The push for court action was these men behind the Presx- r dent. Displaying the qualities that earned them the collective name of "the Berlin Wall' 1 among White House insiders, Haldeman and Ehrlichman were cool* precise, steely. Voice for Nixon Ehrlichman, wrapping up five days of testimony, complained he had had no chance to "raise a voice for the President." Haldeman, just beginning his turn, raised his voice at the outset—stunning the committee by revealing he had listened to two of the secret tapes that Nixon has denied both the • j senators and Special Watergate Prosecutor Archibald Cox. He said the tapes—made of conversations Nixon had with White House counsel John W. Dean III last Sept. 15 and on March 21 this year—refute Dean's allegations that the President was at least aware of efforts to hush up high-level involvement in the Watergate bugging plot. "I am convinced that the President had no awareness of any such acts until March of this year," Haldeman said in a 94-page opening statement that took htm some two hours to r • read. The questioning of Haldeman begins today and is likely to last the rest of the week. Seven More Witnesses Bone-weary and mindful that their hearings are far behind schedule, the committee voted to take a break after hearing just seven more witnesses— scrublbing at least temporarily the scheduled appearances of a half-dozen more in the "Watergate phase" of its probe heightened by Haideman's disclosure that he had listened to two of the tapes—one of them as recently as this month in tifc r privacy of his own home* m6te than two months after he left his powerful position as White House chief 6f staff. He said the President authorized him to review the tapes and report to him on their contents. Haldeman Heard Tapes "It's strange that Mr. Haldeman can hear the tapes but the committee cannot hear them," mused chairman Sam J. Ervin, tKN.C, refusing to accept Haldeman's plea that he was under presidential orders not to disclose what was in them.
