First Aid Group Hears Doctor Talk on Cancer The Red Cross First Aid De- tachment for the Liquor Control Board, meeting yesterday in the Northwest Office Building, heard Dr. Samuel B. Fluke talk on cancer, its symptoms and its treatment. Doctor Fluke is medical advisor for the Harrisburg Red Cross Chapter's First Aid Department. Paul Sauers, in charge of the detachment, presided at the meeting, assisted by Miss, Loretta Sweigert, secretary of the group.

Following Doctor Fluke's address, a movie prepared by the American Cancer Society was shown. The detachment, which has been in existence for three years, is staffed entirely by volunteer' personnel employed in the building. Members are trained in first aid and are certified to administer such care. Penbrook Lions Club Marks Anniversary His experiences in the South Pacific were related by Comdr. K.

D. Strickler, United States Navy Supply Corps, at a Charter Night meeting of the Penbrook Lions Club Tuesday in Colonial Country Club. Helping the local club mark its first anniversary were Joseph Spangler, Chambersburg, deputy district governor, and five members from both Harrisburg and Paxtang Lions Clubs. Louis L. State Veterans Paid $2,457,595 Last Week Bill for School Building Subsidy While the Republican-controlled House Education Committee is trying to work out a plan whereby the State will provide at least a part of salary increases asked by public school teachers, Senate Democrats yesterday introduced a series of bills that would provide even more money for schools than now contemplated. For salary boosts there is an item in the 1947-49 budget for $21,000,000 with an extra-unallo-(in cated sum of $27,000,000 that can be tapped. for the teachers. The immediate work before the House committee now is to determine what part of the salary increases should come from the Commonwealth and how much the local school districts, through new tax- ation, should contribute. Bills for Building Democratic bills in 1 the Senate would establish a State school building fund and provide for increased State school subsidies.

The measures would provide for State loans to school districts for construction, and would establish additional teaching units and subsidy yardsticks for rural districts falling in specified student population ranges. Districts would be entitled to; two dollar refunds for each child examined under the State's health program. A measure proposed $100 pensions for superannuated teachers and provisions permitting instructors to retire on pension after reaching the age of 55. Instructors' allowances for attending conferences called by county superintendents would be raised from two to four dollars a half day. A $16 ceiling would be fixed.

A three-member State Tax Commission would be substituted for the Revenue Department's tax units and the Board of Finance and Revenue under a measure introduced in the Senate. Sponsored by Minority Leader John H. Dent, it wuold require members be tax experts and prohibit appointment of all members from the same political party. The experts would be appointed by the Governor at $12,000 a year. City Women Given Prizes In WOR Anniversary Harrisburg was saluted Tuesday during the "Better Half Matinee" over WOR as part of the station's silver anniversary celebration.

Three city women were awarded prizes for letters written explaining why they were the "better half" of their families. Winners were Mrs. Clara McDannel, 10 South Fifteenth street; Mrs. Howard Gale, 3513 North Fourth street, and Mrs. J.

W. 3683 North Fifth street. Participants in the broadcast were asked questions about Harrisburg, including statistics on the weight of the dome of the State Capitol (52,000,000 pounds), the Susquehanna River and city industries. State Treasurer Ramsey S. Black today announced payments to State veterans under the servicemen's readjustment act amounted to 595 last week, paid in 121,627 checks.

This amount was $429,237 less than paid out during the preceding week. The weekly payment a year ago at this was $3,991,179. Unemployment compensation payments last week were $1,320,199, paid in 77,456 checks, a drop of over the previous week. During the corresponding week in 1946 the total payments were $2,565,357.
