Hoopfest Funny thing how history hoi a tendency to npoat Itself with last Saturday's Diablo Valley Athletic League basketball carnival providing another wpi of this phenomenon Last winter when the hoopfest was staged by the now defunct Contra Costa County Athletic League the West's cage forces defeated the East by six points due entirely to a one-sided victory scored by the Albany Cougars over the Antioch Panthers The eame thing happened again In Saturday's hoop-la at Diablo Gym with Albany walloping Antioch by a staggering 35 to 7 margin The Cougar triumph came In the fourth pairing of the six-game program after Las Lomas and Pleasant Hill had battled to an 18 to 18 tie and Liberty and John Swott had finished all-square at 21-all and Livermore had given the East a six-point edge in the progressive score by trimming San Ramon 21 to 18 That made the combined count 63 to 57 In the East's favor at the tourney's half-way point but when Albany and Antioch took the court the East's victory hopes were blasted Just the way It happened before when the Cougars swamped the Panthers Albany's 35 to 7 win boosted the West Into a 22-point advantage which eras too much for Pittsburg and Mt Diablo to make up against their respective opponents Alhambra and Acala- The Pl'ats ail Red Devils came close to overcoming the deficit Pittsburg gaining back nine points with a 32 to 23 edge over the Bulldogs and Diablo whittling off 10 more points by trimming the Dons 33 to 23 But that valiant closing effort still left the East three points shy of catching the West's 138 to 135 final victory margin Antioch's sod experience in tho two tournaments staged by this section's prep quintets Is enough to give the Panthers a Jinx complex Actually the Antioch collapse was the more surprising because Just the night before the Panthers had shaded highly-regarded Alhambra in a 36 to 34 battle at Martinss looking considerably stronger than the club veteran coach Babe Atkinson was ex- -pected to field this season The tournam-mt brough out several indication? for the upcoming league campaign By jhelr decisive triumph over Acalanes Mt Dtablo's Red Devils jumped into the position of cofavorite with Pittsburg with the Dons' stock decreasing In preseason estimates Fittsburg and Acalanes were figured as the leading contenders for the DVAL's Contra Costa Division title Of course an abbreviated game of only two eight-minute quarters such as the tournament competition provided does net give a true picture of the teams' relativs merits But The Bed Devils' superiority over Acalanes was so marked that a longer game might have produced an even wider edge At one time in the first quarter Diablo was out In front 17 to 3 In the DVAL's other division the East Bay Albany should sweep through all opposition with little trouble Alhambra and San Ramon were rated as pos slble threats but judging by the way the Cougars handled the ball and hit the basket in their landslide win over Antioch neither Alhambra nor San Ramon rcnsoLUificossiPj By Russ tnlil s'e the practice season After starting out with three defeats in a row 50 to 44 by San Ramon 32 te 33 by Tracy and 45 te 35 by
