'6D Odober 9, 1977, Lincoln, Sunday Journal and Star Huskers enjoy same old song Nebraska page ID. By Dave Sittier staff Sports Writer Manhattan, Kan. If this story sounds like a broken record, a simple explanation Isaiah Hipp keeps breaking records Hipp, sterling Iback who grabbed local and national headlines the past two weeks while filling sports pages with the news of his running feats, was up to his crafty tricks here Saturday afternoon against Kansas State. It was like the same song second verse. While no other Husker cracked the magic 200- yard rushing barrier more than once in their Nebraska careers, Hipp did it in back-to- back games romping to a Husker single game record of 254 yards last week against Indiana.

Hipp ripped K-State tor 207 more to lead Nebraska to a 20-0 victory over the Wildcats. Hipp, who has amassed a staggering 583 yards in just three games which certainly must be another Nebraska record added a new twist to his latest performance by scoring a couple of touchdowns. Held to just a two-point conversion against Indians, Hipp hit paydirt twice against the with cross-country scoring jaunts of 66 and 82 yards on identical plays, It's called a Hipp said of the play which saw him take a pitch from the quarterback and swing to the right side of the Nebraska line, much like the old student body play of yesteryear. it (the 41-pitch) is designed to break inside or Hipp said just take the ball and follow my blockers and make a decision which way to go Running toward the South portion of KSU Stadium on both home run scoring punches. Hipp made the correct decision both times, much to the delight of red-clad Husker tans seated in the South end zone.

Aided by the downfield blocking of tight end Ken Spaeth on both scores, Hipp said he was elated with the 82- yarder which became the second longest scoring run in Husker history. was happy on that one because a guy had me and I was lucky enough to get away from Hipp said of the run which was two-yards shy af former Husker John 84-yard touchdown against Cregon State in 1954. record did better former Nebraska fullback Frank Solich's 80-yarder against Air Force in 1965. After his 66-yarder on the first play of the second quarter perked up Nebraska's sputtering otfen.se and gave the Huskers a 7-3 lead. Hipp was rumored to have come off the field and said 'em didn say Hipp said the game, spoiling a jireat story "Someone on the came up to me and said It It IS kind of funny.

Hipp said. "Yards are line for me, but I want to gel the ball over for the whole team Holding an ice pack over a badly swollen left hand that has bothered him since it was stepped on in th Baylor game, Hipp was asked how he would compare himself to Oklahoma State Heisman Trophy candidate Terry Miller. I ve only seen him play once, Hipp said say on a given day 1 could be better than him But he got all the moves and good speed and WJien a Kansas writer informed Hipp that he was going to call him the best back in the Big Fight in his game story, Hipp replied, "you can say that, but I won't. I not a braggart. 1 just try to do my job He's been doing his job so well the past three weeks, overshadowed other fine running back, Rich Berns Hipp explained to reporters his relationship with Berns, who has been hampered by injuries the past three gamjis Richard and I really talk Hipp said in reference to both of their quiet lypie personalities "But we get along fine.

"I can't remember a thing that happened. Following the Baylor game in which he gained 122 yards. Hipp had suggested that maybe the Nebraska coaches should find a way to play himself and Berns at the same time.

Asked if he still telt that way. Hipp who was chided by Husker coach Tom Osborne for his coaching suggestions said he preferred not to discuss the subject, "I just want to do my said the powerfully built. 200- pound Hipp who also goes by his initials I Hipp. "If that means getting 100 yards or 200 yards. 1 don't care as long we While 200-yard days and outstanding efforts by the Hipp- express might get to sound like a broken record, it's sweet music to Nebraska fans.

Osborne picked for committee Houston, Texas Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne is one of 82 college coaches, sportswr iters and sportscasters who have been named the selection committee for the eighth annual Rotary Lombardi college Lineman of the Year Award Four finalists for the award will be selected and announced early in December and honored in Houston at the Lombardi award dinner on Jan, 19. 1978 The award is presented annually to the offensive or defensive college lineman best exemplifying the discipline of football great Vince Lombardi Previous recipients include Rich Glover in 1973. Cornhusker quotes Compiled by Dave Sittier Safety Larry Vaiasek On his clutch fourth quarter interception "Hey, you should be tallvmy to my younger brother Ron. He has six or seven interceptions this year, (at Silver Creek High School) I haven't been doing that well. Seriously, we were in a three-deep zone coverage and Rene (cornerback Anderson) tipped the ball and I caught it.

I was so excited I almost started running before I caught it, so I had to juggle it for a little bit." Monster Jim Pillen On Kansas State's fourth quarter touchdown pass "It was all my fault. The tight end came out and blocked me, so I reacted by moving up. The tight end got in behind me then and I just about died when he caught it. I blew it." Linebacker James Wightman On his first start of the season "I think I did a good job and I think the films will show that. But i'm just like the rest of this team, I have to continue to improve." Offensive guard Greg Jorgensen On Kansas State's defense "They were playing a soft defense The tackles and the middle guards were play way off the ball and the linebackers were going with the flow We were running into each other and it was getting very frustrating.

But we finally got it worked out. On Isaiah Hipp "It's great to have a back like that and also Richard (Berns) because we know they are capable of going all the way on every play. We just have to open a little hole and they are gone. It's great for the lineman" Quarterback Randy Garcia "We faltered at times, but if we had gone for it on fourth and one, instead of kicking that last field goal. I'm sure we could have made it.

