He was born In South Boeton. of parents who had been driven from Ireland in the famine days, and though hli father and mother could neither read nor write, in a family of 12 ohlldreh, Dr.

The fact that he tnld Professor Sedgwick, who pleaded with him to accept the appointment from Governor Uoolidge, that the would kill him. and then calmly said, "What Is the difference? What better so he died. His work was not his only monument. He did many other notable things for Boston schools, which space forbidt; mentioning, but Boston schools ews much to Dr. Gallivan, When I became Mayor, one fir Che things that attracted my attention was the lamentable showing In the matter of infant mortality. I called In Dr. Gallivan to advise on the matter, and he suggested the organization of a bureau of child hygiene, which 1 gladly accepted and placed him at the head at the sacrifice of his own work.
