36 Thursday, October 14, 1971 PAC-8 FOOTBALL Injured Stanford Players Rejoin Team In Workouts THIS DAY IN SPORTS 50-Year-Old Maple Leafs' Owner Dies ARNOLD DEATH AFTERMATH 1971 New York News Inc. World Reserved STANFORD (UPI) -The Stanford Indians should know by tonight how many of their four injured stars will be ready to play against the USC Trojans. Linebackers Jeff Siemon and Mike Simone, fullback Hillary Shockley, and receiver Eric Cross all will join workout. Following lengthy drill in the Stanford Stadium behind closed gates, coach John Ralston said that Siemon and Cross apparently will play against the Trojans while Shockley and Simone may not be ready for the big game Saturday night at Los Angeles. Cal Bears BERKELEY (UPI) -Coach Ray Willsey is optimistic as the California Bears warm up for game at Washington State.

He called workout part of the best week of practice the Bears have had all season. He said the team has especially been stressing offensive line blocking. linebacker Bill Johnson will miss the game with an ankle sprain, but everyone else is healthy. Oregon EUGENE, Ore. (UPI)-Quarterback Dan Fouts has a brace on his left knee, but it is holding up well as the Cfregon Ducks drill for big battle with the Washington Huskies.

Safety-punter Greg Brosterhous has an injured hip, but he still is expected to see limited action against the Huskies. But linebacker Tom sprained ankle may keep him out of the Husky tiff. Oregon State CORVALLIS (UPI) -Oregon passing game was stressed during Wednesday full- speed drill. The Beavers ended practice with a goal line scrimmage, and also worked on defensing the rushing plays of Arizona State, this foe. ASU is ranked third nationally in total offense and fourth in rushing.

Coach Dee Andros said Scott Woods, a regular on the defensive line, would be excused from the game because of the death this week of his newly born child. He also said cracked ribs would sideline Rod Petersen, sophomore tackle, for a couple weeks. Washington State SPOKANE (UPI) -Starting split end Bobby Redmond will be out of the Washington State University lineup for at least a month because of two cracked vertebrae suffered in the loss to UCLA last weekend. Head coach Jim Sweeney said preliminary reports indicated Redmond suffered from a slight hip pointer, but y-rays revealed the more serious condition. Meanwhile, during workout, Sweeney had his first string offense working against the first string defense in preparation for clash with California at Spokane.

The Cougar defense also worked on blocking the pass routes anticipated by much respected wide receiver, Steve Sweeney. Washington SEATTLE Washington Huskies worked to beef up their pass protection for Sonny Sixkiller and their goal- line ground game Wednesday in a practice session for meeting with Oregon. Sixkiller was dumped several times last Saturday by the Stanford defense and he completed only 12 of 47 passes. Head coach Jim Owens said there may be two or three changes in the starting offensive lineup for the contest with the Ducks. USC Trojans LOS ANGELES (UPI) University of Southern California concentrated on its passing game Wednesday with Jimmy Jones and Mike Rae, the two quarterbacks, doing the throwing.

Coach John McKay had his offensive line concentrate on pass blocking. Florida State Receiver Is Making Big Impression NEW YORK (UPI) When the pre-season all-America picks came out early this fall, nearly everyone had Terry Beasley and Notre Tom Gatewood penciled in as the choices at offensive end. Beasley is living up to preseason expectations with 27 receptions and a per-game average of 6.8, but Gatewood is nowhere to be found among the receiving leaders because of Notre void at quarterback. Dawson, the primary target of quarterback Gary Huff in the unbeaten explosive offense, has 31 receptions, 378 yards and three touchdowns for a 6.2 catches per game average. Another hotshot receiver getting notice from the selectors is Jim Butler. Butler has 25 catches and 233 yards of a 6 3 average per game.

John Carroll is the leader in kick-scoring with an 8.5 points per game average, followed by George Hunt (8.3) and Florida Frank Fontes 8 0 NOW 14 3:00 0.4 9:54 338 2.0 8:20 4.9 15 336 0.610:16 5.3 4 12 1.5 1024 4.8 164:12 1.0 10.48 5.5 4 54 1.1 11 12 4.8 17 4:42 1.3 11:18 5.5 5 24 0.7 12 00 4.7 18 512 1.7 11:36 5 5 5 00 0 3 Hi Water Lo Water Ht Water Lo Water 19 1242 4.6 536 2.1 12 00 5.5 6 30 O.I 20 1 24 46 6:06 2 4 1224 5.5 7 06 0.1 21 2.12 4.4 6:36 27 1242 5.5 7 42 22 300 4.2 7 06 3.0 1.08 5.5 8 24 21 3 4.1 7 42 3 2 142 5.4 9 12 0.1 244 64 4.1 8:24 34 2 18 5.3 10 12 0.0 25 6:06 4.1 9:30 3.6 3 18 5.1 11 12 0.0 26 7 00 4.3 11:00 3.6 4 24 4 9 Lo Alter Ht Altor Lo Water Hi Weter 2712 06 0.0 7 48 6 12 24 3 2 5 54 4.7 28 100 0.1 824 4.9 1 42 2 8 7 24 4.7 29 1 54 0.2 900 5.3 2 42 0.9 8 42 4.7 30 2 42 0.5 9 30 5.7 3 38 0 9 9 48 4.8 31 2 30 0 9 9 00 6 1 3 24 0 0 54 4.9 AT LEAST DISCOUNT NEW OLDSMOBILE TORONADOS NINETY-EIGHTS CUSTOM CRUISERS LEASE OR BUY ALL MODELS QUALITY SERVICE TOO I OLDS 740 FRANCISCO BL, S.R. All the changes were made on defense with sophomore left end Cal Peterson moving ahead of Max Knupper.

Sophomore Jim Bright will replace the injured Ron Carver at safety while Alan Lemmerman, a junior, is set to fill in for injured cornerback Allan Ellis. The Gardens announced postponement of the home opener against the Detroit Red Wings. Ceremonies originally were to have taken place before the game to mark the opening of the Gardens 40 years ago but were rescheduled for Saturday night when the Leafs host the New York Rangers.

Smythe died of an attack of stomach ulcers. He entered Wellesley Hospital last Thursday with bleeding ulcers. Smythe was the son of Conn Smythe, founder of the Leafs, builder of the gardens and one of best-known sports promoters. He bought control of the Leafs and the Gardens from his father in 1961 in partnership with Harold Ballard and publisher John Bassett. Their team won three consecutive Stanley Cups and getting a good ticket to a Leaf game became nearly impossible without a pass.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (UPI)North Carolina coach Bill Dooley lashed out at former athlete Bill Richardson Wednesday, accusing Richardson of using the death of a UNC athlete to his own The attack came after Dooley and several dozen varsity players dressed in practice equipment walked into a room where Richardson, a former all Atlantic Coast Conference linebacker, planned to hold a news conference. Richardson heads a group of former athletes which is pressing for an investigation into the death of Bill Arnold, who died 15 days after suffering a heat stroke during varsity football practice. A faculty athletic committee probe cleared Dooley and his staff of any negligence or fault in death and Dooley has said he considers the case closed. But Richardson contends the investigation was not complete enough.

Dooley told Richardson his opinions were not those of the present varsity team and accused Richardson of using the Arnold case to his own Richardson said he was concerned about the football program and not trying to speak for the players. trying to do is find the said Richardson. not after Dooley retorted, probably get it NEED A TRUCK OR WAGON?
