WATER FRONT Realizing the edvantagea of water-front property for the location of factories we may well look upon the increased valuation of Contra Costa property as an index of whet the future holds in store for this County with its 72 miles of shore front Indeed the faith of early settlers in the superior natural advantages of Contra Costa County over other Bay Shore territory may yet be justified as the assured development of Pacific Coast industry and commerce progresses The natural growth which is responsible for these increased valuations is reflected in the growth of this hank It is a healthy growth and we or it preparing for its continuance by rebuilding our banking home to greatly enlarg-s the banking and working space why you find us now in temporary quarters in tlo CURRY realized that he had something active and powerful on hie hook that could only be secured by management He accordingly hauled in and played out to the vigorous play of the fish until he finally got his nose to the surface when Judge Blake of Oakland standing ready with a boat hook dexterously inserted it in the gills and they then landed their prey which proved to be a seven and a half foot we have learned and we do not doubt that in nearly every district well qualified women can be found who if elected for the duties of this office will discharge them with as much seal and intelligence as the men who will consent to undertake them Indeed considering the nature of the duties and interests with whirh it is charged a Board of District School Trustees cannot be complete and well constituted that has no woman representation in its make up But as a rule it would be as much a mistake to make up such boards exclusively of women as of men All the combined experience of the world and human nature the judgment and perceptions of both futhers and mothers is required for the proper administration of the school interests of the young and though our friends of the Central or Walnut Creek District took a departure in the proper direction last Saturday they possibly went a little beyond mark in electing in entire School board of ladies though we believe that their Trus-tees-elect Night Court She had been in a home for incorrigible girls nnd was on probation She told me frankly that Mrs had something herself nnd realizing that this would seal the lips had taken her in to care for the babies could hardly credit the rest of her statements which she made in nq awed half-whisper of how children were loaned for purposes of blnckmnil and whipiied into a state of abject obedience to their temporary mothers ran little risk Nettie told me for many of the children were illegitimate (a fact 1 had not known before) ami their parents as a rule hod little stomach for investigations If the child had a home that was sullicicnt for most of them The bisque doll which I had seen in the arms of girl the first day I visited there was simply a sort of stage-property It was the only dnM in the place All this news a-tonished me but the next announcement made me sec rod One of the little children had broken the doll few weeks previous and Mrs hud then whipped the child mercilessly That was bad enough but tho child had been my child! course at first I thought that Nettie might ho lying trying perhaps to wreak vengeance for a personal grudge But her words 1 rang true She wnllrd over
