock will be the first afternoon appearance of the season for the Capa in home territory all previous games being played under the lights A large crowd is expected and the usual prices 75 and 50 cents will prevail anderson!
