Fair To Offer Free Shows jaoteskuffl Aeai,ster-M Thursday, Aug. 2, 1973 7- smtHavmLD f in. (upi) Aglin this year, the official wwjttoo* the pmk State Fair it "Come Smile With Us." But no pri*.winning steers need apply* One of the many changes at this year's fair, which starts Aug. 10, is a mandatory slaughter provision in the steer contest. That means the top two finishers automatically will take a trip to the butcher not a prospect to encourage mirth an their part. But the steer show is only one aspect of the wide-ranging lair — a IMay extravaganza 'which will see everything from boccie ball and horseshoe pitching tournamenU to free big- name entertainment at the grandstand. For the second straight year, the fair is allowing free admission to the grandstand as part of the general admission price to the grounds. That means $1.50 (50 cents for children and senior citizens) will allow fairgoers to see such entertainment names as'the 5th Dimension, the Charley Pride Show, and Grand Ole Opry, Loggins and Messina and the RCA Rodeo with Bobby Goldsboro. Auto Racing Extra The last two days of the fair feature, at extra cost, stock and championship auto racing on the grandstand's dirt track. And again, the 1973 version of the August classic will present a harness racing card billed as the richest nonbetting lineup in the world. Purses this year for the sulky - drawing steeds total more than $500,000 and the fair management promises a look at "the largest, fastest and most prestigious horses in the world" during the first six days of the fair. The horse races also are free with fair admission. Another big fair attraction is the midway, which this year will present 67 rides and shows and will feature, according "to fair officials, reduced prices. In addition' to old standbys such as the Swiss Bobs, Sky Diver and Italian Auto Scooter, the midway will include two new attractions — the German Hoff- brau House and the Center-of- the-Earth ride. Goeding's Million-Dollar Midway will provide the carnival for the 1973 fair. Other attractions and competitions stretch from well before the ribbon-cutting Aug. 10 to the end of the fair on Aug. 19. Included are such events as a competitive ham and bacon show; a baby pageant; a longest pony tail contest; a kitchen band competition; the annual itractor pull, moved this year to the main grandstand; accordion,! baton, school music and high school stage band contests; a floriculture show, and a new coon dog water race with an $850 prize to the fastest coon dog. For the kitchen artists, the fair presents a pork cook-out contest, with a trip to has Vegas as top prize, and a blue ribbon bake-off, for which the finalists already have been chosen. The "largest livestock show in the nation, including those doomed steers, may draw increased interest in direct proportion to climbing meat prices. In addition to the steers, the fair's roster of competition in-! eludes dairy cattle, swine,' sheep, goats and dairy goats, with special contests for junior showmen and Illinois-bred animals. But, even with climbing prices, it may be hardto beat the $10,000 paid for the grand champion steer last year and the $8,400 paid for the' grand champion barrow. Both prices were easy record-setters and are not likely to be equalled this year. Aside from bettering those sale prices — which is mostly a matter of prestige — the fair still is faced with a continuing deficit of some $1 million. Manager Bob Park had hoped' to shave some $200,000 off that figure last year during his first year as manager but was balked by what he later termed "lax ticket takers" who allegedly let thousands of fairgoers into the grounds free, and the seemingly perennial "no-so-fair" weather—hot, muggy and generally unbearable. Park is working on the ticket taking problem. About the weather, ail he can do is hope. O.T. johnion Co., Gotobure't Groofoif Sfero S/net 1662/ Shop O.T.'s 10 TO 9 FRIDAY & MONDAY.
