coming from 2049 feet above mean sea leveL The announcement comes from Curtis Lewis Jr of Savannah Ga president of Capital Communications Inc which owns and operates WLTX-TV Lewis said the new tower will provide a major increase in Channel coverage in the Columbia market and surrounding areas Channel 19 filed application with the Federal Communications Commission Jan 31 seeking approval to modify its broadcasting facility From the time approval is granted and this is expected to only be a formality the new tower will be in operation in six months The 2049 feet will dwarft the towers of WIS-TV 1500 feet and WOLD-TV 1149 feet The new tower will he located on the north side of Screaming Eagle Road in Richland county and approximately 11 miles northeast of Columbia city limits The new antenna will also increase Channel power from the present 1250000 watts to an effective radiated power of five million watts making it the most powerful in the midlands and possibly in South Carolina WOLDTV went to 36 million UHF watts when it built its new tower while WIS power stands at 316000 watts It should be pointed out that a VHF signal like WIS is much stronger than a UHF signal All Vs are limited to 325000 watts by the FCC tend it to a point north of Lancaster and to a point south of Bamberg That makes it a minimum of 65 miles It could be more in certain areas proposed new grade1 contour reception will expand to just about equal of the present grade giving Channel 19 one of the most powerful television signals in central South Laughridge said expenditures to construct the new tower would be excess of 82 In terms what this means is viewers now 40 miles away like Newberry and Orangeburg will get a signal as strong as people in downtown Columbia and the signal these cities were receiving will now reach Lancaster and other points 65 or more miles away CBS vice president for marketing Scott Michels said: congratulate Capital Communications and WLTX-TV in announcing plans for a new tower Elver since it began operations more than 30 years ago it has continued through the years to improve its visability and service as a CBS -affiliate in the Columbia market place construction of this new tower will substantially upgrade the au- -dience level of Channel 19 and we are delighted that WLTX-TV is so firmly committed to the future of broadcasting and the continued service in the Columbia Construction of a new tower in the long run was a must for Channel 19 CBS within a few years will dis- tribute all signals by satellite junking the present co-axial cable system (telephone lines) With the split-up of rates are going up However with its new tower Channel 19 will almost reach the coverage capacity of Channel 10 EXPANDED coverage is planned because of our great confidence in the future growth of the Columbia Lewis said new proposed grade contour will provide almost 100 per cent coverage over Channel present countour and will reach approximately 935000 people based on the 1980 What Lewis say is the new coverage will increase the clout of the Columbia market When Channel 25 (WOLDTV) increased its power the Columbia market moved up from 90 to No 81 in the market ratings which are based on the number of homes served and population in the coverage area However Columbia has lost ground since then and now ranks 87th Channel increase could move Columbia to about 80th and possibly the high More power increases by the stations could eventnaHy put Columbia in the elite the top 50 market Of course at the same time this means increased rates to advertisers Dick Laughridge vice Resident and general manager of WLTX-TV said course Pm excited This is a giant step forward WLTX-TV began as WNOK-TV in 1953 on Channel 67 with less than 100000 watts and is oldest continuously operating television station current signal is approximately a 40-mile radius and the new proposed grade countour will ex 8:00 (10X4CX4GX6WX26X36) Legmen: Jack and David are
