GRIFFIN ITI Sports Editor LOS ANGELES (UPI)-The White Sox. and Angels were setting the trading pace at the winter baseball meetings today but the major league moguls were having trouble agreeing on swaps involving "big name" players. Five player trades were swung at the opening of the meetings Cubs were involved in three of the White Sox in two and the Angels in the biggest trade, plus the biggest role in the annual player draft. Out of it all came very Dick Walsh.

"We've got a shot at it now." agreed manager Lefty Phillips. "We lost too many games last year on defense." The 3-for-3 swap involving Berry was the largest deal on the opening, day of meetings, and the Angels also were the only team which drafted more than one player in the annual draft of minor league players. The draft, which has been sagging in importance in recent years, hit a record all-time low with only eight players picked, including two by the Angels, for a total of $200,000 far from the 109 players and $475.000 of a year ago.

The most familiar name in the opening deals was that of Hoyt Wilhelm, the knuckleball reliever who. at 47. is the major oldest active player. Wilhelm, sold by the Atlanta Braves in late season to the Cubs when the Cubs were fighting in vain for the pennant, returned to the Braves along with cash in exchange for Hal Breeden, a 26-year-old first i baseman who led the Interna-. tional league in home runs with 37 and runs-batted-in with 116 at Richmond.
