Two long scoring jaunts of 77 and 60 yards by halfback Norris Stevenson aided the Missouri Tigers to a 41-19 football victory over Oklahoma Saturday and kept them on the road toward a Big Eight Conference championship. Missouri had a w'ide margin at the end, the score by no means portrayed the toughness of the game. First Blood Oklahoma got a homecoming crowd of 56,500 to its feet or the 4th play from scrimmage. Halfback Mike McClellan sped 70 yards down the sidelines after a cutback through tackle to get the Sooners off to a 6-0 lead. But that was the last time they enjoyed the advantage. immediately showed its muscle, storming 67 yards in 14 plays for the tying touchdown.

Donnie Smith plunged two yards for the score and Bill Tobin kicked the first of 5 extra points, giving him 21 straight for the season. He added two field goals of 32 and 29 yards to wind up with 11 points for the day. It was a glorious day for Coach Dan Devine and his strong band of Tigers as they handed the Sooners their first conference defeat at Owen Field 18 years. The verdict also ruptured a 14-game winning streak the Sooners had forged against Missouri. Takes Lead Two fast touchdowns in the second quarter catapulted Missouri to a 24-6 lead.

Smith smashed through center on a trap play and went 30 yards and minutes later Stevenson ''Urged around left end on a power sw-'cp on his first long gallop that covered 77 yards. But the Sooners still fire and countered with their second touchdown late in the period on a 36- yard run by halfback Melvin Sandersfeld. This gave Oklahoma new hope and it came out for the second half with a vengeance. The Sooners used up most of the 3rd quarter with a 71- sweep in 16 plays, scoring a touchdown with less than 5 minutes lett in the period. Quarterback Jimmy Carpenter plunged over from the one-yard-line but 11 a Ronnie Hartline was top gun in the surge, picking up 58 yards.

His big shot was a 26-yard smasher up the middle that carried to the Okla- hunia 57 and from ihere he i added 26 more yards in 5 tries to put the Sooners on the Missouri one-yard-line. Ineffective Aggies Top 7-6 By Dick Becker Pat Fischer, bellwether of football fortunes for the past 3 seasons, basked in the role for 56 minutes Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

But last 4 minutes of play must nave been a nighmare as his fumble led to Oklahoma only touchdown of the day and 7-6 victory for the Cowboys over the Huskers. A crowd estimated at one of the smallest in recent years, watched in disbelief as the Cornhuskers let the ineffective Aggies off the hook. Until his unfortunate fumble at 29-yard line, Fischer had been brilliant and his 84-yard punt return for a first quarter touchdown had been the difference. API Confusion whether lasl- play touchdown by Oklahoma counted in the game against Missouri was ended Saturday night by Reaves Peters, Big Eight commissioner. Peters said the touchdown would not count because Oklahoma had a baik in motion. Thus Missouri victory stands on the 41-19 score.

On the final play of the Big Eight game, Oklahoma quarterback Bob Cornell squirted 7 yards into the end zone. The gun sounded while the play was in progress, and the touchdown apparently was nullified by the penality. Confusion came later when Oklahoma Bud Wil- winson said Missouri lined the penalty, and this apparently would give the Sooners 6 more points. Wilkinson said Missouri coach Dan Devine apparently signalled his team to decline the penally so Oklahoma have the touchdown. However, Bill Jennings, the linesman, said the touchdown would not count.

State Scores State ground in for the score, using a 14-yard pass and finally an 8-yard scamper for the marker by quart a Jim Elliott who wanted to pass but find a receiver and ran up the middle. He carried two NU defenders into the end zone with him.

Just 1:19 remained in the game when Ted Davis kicked the winning extra point. Ron Meade had missed try in the first quarter after run had given Nebraska its first touchdown in 3 games. Nebraska completed another disappointing afternoon by failing to get off a final play with 12 seconds left after FTscher had picked up 16 yards in two tries when all receivers were covered. No Warmup The Huskers also disdained a pre-game warmup on the field, choosing to limber up in the indoor fieldhouse where they can even practice kicks. Meade missed both the extra point and a field goal attempt.

But the upshot was that the Cornhuskers found themselves with their 4th straight defeat and almost certain to finish in 7th place in the Big 8 Conference. This game had all the earmark- a tie despite mighty efforts to break things loose. Coach Bill Jennings surprised Coach Cliff Cowboys by opening up in a double-wing formation, similar to (he one u.sed by Kansas against Nebraska last week. This with the halfbacks pointed in looked like it might be the answer as the Huskers moved the ball much better than in recent games.
