sf i IP 41 4 fll Thursday May 16 1985-THE DESERT SUN Palm Springs Calif All I iii Vehicles: Risk involved in use Three years later Bighorn sheep returns to wild lem is that various portions of the land are owned by private individuals the Bureau of Land Manage ment and Southern Pacific Rail PALM DESERT D-Day the tiny bighorn lamb that was near death when it was rescued by the Bighorn Research Institute in June 1982 has been returned to the wild now a healthy three-year-old weighing more than 200 pounds The rescue of D-Day drew national interest in the plight of the dwindling population of local bighorn sheep and also marked the first time that the California Department of Fish and Game had allowed any group to remove one of the rare peninsular bighorn sheep from its natural habitat way the guy who owns the land can make the rules We have too much of a problem if people have signed authorizations from the property owners to ride on the Robinson said Sheriffs Sgt Steve Hadley said his department keep statistics on accidents around Windy Point As for law enforcement Hadley said the Sheriffs Department has a couple of ATGs for "plainclothes deputies to use while patrolling Windy Point (CoBtiBKd from Page A-9) nore than any county in the state Ms Raspino added Since the vehicles intended 'for use on streets off-road drivers can be any age and need a driver's license she said California Highway Patrol offi- cer Tom Granger a spokesman for the Indio office said he has seen i children as young as five years old driving all-terrain motorcycles He said the CHP recently handled an off-road fatality involving a 13-year-old La Quinta boy The CHP investigates about three such serious accidents per month 'Granger added There are few statistics on offroad accidents The outlying desert areas frequented by off-road riders often fall in the gray area between law enforcement jurisdictions The CHPs primary function is to enforce state laws and prevent accidents on not alongside highways In the Windy Point area CHP officers issue citations and have tow trucks remove illegally parked cars along Highway 111 But they patrol the dunes Portions of the Windy Point area are under the jurisdiction of either Palm Springs Police or the Riverside County Department in Indio Detective Robinson said police primarily respond to accidents rather than enforce laws there Part of the law enforcement prob one of our officers dumped an ATC twice and hurt his Hadley said He said deputies frequently search for and rescue people stranded after their vehicles bog down in the sand The release of the mature ram came quietly on the morning of May 2 A crew from the Bighorn Research Institute took D-Day blindfolded to Magnesia Spring in the hills above Thunderbird Heights and Magnesia Falls in Rancho Mirage where he was set free The ram immediately made a dash for the sides capering up the rocks away from his former captors Prior to his release D-Day was given an ear tag and a radio collar important aids in tracking sheep and monitoring sheep survival D-Day finally running free was a very dramatic moment for all of us from the Bighorn Research according to James DeForge executive director and research biologist The North Palm Springs station of the California Department of ForestryRiverside County Fire Department responds to accidents at Windy Point apparatus engineer Jeff Millar said showing the classic symptoms of a lamb dying of pneumonia DeForge recalls that the young bighorn was showing such symptoms as lack of energy droopy ears excessive thirst and coughing Realizing he did not have long to live DDay was captured so the Institute could try to save the lamb and also to isolate the particular virus which was killing most of the young lambs in the bighorn population Using a helicopter and triangular net DDay was finally caught unharmed whereupon be received immediate care from Dr Charles Jenner a veterinarian who was the founding president of the Bighorn Research Institute Soon he was airlifted to the desert floor where he was given emergency treat-' ment DDay was initially given antibiotics and intravenous fluids then was later transferred to the Jennings Center toe Zoological Medicine at the San Diego Zoo Their virologists collaborating with the Bighorn Research Institute attempted to isolate the virus which almost had taken the life' Fully recovered DDay eventually was to father four baby bighorns of his own before his return to the wild last week plight and recovery were the catalyst for greater public interest in the vanishing local bighorn herds Through the success-pi the treatment the Bighorn Research Institute has continued to receive permits to capture bighorn lambs for study and eventual treatment nursing them back to health with the goal of returning them to their natural habitat The Bighorn Research Institute has a 300-acre facility on Highway 74 above Palm Desert The goal is to safeguard the bighorn population from extinction and to research the viruses which are especially taking their toll oq the young lambs Originally formed to protect the local bighorns the Institute is now involved in research in seven states and Mexico information which is important in determining if diseases are common to herds thousands of miles apart RETURN TO WILD D-Day a bighorn lamb rescued from death nearly three years mo by the Bighorn Research Institute was returned to the wild May 2 Now a healthy three-year-old D-Day stood majestjcally on the rocky hillside after his release before scampering away to the Magnesia Spring area of Rancho Mirage weekends we get very busy there Sometimes we are called to Windy Point up to four times a Millar said half the accidents are serious The majority of injuries are to feet ankles and legs" Skin cancer rate doubles in 10 years By MALCOLM RITTER AP Sr trace Writer meant so much to us not only because he was our first lamb but he represents hope for saving the bighorns There used to be an old axiom among wildlife experts that sick bighorn is a dead proven that saying wrong not only with D-Day but with many other sick bighorn in the last three years" sentiments were echoed by Richard McClung president of the Institute all v'ry happy and proud that D-Day was the first bighorn to be released to the wild" McClung said learned a lot from him and the rest of the sick lambs that have followed Now time for him to go When D-Day was captured on June 6 (hence his name) he was before it spreads to other parts of the body such as the brain bone liver and lung said Dr Darrell Rigel co-director of the pigmented lesions section of the skin and cancer unit at the New York University Medical Center Early melanoma usually can be removed under local anesthesia he said Rigel co-author of an article on melanoma detection in this month's edition of the cancer journal Ca said people should completely examine their skin monthly and have a doctor do that examination annually Both exams should start by age 21 he said For the self-examination the person should use a full-length mirror and a hand-held mirror to make the entire body visible 1970 to 102 cases in 1981 among men said Dr Arthur Holleb the senior vice president for medical affairs Melanoma remains much less common than other cancers Some 144000 cases of lung cancer and 119000 cases of breast cancer are expected this year for example The main reason for melanoma's increase the society says is increased exposure to the sun which can lead to various skin cancers many years later The society recommends avoiding the sun between 10 am and 3 pm when ultraviolet rays are strongest and using protective clothing and sunscreen preparations Holleb said melanoma is curable if found early enough The idea is to remove the cancer NEW YORK (AP) The American quest tor a suntan has helped double the rate of a deadly skin cancer in the past 10 years but the disease is curable if its multi-hued irregular blotch on the skin is found early enough the American Cancer Society says Malignant melanoma which is expected to develop in about 22000 Americans and kill 5500 people this year has risen at a faster rate than any other cancer except lung cancer the society said Expressed in cases per 100000 population melanoma rose from 41 cases in 1970 to 88 cases in 1981 among women and 43
