'Pack loses Dickey in 24-6 loss to Rams MILWAUKEE (AP) Lynn Dickey started hearing the boos early Sunday afternoon, and their decibel level peaked when he trotted onto the field with the rest of the Green Bay Packer offensive unit with 7:17 left in the third quarter. Three incomplete passes later, Dickey trudged back to the sideline, disgustedly snapping his helmet strap. Now the boos were mixed with a chant. want Whitehurst! We want many yelled They meant David Whitehurst, the eighth round draft choice from Furman and only other quarterback on their roster. get him next week.

Dickey was hit as he threw his 36th pass on the final play in the Packers' 24-6 defeat by the Los Angeles Rams. In all likelihood, it also was his final play of the National Football League season, as he tumbled to the turf with a broken lower left leg Dickey, prone for several minutes while team doctors and trainers tended to him, finally was carried by stretcher to an ambulance and taken to a hospital. His injury took considerable edge off the levity in the locker room after perhaps their finest game of the season. Now 6-3 with victories in four of their last five games, they kept a one game lead over Atlanta in the National Conference West, while Green Bay slipped to 2-7 quarterback Pat Haden completed 10 of 17 passes for 146 yards, while John Cappelletti led a ball control ground game with 74 yards in 20 carries. Haden led a 96-yard march on the second series.

He passed to Harold Jackson for nine yards and to Lawrence McCutcheon for 27. Terry Nelson gained 18 yards on a tight end reverse to the Packer 2yard line, and McC7tcheon scored on the first play of the second quarter. Moments later, safety Elmendorf caught a fumble by Packer rookie Terdell Middleton in the air and raced 47 yards to the Green Bay 32. Haden passed to McCutcheon for 27. then tossed a 6-yard scoring pass to Nelson, who beat linebacker Tom Toner over the middle.

Cornerback Pat Thomas intercepted a Dickey pass on the next series and returned 29 yards to set up Rafael Septian 32- yard field goal as the Rams led 17-0 four minutei before halftime. Dickey connected with Steve Odom on a 65-yard scoring bomb late in the third quarter, but that merely interrupted the booing. Haden retaliated by leading a 65-yard march capped by Wendell Tyler's 1- yard touchdown plunge with 12:55 to play. think we played excellent football, but I just hated to see Dickey get hurt like that on the last Coach Chuck Knox said. not sure who hit him.
