TICE SUN HERALD SATURDAY AUGUST 1 1992 Corps plans rivers study dredging is not likely By JIM HANNAFORP THE SUN HERALD PASCAGOULA Save the Pascagoula an environment-minded group that helped kill a dredging proposal 2 Vt years ago has its eyes on a US Army Corps of Engineers plan to study possible development along the Pascagoula River The Pat Harrison Waterway District which develops and regulates some of the waterways in south- east Mississippi has up to $250000 to spend on a study But the Corps is trying to decide what to spend the money on Actually implementing anything would require another appropriation from Congress officials said The possibilities for the study funds include evaluating flood zone mapping flood warning systems re-evaluating water supplies for Hattiesburg Laurel and Pascagoula and releasing water upstream to counter low flows on the Pascagoula But the item that got Save the Pascagoula attention was evaluating the extension of navigation up the Pascagoula Corps officials at a hearing Monday night at Pascagoula City Ilall said that is only a possibility and must be considered because the other 14 counties also would have a stake in increased commerce that dredging could bring at the very beginning stages of tlie study trying to generate as much public interest as we can so will identify any problem areas you might know Corps study manager Howard Danley said at the hearing About 45 people attended meeting Some were skeptical that Mississippi Power Co had not surfaced with new plans to dig a barge channel to haul coal up to its Plant Daniel in Escatawpa That was the proposal that put Save the Pascagoula into force in early 1990 Danley and Pat Harrison Waterway District engineer Bill Reid assured the crowd that Mississippi Power had not changed its plans They said it was unlikely that the needs of any other industry along the river would justify dredging Mississippi Power spokesman Buddy Eller said Tuesday the company has no plans to revive the project this point a dead issue In early 1990 we heard the people of Jackson County Eller said Noel Lamey president of Save the Pascagoula said he and three others were at the meeting because they thought it concerned another dredging proposal He said they were glad however to find out that Mississippi Power was not re-emerging with coal-barge plans project we were interested in is dredging on the lower end of the river from the railroad bridge up to mouth of Dog (or Escatawpa) River" Lamey said personally am not opposed to the dredging because the industry there needs it But we are concerned about the Corps' plans to put spoils on the banks of the river" He said heavy rains or high waters would wash them right back in to the river Lamey said the river banks have finally grown back with vegetation that was killed when dredge spoils were dumped on the banks in the 1950s The industries he was referring to include two shipyards in Moss Point and a menhaden processing plant Danley told Lamey and others that project was separate from theirs The waterway district is made up of Clarke Covington Forrest George Greene Jackson Jasper Jones Lunar Lauderdale Newton Perry Smith Stone and Wayne counties Each county contributes money to the district Danley and Reid said a target of the study could be river gauges and flood-warning systems needed in some rural areas Other hearings were scheduled for this week in Rawls Springs and Meridian Danley said 2 Wine tasting a treat for Coast California and Washington state The long list of brands includes Konocti Buena Vista Clos Pegase Leap Bouchard Mirassou Sterling Cuvaison Chalk Hill and Bolla If you know the difference between a fume blanc and a chenin blanc or a chardonnay and a semilion winery brokers and representatives will be there to answer questions Mensi suggests bringing a notebook to record impressions then take the book when you go wine shopping Even with wine snobbery and the old taboos dropping Americans yet reached the high wine-enjoyment stages of their European counterparts Americans apparently were bom with a passion for stronger drink or beer But more are switching to this ancient nectar of gods thanks to the introduction of the peach-colored white zinfandel The wine industry believes the zins may be the lighter transition wine that woos many Americans away from beer By KAT BERGERON THE SUN HERALD Shelves of unfamiliar wines can be as perplexing as conjugating Portuguese verbs Which wine do I serve with fish?
