Falls Short Setting Was Right For A Birthday For A Cathedral There are few places left in this country that a person can walk into and still feel a bit awed and speechless by being there Perhaps the reason for that in part is due to the supposedly sophisticated society we live in where things like heart transplants and trips to the moon inspire nothing more than yawns What thrilled generations may bring only laughter from population Whether the modern attitude is altogether good is debatable Still there are some places that have withstood the test of time and continue to spawn an old-fashioned feeling of wonder to any on-looker who might happen by One such place believe it or not is a baseball park not a baseball park with fancy things like an exploding scoreboard or little cartoons It was built with baseball in mind and although many other dramatic sports events have unfolded there most of its legendary moments occurred during the baseball season That park first opened its doors 50 years ago today April 18 1923 and since that time it has become the cathedral of baseball Yankee Stadium just the sound of those two words together conjurs up visions of powerful bats masterful pitching performances and brilliant outfield catches The Mightiest Of All For over four decades Yankee Stadium was the Mount Olympus of baseball for every schoolboy That was where the mightiest team of all the New York Yankees played and won and won and won That was where the Lou Gehrigs the Babe Ruths and the Joe DiMaggios had made it as national heroes And that was where it seemed just about every World Se-rics was played They celebrated that 50th birthday last Sunday in New York as 37000 fans came out to join in the festivities It a mammoth crowd when one considers that 74000 were on hand for the first game 50 seasons ago But at least there were some people who evidently still remembered the glory ana drama of summers past It was at Yankee Stadium where Babe Ruth slammed his 60th home run of the 1927 season off Tom Zachary And it7 was there 34 vears later Roger Maris connected on a fast ball from Tracy Stallard for homer No 61 Back in 1939 Lou Gehrig said his tearful farewell to baseball in the Stadium while proclaiming to be the man on the face of the And it was there in 1948 the Babe his insides being eaten away by cancer spoke a similar farewell in a low hoarse whisper of a voice And it was there in the summer of Joe DiMaggio etched his name in the record book for all time as he went on a probably never-to-be-matched 56-game hitting streak Appointment With Destiny Charlie Keller Tony Lazzeri Phil Rizzuto Bill Dickey Vic Raschi Allie Reynolds Johnny Mize Mickey Mantle Whitey Ford Bobby Richardson Bill Skowron and dozens of others all earned their places in the sun while wearing those Yankee pinstripes at the Stadium in the Bronx And it was there on an October afternoon in 1956 pitcher Don Larsen had an appointment with destiny in a classic mound duel with Sal Maglie The Dodger hurler pitched brilliantly allowing only five hits and just two runs one a home run by Mantle But Larsen pitched even better as he recorded the only perfect game in World Series the final heroics for the home club and the 17505 fans at the Forum Jim Barnett attempted to throw in from out of bounds with only a couple of seconds left and Bridges leaped for an interception had them on the ropes -and let them the disgruntled Attles said going to make some adjustments on Lakers Tired Erickson who like West -and Gail Goodrich scored 17 points