We had a little better execution in the second half." Tight end Ken Spaeth On Nebraska's new play, a tight end screen, which was tried twice "It didn't work very well did it? (The two completions gained iust six yards.) I had high hopes for the play. AAaybe another time." comments Compiled by Randy York Head coach Ellis Rainsberger About his argument with officials at the outset of the fourth quarter "We wanted to go for two when it was 179, but the officials said we can't change our minds after the kicker went onto the field. We wanted the wide side of the field, the side closest to us. They wouldn't give me an explanation until after the play," On Nebraska's last touchdown "We gambled. It was my fault We went with a safety blitz and they got outside (with Ken Brown's 27-yard run on a wingback reverse) on us.

It's better to try than not try at all. "Nebraska is a very good football team with big play people. Our defense played hard, but three plays realty hurt us. Hipp rolled his hips on us the first touchdown and Brad Horchem (K-State's defensive rover) sprained an ankle on the second touchdown and couldn't catch Hipp, He didn't play the rest of the day. "I was pleased with our defense against a good offensive football team, I thought Nebraska did an excellent job defensing our tailbacks.

They just lined up and whipped us up front. They did not stunt like they had done in the past." Tailback Mack Green Ncbr.isna lust played straight on football. No slanting No stunting No nothing like we had practiced all week I tr.ed to work for the open hole, but there iust weren't very many there today." Comparing the 52 yards on 20 carries against' Nebraska to the 181 yards on 37 carries last week against Mississippi State "We worked on the Nebraska tackles going out and the ends coming in and Nebraska didn'i do it. We could nave done better though. I know our offensive line is bettor than what we showed today.

I thought Mississippi State hit harder." On Nebraska's chances the rest of the season "They won't be champs It's not the same old Nebraska That defense isn't going to hold up. I don't think they'll finish in tnc top two." ONLY ROPE-A-DOPr Our Reg. 4.94 jump rope has maple wood handles, steel ball bearings. Hipp ran the same right end sweep for 82 yards and a 17-3 bulge. "Both of those plays came off just like you draw them on the Osborne recalled. Spaeth (tight end Ken) was way down field to throw the final block. But everyone had to do his job to spring Hipp A strong wind, gusting 20 miles per hour, brought a lot of strategy into play. K-State won the opening coin toss and elected to take the wind.

The ploy paid off with the 3-0 lead the Wildcats enjoyed at the end of the first quarter. Nebraska, wanting the wind for the fourth quarter, elected to receive at the start of the second half. Wildcat coach Ellis Rainsberger upset those plans by choosing to kickoff into the wind. got to give them Osborne noted. "They felt they could stay close and hoped the wind would give them the needed advantage if it got down to where a field goal might determine the outcome in the fourth quarter." 82-yard run totally eliminate chances.

That was the only first down Nebraska recorded during the entire third period. The run was, however, the longest by a Husker since Frank Solich dashed 80 yards against the Air Force in 1965. It missed by just two scant yards of tying Nebraska's alltime longest an 84-yard TD run by John Edwards against Oregon State in 1954. "I was disappointed we move the ball better in the third quarter," Osborne admitted. for the one long run, that was it.

We needed another touchdown before they got the wind for the fourth quarter in order to breath a little K-State kept the outcome in doubt by starting an 80-yard touchdown march late in the third quarter. The Wildcats faced a fourth-down situation three times in the drive, but still managed to score. K-State got off the hook the first time when Randy Rick, who had blocked a punt against Indiana, reached the punter but not the ball. A roughing the kicker penalty kept the K-State march alive. A quarterback sneak managed the needed one yard on a second fourth-down try.

Later, the Wildcats lost on a third down play and would have faced fourth and 20. But a dead ball, piling on call against the Huskers moved the ball half the distance to the goal line. Suddenly it was fourth and seven at the 13. defense blitzed on the sure pass play call. Linebacker Lee Kunz was there.

So was tackle Rod Horn. But K- State quarterback Dan Manucci escaped them both to throw a TD toss to tight end Paul Coffman. Breathing became more difficult again. K-State was within eight points at 17-9. "We had the guy dead to Osborne recalled.

"But that the only tackle we missed today. They have a fine offense though not a sensational one. But we still need to improve our tackling." It was time for more strategy on part. He called for a two- point conversion try. The run-pass option failed when Horn and safety Larry Vaiasek teamed to tackle Manucci a yard short.

"We could breath a little easier Osborne said. need another touchdown and a two-point conversion just to Though next drive was stopped at the K-State 28, Vaiasek intercepted a pass on the Wildcats next play and the Huskers drove to the K- State four where they faced a fourth-and- one situation. "We could have gone for Osborne admits, "but a field goal would pretty much put it out of Todd did just that with his 20-yarder. That gave the Huskers a comfortable, 209 edge. NU linebacker Tom Vering soon recovered his second fumble of the day and Brown put the icing on the cake with his 27-yard TD dash with 21 seconds left, "Kansas State is playing its best football in Osborne said.

"They were juiced up and ready to play. They always play us well "Our mistakes led to that touchdown of NU defensive coordinator Lance Van Zandt observed. "We should have had the passer. But, they'(l have never gotten down there if it been for the roughing the kicker penalty and the piling on call. "But I was pleased the defense came up with some big Van Zandt added.

"Vering got those two fumbles and we had three pass interceptions (two by Rene Anderson in addition to the one by Vaiasek), We played with more intensity and were hitting the crowd of 41,100 the fourth- largest in K-State history was at least half red, as nearly 15,000 Husker fans made the trek here from Nebraska.
