on the field No one was injured in either accident although both planes a Navy fighter and a four-engine Capital Airways transport were damaged extensively At 9:15 Sunday morning the Navy plane piloted by Lt Welch had a wheel brake lock on its take-off and in high winds it left the runway about half-way down and nosed over in a grassy area bordering the strip The plane a F4U Corsair used in training by Columbia Auxiliary Squadron No 742 of the Naval Reserve suffered extensive damage to its propeller left wing and landing gear The airport crash's standby crew remained on guard over the plane until midnight in view of the lara amount of gasoline which hair leaked from the plane's tank around the area While the emergency crew was still on duty at the scene of this accident the Capital Airways airliner with a crew and 55 military passengers aboard developed engine trouble and cirqlcd back to the field where lt plowed into the grass to the left of the same runway where the Navy plane had had difficulty The plane which had stopped here en route from El Paso Tex to Camp Kilmer left the airport at 10:50 bound for Washington About 25 minutes later it notified the tower that its Inside right engine had ceased operations and was on fire Capt Dwight Dir of Nashville Tenn pilot of the DC-4 upon landing discovered that the plane was without hydraulic pressure for brakes flaps or Patterson The reporter also said that when Ferrell was arrested in Phenix City last July he was brought before National Guardsmen and told them Deputy Sheriff Albert Fuller was his friend Although it was not brought out in the testimony that was the occasion Ferrell was arrested on charges of driving while inljxical-ed Strickland said Ferrell attempted to give three cheers for Fuller but fell
