Train The stork chooses queer places to alight and one of the queerest was the "Owl" train, fast limited of the Southern Pacific, speeding from Los Angeles to Oakland a few days ago. On the "Owl" were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Burckhalter, well known in Martinez, Burckhalter being a nephew of Mr. and Mrs.

J. F. Hoadley of this city. They were on their way to Oakland in anticipation of the event that Mrs. Burckhalter had been expecting for some days.

Old Mr. Stork, however, had different plans than the Burckhalters. Possibly his services were needed elsewhere, or possibly he was tiring on the long flight from Los Angeles. At any rate, he volplaned--or whatever it is storks do--on to the train, depositing in the arms of the astonished Mrs. Burckhalter a bouncing baby boy.

The conductor of the train suggested that the infant be christened "Owliver." Boxing Bouts at Pinole Tonight Several local boxing fans are ticipating a journey to Pinole tonight to witness the seven bout card to presented there at a benefit smoker of the Pinole Pastime Club. S. hall on the 15th of this month. The public is invited to attend these workouts and each evening sees goodly crowd of fans in attendance. Want ads in the GAZETTE bring good results. RED CROSS AIDED BY LOCAL SCHOOL STAMP SALES Martinez school children largely assisted in the sale of the Red Cross Christmas seals here, according to the report made today by Mrs.

H. J. Curry, chairman of the Red Cross Christmas Committee. Of $255.66 collected in Martinez, Mrs. Curry's report gives the children of Martinez Grammar school credit for disposing of seals to the amount $191.

Particular credit, Mrs. Curry says, is due the children of Miss Miller's class, who disposed of $23.58 worth of seals. The next highest class was that of Miss Sharwood, which turned in $16.01. Publishing of the report has been delayed owing to the fact that all the districts of the county had not been heard from. Full returns now, however, are in, the sales being as follows: Antioch $144.15 Alamo 8.74 Ambrose 4.80 Associated 40.00 Brentwood 22.50 Byron 7.09 Briones 1.00 Bay Point 10.00 Crockett 67.50 Cowell 5.00 Concord 16.40 Clayton 3.74 Canyon 1.00 Danville 22.50 Excelsior 22 40 Franklin 1.00 Green Valley 2.00 Hot Springs 10.00 Holland Tract 1.00 Highland 1.00 Iron House 10.00 Jersey 1.00 Knightsen 2.87 Lafayette 15.44 Martinez 255.66 Morgan Territory 1.00 Moraga 1.00 Nichols 6.00 Oleum 4.85 Oak Grove 16.94 Oakley 10.00 Orinda Park 1.00 Pinole 65.00 Port Costa 15.00 Pacheco 10.00 Pleasant Hill 12.14 Pittsburg 235.39 Richmond 99.26 Rodeo 22.50 San Pablo 14.00 Selby 10.00 San Ramon 3.00 Sandmound 1.00 Sheldon 2.40 Sobrante 6.20 Tassajara 1.00 Vine Hill 2.00 Willow Spring 1.00 Walnut Creek 35.16 TOTAL $1252.68 CONCORD WINS CO.

CAGE TITLEMEET BERKELEY The basketball team of the Mt. Diablo High school defeated the team of Alhambra High last night in a hard fought battle. The game was one of the best of the season. In the first half, Alhambra showed good teamwork and gained a slight lead over the opposing team. but in the last half the Concordites pushed to the front.

For years Concord has won the title from Alhambra but this is not due to lack of training or coaching. Martinez boasts of one of the best coaches in the league. A large number of rooters accompanied then team to Concord and they did their bit in cheering. The same crowd returned to Martinez, smiling even though the score was 18 to 12. On Saturday night Mt.

Diablo High School will meet Berkeley High, probably at Concord, to play for the championship of northern California. winning team of this meeting will meet the championship teams of other sections of the state for the state high school championship. SAN PABLO WIFE SEEKS DIVORCE Luis Garcia, of San Pablo, an employe of the Pacific Sanitary Manufacturing Company, of Richmond, was not the pleasantest man in the world to live with, according to the divorce compaint filed here today by Elvira Garcia, through her attorney, Will S. Robenson of Richmond. "Day by day, in every way, he'd bat her and bat her and bat is the Coueism that might be her," evolved after reading Mrs.

Garcia's complaint, for in it she alleges that husband's chief delight was to come home and use her as a punching bag, sometimes varying the program by knocking her down by blows with a frying pan or other convenient weapon, and at others attempting to carve her up with a butcher knife. For these little unpleasantries Mrs. Garcia asks that community property valued at $2850 be awarded her together with attorney's fees in the sum of $100 and court costs of $50. SUCCESS CROWNS BALL GIVEN HERE BY THE C. OF C.

Wednesday night at the meeting of the board of directors of the Martinez Chamber of Commerce, a preliminary report on the third annual ball of the organization was given by the committee which handled the dance, the report showing that more than $375 would be cleared. Following is a portion of the report which was given and which received the praise and commendation of the board: "We respectfully suggest that a special vote of thanks be given to Mrs. W. H. Hanlon, Mrs.

Joyce Barthelson, M. H. Rowell and Harry S. Bell for their part in the program, their portion of the entertainment being donated. "Also a vote of thanks should be given to John Reid III and Eddie Arthur, as well as other Boy Scouts who assisted in the decorations and hat checking as their 'good turn' for the day, and thanks should be extended to Rose Nulty, Muriel Reid Doris Hittman and Verna Young for their assistance in selling the candy and punch.

"Following is the financial re- port: RECEIPTS Advance sale of seats already reported $266.75 (210 tickets have not as as yet been reported.) It is expected that the tickets yet to be heard from will bring the total up considerably. Other matters taken up at the meeting was the acceptance of the application for membership of R. H. Hestter. The date of meetings was left as at present, that of Wednesday evening.

BASEBALL MEET WILL BE HELD HERE THIS EVE. In connection with the organization of a Martinez Ball Club. which is to be a unit of the Three League, a meeting of those interested is scheduled to take place at eight o'clock tonight in the office of County Assessor Meese in the Court House. Important matters relative to the financing of the club will be discussed and steps will be taken toward getting together a winning team for Martinez. Work schedule is proceeding slowly, since complications are being encountered by a desire to hold games in Crockett only when the sugar refinery is closed.

The plant shuts down every second Sunday, it was stated, and a schedule will be prepared on that basis. It is planned to have twenty games in the series, ten to each half, as last year. The league organized at the meeting held in Pittsburg last week by re officers of last year: J. P. Connors of Crockett, president, and William Cohn of Pittsburg, secretary.

The Thomas E. Wilson ball was adopted as the official league ball. It has been decided to move forward the opening game of series a week or two. starting the latter part of April instead of May 6. Richmond entered the league as the traveling team and will be paid $50 for each game played.
