It was a nightmare in broad daylight. The defending IVC South Division champion Indians were beaten 21-6 by Glendale College before a modest gathering that saw eight SBVC pitchers get shelled for 21 hits in a 3tt-hour contest. It was the Indians' second consecutive loss (both at home) leaving them with a 4-4 overall record and a desire not to let the dry spell get them down. "We just can't lose our confidence," said SBVC coach Stan Sanchez. "We're going through a bad time right now.

We're getting bad hops we make a good pitch, they make a good hit. This is a nightmare. It's the worst I've been through. "You have to go out the next day, put your pants on and hope that you can work it out." Said SBVC right fielder Jim Loughran, "You've just gotta come out tommorrow and work harder. We just aren't playing well as a team.

We're inconsistent on the hill and defensively. We're not getting the timely hitting. There's three areas you need to win: pitching, hitting and defense and we're not getting any of the three. But we'll be back." For sure, one of SBVC's key foes Glendale coach Steve Coots thinks the Indians will break the early-season dry spell. "Hey, that happens to everybody," said Coots, whose team improved to 6-1 overall.

"There's no way that we're that much better than they are. They (the Indians) have a fine ballclub and they'll probably win their division." Loughran provided one of the few SBVC highlights of the day with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning that made it a 9-2 ball-game. Left fielder Harry Davis went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored while first baseman Mike Rossano was 2-f or-3 with a double. Second baseman Mike Baker scored two runs and was l-for-3 for SBVC. That was the best SBVC could do against winning pitcher Mark Elser, who had a 90 cushion by the fourth inning and scattered four harmless runs on seven hits in seven innings of work while striking out two and walking three.

Glendale first baseman Tim Pawley led the Va-queros' charge with a 5-f or-6 effort a two-run homer in the first inning, a double and three singles in his first five at-bats for three RBI. Pawley also scored four runs, as did left fielder Darryl Robinson (2-for4). Glendale designated hitter Carl Butera and right fielder Mark Sterling each had three RBI for their team. Starter Pat Wolf suffered the loss, giving up nine runs on eight hits in 3 innings of work. The game escaped Wolf and the Indians, who have allowed 70 runs in eight games, in the fourth inning when Glendale exploded for five runs to take a lead.

The rally was fueled by RBI singles by Pawley and center fielder Jason Wells. Sport in brief Ueberroth rallies his troops Associated Press LOS ANGELES -Peter V. Ueberroth met with his entire Olympic staff on Tuesday and said his decision to become baseball commissioner should be a "morale boost" for them all. Ueberroth, president of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee, was named to the baseball post on Saturday. He told all 1,200 members of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee that his move should be viewed as an example of how their experience can lead to better jobs after the 1984 Games.

Ueberroth took that message to groups of 200 to 300 workers at a time in a series of what he called "rallies" staged in different parts of the Olympic headquarters in Culver City. Olympics lawsuit LOS ANGELES -American Civil Liberties Union attorneys requested a preliminary injunc-tion and a default judgment Tuesday in the lawsuit filed on behalf of women runners who want two long-distance races added to this summer's Olympic events. The injunction would compel the federal court to immediately add the races to the Summer Olympics. BRIEFLY NOTED: Four Atlanta pitchers scattered four bits and the Braves scored an unearned run in the seventh inning to edge the Dodgers 1-0 Tuesday in Los Angeles first 1984 exhibition baseball game. Unheralded Robert Zoller of Austria captured a World Cup slalom ski race Tuesday on Vail Mountain in Colorado, beating favorites Ingemar Stenmark and Pail Mahre.

The United States Football League's next stage of expansion will bring a second professional football team to Miami as early as 1985, USFL commissioner Chet Sim- (against Yucaipa). The rest were curves and changeups." Yucaipa managed two ground balls against Abril, and one apparent base hit a looper that hit the line behind first base. But the "hit" turned into a fielder's choice when a Yucaipa 1 he picked it up, our guy was two-thirds of the way to first. He still gunned him out by three feet. I thought, 'Geez, this guy must have a pretty good "We found out in the second game." Abril's older brother, Manuel "Moochie" Abril played for the Yellowjackets, as did his father, Manuel Sr.

The elder Abril played outfield for six years in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in the 50s, said Odie. Though Colton lost several key members of the 1983 4A runnerup team to graduation, a solid nucleus returns, including first baseman Mike Todd, second baseman Sandy Torres, right fielder Rick Housley, Contreras and Abril. "Our goal is to win the CBL and go to the CIF championships and win this time," said Abril. "We're not holding back." Other nominations Debbie Arnold of Fontana High School, who scored 16 points to lead the Steelers to the CIF 3A championship over Foothill in the L.A. Sports Arena.

She was prep of the week just three weeks ago. Eddie Shepbard of San Bernardino HS, who won five of seven bouts to finish fifth at the State wrestling tournament in San Jose. Shephard wrestled at 154 pounds. His finish was the best among county wrestlers. Junior guard Nicki Cole of Twentynine Palms, who scored 12 points as the Wildkit-tens fell 47-42 in a CIF girls basketball semifinal game to eventual CIF Small Schools titlist Maricopa.

By PAUL OBERJUERGE Sun Sports Editor It's a baseball axiom that pitchers are ahead of hitters in the spring, but Odie Abril is stretching the point. Abril pitched a no-hitter and struck out 19 of a possible 21 batters last Wednesday as Colton defeated Yucaipa, 7-0. For his masterful performance, the senior right-hander is The Sun-San Bernardino County prep athlete of the week. "I'd say he was throwing his fastball 85 miles an hour," said Yucaipa coach Jeff Stout. "How fast is that? If you get a guy in high school in the 80s, you're licking your chops and the scouts start coming around.

"They'll definitely be around this kid. He's big and he throws real hard. Seeing him on our first night, and under the lights, was a pretty tough assignment." Abril (6-2, 175) played third base last season and batted .288 for a Colton team that tied Eisenhower for the Citrus Belt League title and reached the championship game in the CIF 4A tournament. He began pitching only last summer, while playing American Legion ball for former Colton coach Spud O'Neal. "It was mainly O'Neal's idea for me to pitch," said Abril, 17.

"He'd seen me throw some and I told him I could do it." Now, Abril is the No.l starter for the 1984 Yellowjackets, 2-0 after sweeping a doubleheader vs. perennially solid Yucaipa. "I'm just a power pitcher," he said. "I guess I threw about 70 percent fastballs uaie "Din was sjow leavfog prep of week the bag and got forced at second. Abril's only other close call came when Dave McClure rapped a sharp grounder that Colton shortstop Carlos Contreras fielded cleanly but threw away for an error.

Abril walked six. Abril will play third base when he isn't pitching, said Ramirez. "I think he's got a future either way, positional or pitching-wise," Colton coach Bob Ramirez said. "His biggest asset is that he has a great attitude. He's the kind of guy who will get dirty for you." From Stout's standpoint, Abril's biggest asset is his arm.

"He impressed me in the first game (of the doubleheader) when one of our guys hit a shot down the (third-base) line. He knocked it down, and by the time isaidTuesday.
