"The offensive line did a good job and we got a much better performance from the fullback spot," Osborne noted. Dodie Donnell was second-leading rusher, piling up 84 yards on just 11 carries. "Stan Waldemore (tackle) deserves a lot of the center Tom Davis declared. Ruben Vaughan (Colorado defensive tackle who had been quoted earlier as making several derogatory remarks about Nebraska) is good enough to be a starter in the NFL, as a St.

Nebraska scored first in the game by taking advantage of initial miscue, a Knapple fumble covered by NU linebacker Lee Kunz, who hails from the Buffalo State. Though the Huskers move, Billy Todd booted a 42-yard field goal that barely cleared the cross bar for a 3-0 lead. Colorado's 98-yard kickoff return immediately followed. Early in the second quarter came the Nebraska fumble and the Buffs' second TD.

The Huskers were down. 15-3. There was a lot of confusion following second TD. Nebraska was called for having 12 men on the field during the touchdown run (which resulted in a 15-yard penalty on the ensuing kickoff), and also of having 12 men in action when the extra point kick was blocked. The last call moved the ball half the distance, and the Buffs managed a two- point conversion.

The CU fumble which led to 28- vard scoring run and TD toss to Brown got the Huskers their narrow halttime lead. Nebraska suffered another penalty on the extra point play following catch. This time it was because only 10 Huskers were on the field. Todd made the first conversion kick but missed the second after the five-yard stepoff. Todd made up for that midway through the third stanza with a 34-yard field goal to stake the Huskers to a 19-15 edge, but it was two fourth-quarter touchdowns which settled the issue Hipp scored his second touchdown on a four-yard run with just over eight minutes remaining.

That boosted the count to 26-15 and sent the card section signs flying. Colorado tried a pass on fourth down on its next possession. But monster back Jim Pillen foiled the play with a hard tackle and offense responded by driving 59 yards in nine plays to produce the final score when Donnell banged in from two yards out. While pleased with the defense and the running game, Osborne was disturbed by passing, which produced just five completions in 21 attempts. "We started right out with a deep Osborne said of first play, "but that was intercepted.

We called a couple of other plays. That shows they always he added, in obvious answer to fans who were calling for more of the type of play which helped the Huskers subdue Alabama earlier in the season. By Ken Hambleton State College Writer Fremont The mud and rain had stopped Midland once this season, but the Warriors showed they learned how to adapt as they blanked Doane, 33-0, Saturday night in a Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game. The Warriors lost their second game of the season to Chadron in a muddy game in which midland gained just 80 yards and gave up more than 200. But under similar conditions, the Warriors rolled up 350 yards rushing and held Doane to 77 total yards to take command of the NIAC lead. Senior Chuck Micek broke the game open, racing 97 yards with the opening kickoff to put Midland ahead 7-0.

The Warriors, now 5-2 and 30 in the NIAC, then marched 76 yards in 14 plays on options and power dive plays with sophomore quarterback Doug Lanik running the final five yards to put Midland ahead 14-0 with 4:27 left in the first quarter. Senior running back Rick Klug then opened up outside running game, rushing five times for 41 yards in an 11- play, 79-yard scoring drive, capped by 22-yard touchdown run which put Midland ahead 20-0 at the half. Lanik scored on a 38-yard option play to complete a 59-yard drive and Jim Tolbert scored on a 53-yard run on next possession to close the scoring. The Warriors also posted their best defensive half of the season, holding Doane to one first down and no yards passing after intermission. no question that we learned about playing in the mud when we lost to said Midland Coach Don Watchorn.

Entering the tournament with the second worst record last year, coach Dave Islanders lost in the semifinals to runner-up North Platte, but came back to defeat Lincoln East for the consolation championship. That same match-up was repeated Saturday night in this edition of the Trans- Nebraska Capital Division tournament, but this time the Spartans of coach Myron Oehlerking gained revenge for last loss and a loss already inflicted by Grand Island this season. East turned back the Islanders, to win the title.

Leading the Spartan attack was Kerry Karst with 11 points and Kay Herbert with eight points, while Theresa Makovicka dominated the net with seven kill spikes. East gained the finals via wins over Lincoln Southeast, 15-0 and 15-4, and Fremont, 1315, 15-10 and 15-9. Grand Island came into the tournament under different circumstances this year, with the No. 1 seed after posting a 10-1 records prior to tournament seeding. The only loss had been to Columbus, the Trans- Nebraska Plains Division champion.

Grand Island received a first round bye and then downed Lincoln High, 15-12, 13-15 and 15-10 to gain the finals. The win improved record to 14-5 on the season, while Grand Island now stands at 11-2.
