4 Daily Press Monday November 30 1970 Jackrabbits Rams lose in playoff games Aerial display by Jacoby proves to be Ram downfall rushing attack surprises Rabbit defense DAILY PRESS The Jackrabbits the 1970 Golden League champions finished the season with an 8-2-1 record TO NITE thru WES (R) "THE LOSERS'7 AND "CASTLE KEEP" UPI all-coast football team STARTS WEDNES (GP) 19iO United College football SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) Press International All Coast team: Offense THE SAGA OF PRETTY-BOY FLOYD a VICTORVILLE just couldn't catch up after falling behind We tried to come out of it but said Victor Valley High School Jackrabbit head football coach Wade Sawaia following his 19-0 loss to Central of El Centro Friday night team fought hard to come back Our defense allow Central a touchdown in the second half Their third TD came on an Sawaia added The Jackrabbits were knocked out of the CIF AA playoffs with the loss to the Spartans Central a team highly touted for its passing attack went to the air only 11 times and completed only four passes for just six yards in Friday's victory The Spartans surprised Victor Valley especially in the first half with its rushing attack They rolled up 191 yards on the ground to beat the tough Victor Valley defense Central came out running in the first period as they took the opening kickoff on the 21 yard line From there they drove 79 yards on 14 plays for their first score 12 of those 14 plays were running plays and one of the two passes went incomplete The completed pass went for just two yards The drive was capped off when lee Moore smashed over from two yards out for the score The try for two extra points was no good and Central led 6-0 with 5:44 left in the period Central took over early in the second period and again began a drive for a score They began their drive on their own 44 yard line Ied by the running of Moore the Spartans drove to the Victor Valley one yard line where quarterback Jim Lydick danced into the end zone KEKDIEY All-state quarterback Steve Jacoby passed for four touchdowns and ran for another in leading Reedley College to a 49-0 victory over Desert Conference champion Victor Valley College Rams Saturday night in Reedley Before a crowd of 10000 fans the sophomore put on an aerial display that saw him complete 17 of 26 passes for 325 yards in the first game of the state Small Junior College playoffs Reedley ranked No 2 in the United States and No 1 in California will now meet College of the Redwoods who defeated Gavilan next week in the state championship game Reedley began their scoring assault on the first play from scrimmage after the game's opening kickoff as Jacoby rifled a long pass to halfback Junior Square for 72 yards and a touchdown The PAT attempt by Iarry Battle was blocked and the score was 6-0 later in the game Jacoby threw two TD passes to tight end Duane Bettencourt for 12 yaids each He also hit split end Iarry Battle on a 55 yard scoring pass play He also ran for a 13 yard touchdown The game's opening scoring play made to score 6-0 Reedley came back six minutes later with another score as Jacoby lined a pass to Bettencourt for 12 yards making the score 12-0 In the second quarter Jacoby hit Battle for 55 yards with 10 40 remaining in the half making the score 20-0 After Cliff Trask intercepted a Dave Giancola aerial the Tigers moved toward the goal line again On the fifth play of the drive fullback Brian Watson broke numerous tackles and he rambled 31 for the touchdown putting Reedley ahead 28-0 at halftime During the first half the VVC offense could only muster one di ive as they drove to the Reedley 23 yard line before they lost the ball on downs Reedley kicked off to VVC's Dennus Peters who returned the ball to the 33 yard line Prom there the Rams sustained their only-major drive of the night as they took the ball down to the Reedley 11 yard line before they were forced to cough up the ball on fourth down The Tigers took over the ball and marched 89 ards for another score The drive was capped as Jacoby raced 13 yards for the score With Reedley leading 354) Victor Valley had the ball on the 24 yard line when Cliff Trask intercepted another Giancola pass and took it down to the 12 yard line Jacoby hit Bettencourt in the end rone and the score was 42-0 Reedley added its final TD as reserve quarterback Randy Ballard led the Tigers 60 yards for the score Ballard hit reserve tight end Mark Hickman with a seven yard pass making the score 49-0 Reedley finished up with 332 yards passing ami 208 yards rushing for a total of 540 yards VVC had a total offense of 152 yaids with 4 passing and 111 rushing The excellent passing of Jacoby proved to the downfall of the Rams He completed 17 passes to five different receivers The highly touted split end Iarry Battle caught four of Jacoby's passes for 99 yards Tight end Bettencourt had six receptions for a total of 6i yards Tailback Junior Square was on the receiving end of two passes for 94 yards Paul Fribarger caught three aerials for 43 yai ds and Brian Watson had two receptions for 23 yards Jacoby had one pass intercepted by Ram defen sive back Iarry Garrett Fullback Brian Watson led the Reedley rushing crew with 112 yards on 14 carries while Ray Scott had 29 yards on four carries and Randy Jackson rushed for 22 yards on four carries Jacoby ran for 16 net yards He actually ran for 54 yards but the Ram defense knocked him for losses five times for a total of 38 yards lost fit carried the ball 13 times Quarterback Day Giancola completed six of 23 passes for 41 yards while tailback larry Garrett led the Ram running attack with 45 yards on 13 carries John Lyons had 28 yards on 11 carries and Steve Stewart rolled for 20 yards on four carries The Ram season is now over 'They concluded the season with a 7-2 season record and the Desert Conference championship The Rams never gave up Saturday night despite the high score They fought all of the way to stop the Reedley offense and to score on the Tiger defense They didn't do either with much success but they tried hard and fought even harder All of the Reedley players and coaches said that Victor Valley College was the hardest hitting team they have faced this year Sam Samaniego his coaches and his players have started a tradition at VVC It's called win ning and they plan to do a lot of it in the years to come VVC was a cellar-dweller before this year They don't plan on being one again They will have the majority of this team back for action next year They include all Desert Conference first stringers Dave Giancola Chuck Arnold and Mike Ulrick They also include Irry Garrett John Lyons Mike Sowards Ionard Bustos Mike Haskett Luther Jefferson Mike Cambridge Dick Hedrick Dan Johnson Steve Stewart Dennus Peters and Joe Lampignano very proud of the way the team played this year They all did a fine job through the entire year We just stop Jacoby Saturday night and Reedley beat said Samaniego The Jackrabbit offense never got past the 50 yard line during the first half of play During the second half every time the Jackrabbits began a drive towards the goal line the Spartan defense would come up with a play to stop them The Jackrabbits took the second half kickoff and drove to the Centra! 40 before Central's Steve Lyon intercepted a Paul Partaine pass The next time Victor Valley had the ball it was on its own 37 yard line when Partaine went back to pass when he was blindsided by tackle Matt Littrell The ball went rolling to the ground and was received by Steve Kandal another tackle Victor Geoff Carter intercepted a Lydick pass on the 10 yard line and moved it up to the 22 before being brought down The interception thwarted another Central drive From the 22 the advanced to the Central 44 yard line before tailback Steve Davisson fumbled and Central recovered A few plays later Victor Valley had the ball and was driving towards the goal line again when David Buchanan intercepted Paul pass and returned it 55 yards for the touchdown defensive end Griff Pifer tried to trip up Buchanan on the two yard line but the Central back maintained his balance and danced into the end zone for the 19-0 score Moore was the leading rusher for Central with 87 yards while Buchanan had 66 yards on the ground Victor Valley had a total offense of 100 yards 66 in the air and 34 on the ground Partaine completed seven of 14 passes for the 66 yards The leading rusher for Victor Valley was senior Steve Davisson who was playing in his last game for WHS with 28 yards Junior Mike Cochran ran for 22 yards on three carries score would have been closer if it been for the interception We might have been able to score but the interception broke out explained Sawaia boys have done a
