jet Withington said can make the hardware But the hardware burns The main effort in noise reduction now will be to up the thrust without destroying its to produce a high frequency noise that will be dissipated sooner than the typical low frequency wave now emitted Noise has long plagued designers of the supcrsonics particularly the sonic boom made as the plane exceeds the speed of sound As a result Boeing now claims it foresees use of the SST only on overwater ionics This claim is disbelieved by some anlisonic boom groups which note that Boeing isn't likely to settle for 500 sales by 1990 which might be the case if the craft were used only over water when the potential exists for 1200 sales if overland use is permitted The engine noise remains a big problem however and is so serious that Withington terms il principal research The entire study program was described this way: 1 A thorough review of all the detail design criteria being used 2 A look at the materials techniques and designs being used For example should greater strength be sought in the use of honeycomb metal instead of sheet titanium 3 A review of alternate configurations meaning the basic concept of the plane Airlines which had put up some funds also agreed to delays Withington explained that the prototypes do not necessarily have to be as good as the production models that would follow he said actual performance of the present configuration was a bit too far from what is needed in a production In February he said were about to cut metal The drawings were about to be released to the shop It was a critical With perhaps billions of dollars resting on the decision and with Russia France and England already well ahead with their commercial supcrsonics the Boeing team which prides itself on being dominated by engineers decided to seek the delay was a gap greater than it should between the design and the performance desired Withington said Influencing the decision was the fact that a study team already was on the verge of solving some of the design problems was far better to get corrections made before cutting the Withington said costs now could mean savings later in the Withington explained weight was going up and this comes out of the payloads the plane can An attempt now is being made to lighten the craft without a loss in safety Engine noise also presented a frustrating problem understand the theory of how to NEW YORK (AP) Design and construction problems that have delayed completion of the American supersonic airliner one year to the spring of 1972 arc resulting now in a complete review of the program by the Boeing Co the builder In an interview here II Withington Boeing vice president and manager of its supersonic transport branch said a slight chance exists that even the basic design of the plane could be changed before the end of the year An indication of the completeness of the review was given by Withington in these words: there is a better idea we should know about it now If we decide an idea is good we'll study it more aqd make a final choice later this year not overlooking a thing that anybody can propose that might do a better Included in the new design studies is a concept developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for an even thinner 1 -I i idealized'1 design that would have fixed rather than movable wings W'ithington added however (hat weight and jet engine noise problems were among the major considerations of the study and that considerations of a change in the over-all concept are mostly for insurance The Boeing studies began before last February when the company requested and received a year's delay from the government in its contract to produce two prototype SSTs 54 30 07 SI 30 31 72 64 15 17 42 171 75 4 '8
